Taxonomy & naming
Bunocephalus chamaizelus was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912. It belongs to the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes, within the genus Bunocephalus. FishBase notes the species has historically also been placed in the now-synonymised genus Dysichthys, a combination sometimes still seen in older hobby and taxonomic literature; the current valid placement keeps it in Bunocephalus.
The genus name Bunocephalus comes from the Greek bounos ("hill" or "mound") and kephale ("head"), a reference to the raised, knobby profile of the head shared across the genus. The species epithet chamaizelus is not explained in the sources consulted here; data is sparse on its etymology beyond the genus-level meaning.
Morphology
Like other banjo catfishes, Bunocephalus chamaizelus has a broad, flattened head and forebody tapering to a slender, almost eel-like tail, giving the whole animal its instrument-like silhouette. The skin is naked and scaleless, covered instead in small tubercles and a mottled brown-and-cream pattern that mimics dead leaves and sediment.
This is a genuinely small species: FishBase records a maximum standard length of only about 1.5 in, making it one of the more diminutive members of the family. As in other catfishes it carries stiff pectoral spines that can lock in place; while not large enough to be a major hazard, a scaleless, spined fish this size should still be handled and netted with care.
Habitat
Bunocephalus chamaizelus is known from the Essequibo River basin in Guyana, South America. It is a freshwater, demersal species — it lives on or in the substrate rather than in open water.
Detailed water-chemistry data for this species is sparse in the available sources. Banjo catfishes as a group are typically found over soft sand or silty bottoms in slow-flowing forest streams and river margins, where they lie buried with only the eyes exposed, and B. chamaizelus is presumed to follow this pattern, though specific pH and hardness figures for this species are not confirmed here.
Feeding
Bunocephalus chamaizelus is a nocturnal, benthic omnivore, foraging over and within the substrate mostly after dark for small invertebrates and detritus, in keeping with the feeding habits documented for the genus.
In the aquarium, banjo catfish of this genus take sinking pellets along with frozen and prepared foods once they locate them by scent and touch rather than sight. Because they are inactive, secretive, and feed at night, food is best offered after lights-out so this species is not out-competed by more active tankmates.
Mating
Specific courtship behaviour has not been documented for Bunocephalus chamaizelus. Within the family Aspredinidae, several species — most notably in the genus Platystacus — are known for an unusual reproductive strategy: during the spawning season the female develops fleshy stalks called cotylephores on her belly skin, and after fertilisation the eggs attach to these stalks, which the mother then carries until the eggs hatch.
Whether B. chamaizelus itself uses egg-carrying or a different strategy is not confirmed in the sources available; data is sparse and this account does not extend the cotylephore behaviour to this species without direct evidence.
Breeding
Breeding of Bunocephalus chamaizelus is little known, and it is not an aquarium-bred species. Wild spawning in aspredinid banjo catfishes more broadly is believed in some species to occur in brackish or estuarine water, and successful captive breeding across the family is rare.
Given the lack of specific data for this species, keepers should not expect to breed it in a home aquarium; anyone attempting it would be working essentially without a precedent to follow.
In the aquarium
Bunocephalus chamaizelus stays genuinely small — to about 1.5 in SL — so it does not present the size trap that catches out keepers of larger catfish; even so, a fine sand or soft substrate for burrowing and dim, calm conditions matter more than tank volume. Seriously Fish recommends a tank of at least 60 x 37.5 x 12 in as adequate for this largely inactive genus, furnished with leaf litter and driftwood for cover and a gentle, non-turbulent flow.
As a scaleless catfish it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and should be dosed conservatively if treatment is needed. It also carries locking pectoral spines typical of catfish, so it is best scooped in a container rather than a net to avoid tangling. Being nocturnal and cryptic, it is easily overlooked or outcompeted for food in a lively community and does best with calm, similarly gentle tankmates.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Bunocephalus chamaizelus as Near Threatened. Its known range is confined to the Essequibo River basin, a single-basin distribution that leaves it more exposed to localised pressures than a widespread species.
As with many small, poorly studied South American catfishes, specific threat data is limited, but habitat degradation within the Essequibo basin — from mining, deforestation and water-quality changes — is the general pressure category relevant to a range-restricted species of this kind.
