Bunocephalus amaurus is a small, flat-bodied banjo catfish from the coastal rivers of northern South America, named for its dark, mottled camouflage rather than any real ferocity. Like the rest of the family Aspredinidae it is built to disappear into leaf litter and sand — a wide, depressed head tapering to a slender tail gives it a silhouette closer to a tadpole or a banjo than a typical catfish. It stays modest in size, is scaleless and therefore medication-sensitive, and remains a fish about which surprisingly little breeding biology is documented.

Taxonomy & naming

Bunocephalus amaurus was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912, with the type locality at Konawaruk in British Guiana, now Guyana. It belongs to the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes, and to the genus Bunocephalus, one of several genera in that family recognisable by their flattened, guitar-shaped bodies. GBIF and current taxonomic sources confirm Bunocephalus amaurus as the valid combination.

Older catfish literature sometimes shuffled species between genera, and a check against historical synonymy for this species turns up the name Dysichthys as a genus once applied to some banjo catfishes; no separate valid record for a "Dysichthys amaurus" persists today, and the fish is properly placed in Bunocephalus. The genus name comes from the Greek bounos (mound or hill) and kephale (head), a reference to the raised, bony head shield typical of the group; the species epithet amaurus is Greek for "dark" or "dim", fitting this catfish's dusky, camouflaged colouring.

Morphology

Bunocephalus amaurus reaches about 4.5 in in standard length, with some references reporting individuals up to 6 in SL — a real adult size that should guide tank planning rather than the tiny impression its flattened shape can give at a glance. The body is strongly depressed, widest across the head and shoulders and tapering to a long, slender caudal peduncle, giving the whole animal the flattened, elongate outline that earns the family its "banjo" name. A shallow, Y-shaped bony crest runs across the top of the head, a hallmark of the genus.

Colouration is a mottled blend of browns and greys that breaks up the fish's outline against sand and leaf litter — effective camouflage rather than showy pattern. Like virtually all catfishes, B. amaurus is scaleless, its skin instead a naked, sometimes granular covering; this matters directly for aquarium medication (see "In the aquarium"). It carries pectoral spines that can be locked in place, though no venom has been reported for this species.

Habitat

This species is native to the coastal river systems of northern South America, ranging from the Orinoco basin through the Guianas and down toward the mouths of the Amazon. The type locality, Konawaruk, sits in interior Guyana, and the species is generally associated with slow-flowing, sediment-rich lowland rivers and their margins.

Reported water conditions span a fairly wide, tropical-typical range: temperatures around 77–82 °F and pH from about 6.0 to 8.0. This is broader and less strictly acidic than the classic soft blackwater profile often assumed for South American catfishes, and keepers should follow these real figures rather than defaulting to blackwater extremes. Like other banjo catfishes it is a bottom-dweller, spending its days buried or half-buried in sand and leaf litter, from which its flattened shape and drab colour make it very hard to spot.

Feeding

Bunocephalus amaurus is a nocturnal benthic omnivore with a broad food spectrum, foraging over and through the substrate mainly after dark for invertebrates, detritus and other bottom material — FishBase describes it plainly as a bottom cleaner. In the aquarium it takes worm-based foods readily, particularly frozen bloodworm and tubifex, along with sinking tablet and pellet foods.

Because it is most active at night, it does best when food is offered after the lights go out, so it is not out-competed by more visible, day-active tankmates. It is not a fussy specialist, and a varied diet of sinking meaty and prepared foods suits it well.

Mating

Documented mating behaviour for Bunocephalus amaurus itself is sparse — this is not a species with an established aquarium spawning record. What can be said comes largely by analogy with its close relative Bunocephalus coracoideus, which is known to spawn over sand, producing large clutches on the order of 4,000 eggs.

Beyond that comparison, specific courtship or pairing behaviour for B. amaurus has not been reported in the sources available here, and it would be speculative to describe a spawning ritual for this particular species without better documentation.

Breeding

Breeding of Bunocephalus amaurus is essentially undocumented, and it should not be assumed to follow any of the more familiar catfish patterns such as bubble-nesting or internal fertilisation — those belong to other catfish families entirely. In some banjo catfishes (Aspredinidae), females are known to carry fertilised eggs attached to the skin of the belly via fleshy stalks until they hatch, a genuinely unusual form of external egg-carrying parental care found in parts of this family; whether B. amaurus itself uses this strategy is not confirmed in the sources consulted here, so it is reported as a family trait rather than a confirmed fact for this species.

The close relative B. coracoideus is bred by depositing large numbers of eggs in sand with no reported parental care of the clutch. Given the lack of species-specific breeding data, this is best treated honestly as a fish whose reproductive biology in captivity remains essentially unknown, rather than a reliably home-breedable aquarium species.

In the aquarium

A tank for Bunocephalus amaurus should be sized for its real adult length of up to 4.5–6 in, not its unassuming, flattened juvenile profile — the size trap of assuming a low-slung catfish will stay small applies here as with many bottom-dwellers. A soft sand substrate is important, since this species spends much of its time partly buried; leaf litter and scattered cover give it further places to hide during the day, as it is primarily nocturnal.

Being scaleless, B. amaurus is medication-sensitive in the same way as loaches, puffers and true eels: copper-based treatments and many standard medications should be dosed conservatively, often at half strength, and the fish should be monitored closely during any treatment. It does carry pectoral spines that can lock and snag in a net, so it is safer to move in a container than to chase with a net. Water parameters should follow the species' real native range — roughly 77–82 °F and pH 6.0–8.0 — rather than an assumed soft-acidic blackwater setup.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Bunocephalus amaurus as Least Concern in 2020. It occupies a wide range of coastal river systems across northern South America, from the Orinoco basin through the Guianas toward the Amazon mouths, and is not currently considered at risk at the species level.

As with many widely distributed, poorly studied lowland river fishes, the main long-term considerations are habitat pressures common to the region — deforestation, sedimentation and water-quality changes in the rivers it inhabits — rather than any documented species-specific threat.
