Taxonomy & naming
Bunocephalus aloikae was described by the Dutch-American ichthyologist Johannes Hoedeman in 1961. It belongs to the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes, and to the genus Bunocephalus, a group of small, flattened, scaleless catfishes found across northern and central South America. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Bunocephalus aloikae as a valid species, and no genus reassignment applies here — it has always sat within Bunocephalus, unlike some Siluriformes that have bounced between historical genera.
The species epithet aloikae references Aloiké, a village on the Litany River in French Guiana near the type locality, following the common Aspredinidae convention of naming species for their collection site. Bunocephalus itself comes from the Greek bounos (mound, hill) and kephale (head), describing the raised, bumpy head profile typical of the genus.
Morphology
Like all banjo catfish, Bunocephalus aloikae has a broad, flattened head and forebody that tapers sharply into a slender, almost rat-like tail, giving the whole animal its namesake banjo silhouette. The skin is entirely scaleless and covered instead in small keratinised tubercles, an adaptation shared across Aspredinidae rather than a defence structure of its own. Reported maximum size is a modest 2.5 in standard length, a genuinely small catfish even by banjo-cat standards — there is no size trap here, but the fish's real adult size should still be stated plainly rather than assumed.
Colouration is cryptic: mottled browns and tans that match sand and leaf litter, helping the fish disappear against river-bottom substrate when partially buried. Unlike many catfish families, Aspredinidae generally lack the stiff, locking dorsal and pectoral spines that make larger catfish hazardous to net, though the fin rays can still be sharp enough to catch in netting — as with any scaleless fish, handling with a container rather than a net is the safer habit.
Habitat
Bunocephalus aloikae is known from the Litany River drainage in French Guiana, part of the network of rivers draining the Guiana Shield to the Atlantic. It is a benthic, demersal species that spends its time on or in the substrate of slow-flowing stretches, favouring fine sand or silt into which it can burrow, leaving only its eyes exposed.
Specific water chemistry data for this species is sparse in the available literature, but Guiana Shield rivers typically run soft and acidic, warm year-round, with limited seasonal temperature swing. Until more precise figures are documented, aquarists should aim for warm, gently flowing water over a fine, soft substrate rather than gravel, which the fish cannot burrow into comfortably.
Feeding
As with other Bunocephalus, this is a nocturnal benthic omnivore that forages over and within the substrate after dark, taking small invertebrates and detritus rather than hunting actively in open water. It is not a fast or aggressive feeder and can be readily outcompeted by more active tankmates if fed only during the day.
In the aquarium it accepts sinking pellets, frozen foods, and other prepared foods that reach the substrate, but feeding should be timed for after lights-out so the fish — largely inactive and buried during the day — gets a fair chance at the food before faster diurnal fish clear it.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behaviour for Bunocephalus aloikae specifically has not been documented in the available literature. Within Aspredinidae more broadly, some species are known for an unusual reproductive strategy in which the female carries fertilised eggs attached to the skin of her belly via fleshy stalks called cotylephores, retaining them externally until they hatch rather than depositing them in a nest. Whether B. aloikae follows this pattern has not been confirmed; it should not be assumed without direct evidence.
Breeding
Breeding of Bunocephalus aloikae is essentially unrecorded in the hobby and poorly documented even in the scientific literature. Within the genus, spawning is rarely achieved in captivity; where eggs are laid on the substrate they are commonly eaten by the adults themselves unless promptly removed, and no reliable home-breeding protocol exists for this species. Reports of belly-carried eggs in other Aspredinidae are worth noting as context for the family, but should not be presented as confirmed for B. aloikae. The honest summary is that this remains an unbred aquarium species with no established parental-care pattern on record.
In the aquarium
This is a small, undemanding catfish by size — topping out around 2.5 in SL — but its needs are specific rather than generic. A fine, soft sand or silt substrate is essential; the fish spends most of its life partially buried and cannot express normal behaviour over gravel. Provide dim lighting and some cover (leaf litter, driftwood) since it is shy and largely nocturnal, becoming most active after dark.
As a fully scaleless catfish, Bunocephalus aloikae is medication-sensitive in the same way as loaches, puffers and eels: dose copper-based treatments and many standard medications conservatively, often at half strength, and monitor closely. It lacks the stiff locking spines of many larger catfish, but as with any scaleless species a soft catch-container is gentler than a net. Keep it with peaceful, non-boisterous tankmates that will not out-compete it for food at night, and avoid coarse gravel substrates entirely.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Bunocephalus aloikae as Least Concern, based on an assessment dated August 2020. Specific threat documentation is sparse in the available record; the species is known from a limited area of French Guiana's Litany River drainage but is not currently flagged as under particular pressure.
As with many small, obscure, single-region catfish, the lack of documented threats likely reflects limited study as much as genuine security — there is little targeted monitoring of this species outside its original description and subsequent range notes. It is not known to be significant in the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is presumed minimal.
