Bunocephalus coracoideus is a small, superbly camouflaged catfish of South American river systems, one of the most convincingly leaf- and twig-like fishes in the aquarium hobby. Belonging to the family Aspredinidae — the banjo catfishes, so named for the broad, flattened head and slender tapering tail that together suggest the silhouette of a banjo — it spends its days motionless on the substrate, indistinguishable from dead wood or leaf litter, and comes to life only after dark to forage for invertebrates and organic debris. Its scaleless skin demands careful medication management, and its breeding biology, in which the female may carry fertilised eggs adhered to her belly skin, is unlike almost anything else in the aquarium. At around 5 in it is not a large catfish, but it is one of the most characterful.

Taxonomy & naming

Bunocephalus coracoideus was described by the American ichthyologist Edward Drinker Cope in 1874. It belongs to the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes, a South American group of bottom-dwellers whose common name reflects the distinctive body plan: an extremely broad, depressed head and a compressed, tapering tail. Within Aspredinidae, the genus Bunocephalus holds a number of species distinguished by head morphology, scale-like tubercle arrangement and distribution.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Bunocephalus coracoideus as the valid combination. The species has not been transferred to another genus since its original description; older names under Dysichthys apply to other Aspredinidae and do not affect this species. Aspredinidae belongs to the suborder Siluroidei within the order Siluriformes, which has seen extensive reclassification over recent decades.

The genus name Bunocephalus combines the Greek bunos (mound, hill) and kephale (head), referring to the lumpy, tuberculate surface of the head. The specific epithet coracoideus is Latin in form and refers to the coracoid bone of the shoulder girdle, alluding to the body shape or the prominence of that region; it reads roughly as 'coracoid-like' or 'pointed like a crow's beak' (from Greek korax, crow), a reference to the angular profile of the fish.

Morphology

The body form is immediately distinctive: the head is broad, strongly depressed and roughly triangular in dorsal view, covered in tubercles and small ridges that break up the outline and contribute to the cryptic appearance. Behind the head the body tapers sharply and continuously to a thin, whip-like tail, giving the fish its banjo shape. The mouth is underslung, wide and fleshy. Three pairs of barbels are present — one maxillary pair and two mandibular pairs — all relatively short compared with some other catfish families.

The skin is entirely naked (scaleless), lacking both scales and the bony plates seen in loricariids and doradids. The surface is rough with tubercles and mucus-producing cells. Adult size in the hobby is typically reported at 4.5–5 in standard length; the cache literature places the maximum at around 5 in SL. The pectoral fins are broad and wing-like; unlike the doradids or mochokids, Bunocephalus does not carry the stiff, locking, serrated spines typical of those families, so netting is not the same hazard as with many other catfishes — though the rough tuberculate body surface still warrants gentle handling.

Coloration is cryptic: typically a mottled mixture of grey, brown and tan with irregular darker blotches, matching sand, mud and leaf litter almost exactly. In many specimens a pale underside contrasts with the darker dorsal surface, which may be the origin of the 'two-colored' trade name.

Habitat

Bunocephalus coracoideus is a South American species recorded from the Amazon basin and associated coastal river systems. It inhabits the benthos of slow-moving or still waters — flooded forest margins, leaf-litter banks, shallow backwaters and the muddy or sandy edges of larger rivers — where its camouflage renders it virtually invisible against the substrate.

The natural waters of its range are warm, soft and mildly acidic: temperature around 75–82 °F, pH roughly 5.8–7.0, and hardness low (approximately 3–10 dH). These are classic soft-blackwater Neotropical conditions, associated with leaf tannins and low mineral content, though the species likely tolerates some variation across the broad range of drainages it occupies. Dense leaf accumulations, submerged wood and fine silty sediment are the microhabitat of choice.

Feeding

Bunocephalus coracoideus is a nocturnal benthic omnivore and micro-predator. In the wild it forages the bottom after dark for aquatic invertebrates — midge larvae, small worms, micro-crustaceans — along with organic detritus, small organic particles and whatever edible material sifts through the leaf litter it inhabits. During daylight hours it remains almost entirely motionless, relying on crypsis rather than activity.

