Taxonomy & naming
Laubuka siamensis was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1939. The genus Laubuka, erected by Gray in 1834, accommodates a group of surface-oriented, laterally compressed danionin cyprinids distributed from India through mainland Southeast Asia. Although superficially similar to the small Chela and some Rasbora species, Laubuka is distinguished by its highly compressed body, upturned mouth and characteristic open-water, surface-skimming habits.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) records the valid combination as Laubuka siamensis Fowler, 1939. The species epithet siamensis refers to Siam, the former name of Thailand, reflecting the type locality. The genus has at times been placed in synonymy with Chela Hamilton, 1822, or treated as a subgenus of it; we follow the current Catalog of Fishes in maintaining Laubuka as a distinct genus. No subspecies are recognised.
Morphology
Laubuka siamensis is a small but relatively elongate fish, reported to reach 2–2.5 in in standard length. The body is strongly laterally compressed and somewhat deep-keeled anteriorly, tapering to a slender caudal peduncle. The mouth is distinctly upturned, adapted for surface feeding, and the eye is proportionally large. The overall body form is that of a fast-moving open-water shoaler built for surface skimming.
The coloration, typical of the genus, is silvery with a lateral stripe or iridescent band running along the flank; the precise patterning details have not been extensively documented in the published literature. The fins are largely transparent to pale. Sexual dimorphism has not been formally characterised in the literature, though females of comparable danionin species are typically deeper-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
Laubuka siamensis occupies a broad range of lowland freshwater habitats across mainland Southeast Asia, including small tributary streams, freshwater pools, irrigation canals and rice paddies. During the wet season it moves into seasonally inundated forest margins and flooded fields. It is consistently described as a surface-swimming species, found in loose groups near the water's surface in areas of moderate to gentle current.
Water parameters recorded from the Seriously Fish profile span 68–82 °F and pH 6.0–7.5, with hardness from 18 to 179 ppm — reflecting a broad tolerance from soft, slightly acidic lowland streams to moderately hard, near-neutral irrigation and paddy water. The wide hardness tolerance is consistent with a species that ranges across the varied catchments of the Mekong, Chao Phraya, Mae Klong and smaller southern Thai and Peninsular Malaysian drainages.
Feeding
Laubuka siamensis is a surface feeder. The upturned mouth and tendency to shoal near the water's surface point to a diet centred on invertebrates taken at or just below the surface film — insects, small crustaceans and similar items that fall onto or hatch at the surface. This feeding strategy is shared broadly across Laubuka and allied danionin genera.
In the aquarium the species accepts live and frozen foods including daphnia, artemia and bloodworm. Like most small surface-active danionins, it is likely to condition well and display best colour on a diet that includes regular live or frozen invertebrate prey.
Mating
Laubuka siamensis has not been observed or documented spawning in the aquarium, and no detailed field data on its reproductive behaviour has been published. Based on its systematics and general danionin biology, it is almost certainly a scatter-spawner: a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or near the surface, and eggs and milt are released together without the formation of a pair bond or a nest.
Like all danios and danionin relatives, there is no parental care; the adhesive eggs are left wherever they fall after spawning. Spawning in the wild is likely triggered by the onset of the wet season, when flooded margins and rising water temperatures provide the cue for reproductive activity across the region's lowland fishes.
Breeding
Breeding of Laubuka siamensis in the aquarium is unreported in the published and hobbyist literature as of the time of writing. It is classified as an egg-scatterer, consistent with all other members of the danionin lineage. Eggs would be expected to be adhesive or weakly adhesive, scattered over fine-leaved plants, submerged roots or the substrate, with no parental attention after spawning — adults of danionin species readily consume their own eggs and should be separated from the spawn.
Hobbyists wishing to attempt breeding this species would likely draw on the standard approach used for related surface-spawners: a separate, well-planted shallow tank, soft to moderately hard slightly acidic water, and the introduction of well-conditioned adults under conditions mimicking the onset of the wet season. Given the lack of published accounts, the specific requirements for successful spawning are not yet established.
In the aquarium
Laubuka siamensis is an uncommon species in the hobby. When available, it requires clean, well-oxygenated water, a long aquarium that allows the surface-level shoaling behaviour it displays in the wild, and groups of at least 8–10 individuals: kept in small numbers the species is likely to be nervous and fail to display natural behaviour. It is an accomplished jumper and a tight-fitting lid is essential.
Water conditions should fall within 68–82 °F and pH 6.0–7.5, with soft to moderately hard water. Moderate current and good surface agitation will suit a fish from flowing tributary streams and canals. Tankmates should be peaceful and similarly sized; the species's surface-skimming habit means it is best combined with mid- and bottom-level fishes rather than other surface dwellers that may compete for the same zone.
Conservation
Laubuka siamensis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment date of March 2011. The DD listing reflects an absence of adequate population data, abundance estimates or trend information rather than a confirmed absence of threats. The species occupies lowland freshwater habitats — small streams, canals and rice paddies — across one of the most intensively farmed and developed regions of Southeast Asia, and these habitats are broadly under pressure from agricultural expansion, pesticide and fertiliser runoff, water extraction for irrigation and the modification of natural drainage systems.
Whether Laubuka siamensis has declined as a result of these pressures across any part of its range is unknown. Its broad distribution across multiple river systems in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Peninsular Malaysia provides some buffer against localised habitat loss, but the Data Deficient status means the species warrants monitoring as land-use pressures on Southeast Asian lowland freshwater continue to intensify.
