Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora ataenia was described by Plamoottil in 2016 in the International Journal of Innovative Studies in Aquatic Biology and Fisheries (volume 2, issue 5, pages 20–24), based on material collected from Alappuzha, Kerala, India. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) is the reference for the current valid combination; the species has not been synonymised or transferred to another genus since its description.
The genus Rasbora has undergone substantial revision over the past two decades. A series of former Rasbora species have been transferred to resurrected or newly erected genera — among them Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia and Rasboroides — leaving Rasbora as a large but more natural assemblage of medium-bodied South and Southeast Asian schooling cyprinids. R. ataenia fits within that residual core on morphological grounds as currently understood. It should not be confused with the so-called 'galaxy rasbora' or 'celestial pearl danio' (now Danio margaritatus), which was moved to Danio and is not a Rasbora at all.
No common name has been formally applied to R. ataenia in the hobby or scientific literature. It is sometimes referenced informally as the 'Alappuzha rasbora' after its type locality.
Morphology
Rasbora ataenia is a slender-bodied rasbora whose most diagnostic feature is the complete absence of the mid-lateral stripe (taenia) that characterises most members of the genus — the name ataenia directly references this absence. In addition to lacking the lateral band, the species has a head that is proportionally deeper and a snout that is shorter than in closely related congeners, giving it a subtly different profile.
The dorsal fin carries 7 branched rays and the anal fin 5 branched rays. Body depth runs roughly 19.4–21.7% of standard length, placing it firmly in the slender-bodied range typical of Rasbora. The original description notes that the species can be distinguished from sympatric or geographically proximate congeners by the combination of its lateral-stripe absence, the head profile and these fin-ray counts.
Detailed size data for wild-caught adults are sparse; holotype measurements were not fully extracted in available sources. The species is presumed to reach the typical small Rasbora range of 1–2 in total length, consistent with its overall body proportions, but a verified maximum size figure is not available from the current data.
Habitat
The type locality of Rasbora ataenia is Alappuzha (Alleppey), a low-lying coastal district in central Kerala, on the Malabar Coast of southwestern India. This area is part of the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot and its associated coastal lowland drainage, characterised by slow-moving rivers, backwaters, canals and paddy-field channels interwoven with tidal influence at lower elevations. The waters here are typically soft, warm and slightly to moderately acidic, with organic matter from riparian vegetation contributing tannins and low conductivity.
No detailed habitat survey data are available for this species beyond the type locality record. By comparison with other small Rasbora species from the Western Ghats lowlands, the preferred habitat is likely shallow, vegetated freshwater with a soft or silty substrate, slow current and dense marginal or aquatic plant cover. Temperature in the Alappuzha lowlands is consistently warm year-round, with water temperatures staying broadly in the range used for congeners (72–82 °F), and the monsoon brings seasonal flooding that shapes breeding conditions for small cyprinids across the region.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study has been conducted on Rasbora ataenia. By analogy with other small Rasbora species of similar body form and habitat, it is an opportunistic omnivore and micropredator, consuming small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, zooplankton and worms — along with plant material, algae and organic detritus. Its slender build and mid-water schooling habit are consistent with a fish that feeds actively through the water column on whatever small prey is available.
In the aquarium, small rasboras of this type accept a wide range of standard foods — quality flake, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen items such as daphnia, cyclops and newly hatched brine shrimp. Regular variety in the diet supports good condition and colour.
Mating
Rasbora ataenia, as a member of the genus Rasbora, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specific mating observations have been published for this species, but the reproductive mode is consistent across virtually all Rasbora: there is no nest, no pair bond and no parental care of any kind. A gravid female is pursued through vegetation by one or more males, and eggs and milt are released together in brief, darting spawning runs among plants or over the substrate.
The scattered eggs are weakly adhesive and settle among fine-leaved plants, moss or on the substrate surface, where they are immediately at risk of being eaten by the adults themselves. Spawning in the wild is likely triggered or intensified by monsoon conditions — warming water, rising water levels and an influx of food — mirroring the pattern seen across small cyprinids throughout the Western Ghats drainage.
Breeding
No aquarium breeding account has been published for Rasbora ataenia, which is rarely if ever seen in the hobby. Based on the biology of the genus, aquarium breeding would follow the standard egg-scattering method used for small Rasbora: a separate, shallow breeding tank furnished with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, into which a well-conditioned group or a selected pair is introduced. A small rise in temperature and the addition of aged soft water often triggers spawning, which tends to occur in the early morning.
Eggs and adults should be separated promptly after spawning to prevent predation. The eggs of small rasboras typically hatch within two to three days at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming fry appearing a few days later; initial foods are infusoria or commercial fry food, followed by freshly hatched brine shrimp as the fry grow. The species has no parental care of any form — adults take no interest in eggs or fry.
In the aquarium
Rasbora ataenia is essentially unknown in the ornamental fish trade. Its restricted distribution in Alappuzha, Kerala, and its very recent description (2016) mean it has not entered commercial collection routes, and no established husbandry tradition exists. If encountered, it should be kept as a shoaling species in groups of at least six to eight individuals in a planted aquarium with soft, warm, slightly acidic water reflecting its Western Ghats lowland origins.
Water parameters should target approximately 72–81 °F, pH around 6.0–7.0 and low to moderate hardness — similar to other small Indian and Sri Lankan Rasbora. The species is presumed peaceful and compatible with other small, non-aggressive fish of similar size. Dim lighting, tannin staining from driftwood or botanicals, and a dark substrate would reflect its natural environment and likely reduce stress. Any specimens in the trade should be assumed wild-caught and quarantined carefully before introduction.
Conservation
Rasbora ataenia has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. It was described only in 2016 and is currently known from a single locality in Alappuzha, Kerala — a low-lying coastal district under significant pressure from agriculture, aquaculture expansion, urbanisation and water extraction. The Western Ghats are a recognised global biodiversity hotspot, but the freshwater fish fauna of the coastal lowland rivers and backwater systems is poorly surveyed and many small-bodied species remain undescribed or are known from very few collection events.
A species with such a narrow known range and a habitat type subject to ongoing modification must be considered potentially vulnerable, even without a formal IUCN category. Its single-locality status means that any further degradation of the Alappuzha wetlands — drainage, chemical runoff from paddy fields, or habitat conversion — could threaten the entire known population. Systematic surveys of the freshwater fish communities of Kerala's coastal lowlands would help determine whether R. ataenia has a wider range than currently documented, or whether it is genuinely restricted to a small area.
