Taxonomy & naming
Clarias buettikoferi was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1894. It belongs to the family Clariidae, the airbreathing or "walking" catfishes, and to the genus Clarias, a large Old World genus of more than 60 species spread across Africa and Asia. The Catalog of Fishes treats Clarias buettikoferi as the currently valid name, and it has not been shuffled into a different genus the way many older Siluriformes combinations have been.
The genus name Clarias derives from the Greek chlaros, referring to the liveliness or vigour of these fish, which are famous for surviving out of water and moving overland between pools. The species epithet buettikoferi honours Johann Büttikofer, the Swiss-Dutch naturalist and collector who worked extensively in Liberia and Sierra Leone in the late nineteenth century, the region from which the type material originated.
Morphology
Like all Clarias, this species has the classic walking-catfish body plan: an elongated, cylindrical trunk, a broad flattened head, four pairs of long barbels around the mouth, and a long-based dorsal fin running nearly the length of the back, paired with a similarly long anal fin. The skin is completely scaleless and covered in mucus, giving the fish a smooth, naked feel.
FishBase records a maximum length of 7.5 in total length for Clarias buettikoferi, making it one of the smaller members of its genus, though still a substantial fish by aquarium standards. As in other Clarias, the pectoral fins carry a stout, serrated spine that can lock into place — a genuine hazard when handling the fish, and a reason to move it in a container rather than a net. The species also possesses the suprabranchial air-breathing organ typical of the family, an accessory structure above the gills that lets it gulp atmospheric air directly.
Habitat
Clarias buettikoferi is a West African endemic, recorded from the Gambia River and the coastal river basins of Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia through to the River St. John, and further east in the Sassandra, Bandama, Agnébi, Mé and Bia drainages of Côte d'Ivoire, reaching into Ghana. It is a freshwater, demersal species living on or near the bottom of small rivers and their associated pools and floodplain habitats.
FishBase gives a temperature range of roughly 68–81 °F for the species, consistent with the warm lowland rivers of the Upper Guinea forest region. As an air-breather it can tolerate the low-oxygen, seasonally stagnant pools typical of these West African river systems, one of the key adaptations that lets Clarias survive conditions that would suffocate most other fish.
Feeding
Clarias catfishes are greedy, opportunistic feeders, and C. buettikoferi is no exception — FishBase describes it taking a wide variety of commercial foods readily. In the wild this translates to an omnivorous, largely predatory diet of aquatic invertebrates, smaller fish, and whatever animal matter it can find and swallow on the riverbed at night.
In the aquarium it accepts pellets, meaty frozen foods, prawn and fish flesh without hesitation, and will not turn down live or feeder fish small enough to swallow whole. Because it is a large-mouthed nocturnal predator, any tankmates must be too large for it to eat — this is not a fish that can be trusted with anything that fits in its mouth.
Mating
Specific courtship behaviour for Clarias buettikoferi has not been documented in the sources available, but breeding biology across the genus Clarias is well characterised and this species is expected to follow the same pattern. Wild Clarias typically spawn during the rainy season, when rising water floods marginal vegetation and floodplain pools, triggering migration and mass spawning events among river populations.
In commercial aquaculture — the context in which Clarias species are actually propagated — natural courtship is bypassed almost entirely. Breeders use hormone-induced spawning (GnRH agonists or human chorionic gonadotropin analogues, sometimes via pituitary extract) to bring captive broodstock into spawning condition on demand, followed by manual stripping and artificial fertilisation rather than allowing the fish to pair and spawn on their own.
Breeding
This is a large, commercially farmed catfish genus, and Clarias buettikoferi is essentially not bred in the home aquarium. Across Clarias generally, reliable reproduction at scale depends on hormone-induced spawning and stripping techniques developed for aquaculture, not on natural pairing in a tank — the fish grow too large, and inducing gonadal maturation and ovulation on a hobbyist's schedule is beyond what a home setup can offer.
There is no parental care to speak of once eggs are stripped and fertilised artificially; wild spawning is a mass, unguarded event tied to seasonal floods rather than a pair-bonded nest. Anyone drawn to this species should treat it as a display and biotope fish rather than a breeding project.
In the aquarium
Clarias buettikoferi reaches about 7.5 in total length as an adult — smaller than the giants of the genus, but still a big-bodied, active fish that needs a long tank with a secure, tight-fitting lid; air-breathing catfishes are notorious escape artists and will use their strength to push through any gap. FishBase notes the species requires a gap of at least 0.5 in between the water surface and the glass cover so it can reach atmospheric air, since its accessory breathing organ makes it an obligate air-gulper, not an optional one.
The skin is entirely scaleless, so this fish is more sensitive than scaled species to copper-based medications and many standard treatments — dose conservatively, often at half the labelled rate, as is standard practice for naked-skinned catfishes. Handle it only in a container, never a net: the locking pectoral spines snag mesh and can jab the handler. It is nocturnal, appreciates dense cover or a cave to retreat to by day, and should only be housed with tankmates too large to be eaten, since it is a capable predator after dark. As with all Clarias, never release excess stock into local waterways — the genus is a well-documented invasive outside its native range.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Clarias buettikoferi as Least Concern in 2020. It has a fairly wide distribution across multiple West African coastal river systems from the Gambia to Ghana, and there is no indication of significant population decline across that range.
As with many West African river fishes, localized pressures such as habitat degradation, deforestation in the Upper Guinea forest catchments, and freshwater pollution are the relevant long-term concerns even where the species as a whole remains unthreatened. The species does not appear to be a major target of the aquarium trade, and most Clarias reaching hobbyists come from broader regional collection rather than targeted commercial breeding of this particular species.