In the aquarium it will accept most sinking foods: sinking catfish pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, tubifex, brine shrimp and similar micro-frozen foods. Feeding should be scheduled after lights-out; in a community aquarium the banjo cat will be out-competed by more active daytime feeders and may decline slowly if food is not available when it begins to move. A small quantity of food placed directly near its resting spot in the evening is an effective strategy.

Mating

The mating biology of Bunocephalus coracoideus is poorly documented in the scientific literature and only fragmentarily reported in the hobby. What is known from related aspredinids suggests an unusual reproductive strategy: fertilisation is followed by the female carrying the eggs attached to modified fleshy stalks (cotylephores) on the ventral skin of her abdomen. This belly-brooding method is one of the more unusual egg-transport strategies seen in catfishes.

In the aquarium, mating has rarely been observed in detail. The sexes are reported to differ in body depth — gravid females become noticeably broader across the belly, particularly when carrying eggs — but outside of breeding condition the species is difficult to sex reliably. Conditioning on varied live and frozen foods is thought to encourage spawning readiness, but confirmed accounts of home breeding are sparse.

Breeding

Breeding in captivity is rarely achieved and not well documented for Bunocephalus coracoideus specifically. The Aspredinidae mechanism — where the female may carry fertilised eggs adhered to her ventral skin via cotylephores (fleshy adhesive stalks) until the eggs hatch — is noted in the family literature but seldom reported in home aquaria for this species.

When spawning has been reported, the female apparently carries the attached egg mass on her belly for a period before free-swimming fry emerge. No parental guarding of fry has been reported. The practical difficulty lies in the species' extreme secretiveness and nocturnality: most keepers are unaware a spawn has occurred until fry are spotted. Offering flat surfaces at substrate level, leaf litter, and very soft, slightly acidic water are the conditions most likely to encourage natural behaviour. This is not a catfish that can be bred on demand; patience and careful observation are required.

In the aquarium

A tank for Bunocephalus coracoideus need not be large — an aquarium of 23.5–31.5 in or longer is suitable for one or a small group — but the setup matters considerably more than size. A soft, fine-grained substrate (sand or very fine gravel) is essential: the fish spends most of its time lying flat on the bottom, and sharp gravel damages the naked skin and discourages the burial behaviour this species commonly shows. Deep leaf litter, pieces of driftwood and low light or shaded areas are strongly appreciated; the fish will bury itself under leaves or lodge against wood and may not be seen for days at a time.

The most important husbandry point is the scaleless skin: Bunocephalus coracoideus lacks both scales and bony armour, making it more permeable to dissolved medications than a scaled or plated fish. Copper-based treatments and many common fish medications should be used at half the label dose or avoided entirely; salt tolerance is lower than for many species; and any change in water chemistry is felt more directly. This med-sensitivity is shared with loaches, puffers and eels and is the primary reason banjo cats sometimes crash during a tank-wide disease treatment. Treat any disease in a separate hospital tank where possible and dose conservatively.

Unlike doradids and mochokids, Bunocephalus does not carry the stiff, locking spine structures that tangle fatally in nets, so netting is not the hazard it is with those families — but the rough tuberculate surface still warrants gentle handling. Tankmates should be peaceful and not overly competitive at feeding time; the banjo cat is entirely non-aggressive. Keep the water soft and warm (75–82 °F, pH 5.8–7.0) and avoid the hard, alkaline conditions suited to rift-lake cichlids. Tannins from Indian almond leaves or driftwood are beneficial and will deepen the natural brown tones of the water.

Conservation

Bunocephalus coracoideus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; the species is Not Evaluated (NE). This is common for Aspredinidae: most banjo catfishes are small, cryptic, and poorly surveyed, and formal conservation assessments have not been conducted for the majority of the family.

The species has a broad distribution across the Amazon basin and South American coastal drainages, which suggests it is not acutely threatened at the range level. However, like most Neotropical catfishes it is vulnerable to the widespread pressures affecting South American freshwater habitats: deforestation, sedimentation, river channelisation and collection for the ornamental fish trade. Most specimens in the hobby are wild-collected, as home breeding is infrequent; sustained collection pressure combined with habitat loss could affect local populations. Continued assessment of Aspredinidae diversity and population status is needed.
