Rasbora dandia, the broad stripe rasbora, is a slender surface-dwelling cyprinid from the lowland freshwaters of Sri Lanka and southern India — arguably the most abundant freshwater fish in Sri Lanka and a familiar sight in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu as well. Named for the bold, broad horizontal stripe that runs the length of each flank, it is a fast-moving shoaler of rivers, streams, rice paddies and ponds, tolerating an unusually wide range of habitats yet sensitive to organic pollution. In the aquarium it is an active, jumpy surface fish that rewards clean water and good company.

Taxonomy & naming

Rasbora dandia was originally described by Achille Valenciennes in 1844. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS — the governing authority for valid names) records the valid combination as Rasbora dandia (Valenciennes, 1844), with the parenthetical authority indicating the species was moved from its original genus at some point in its taxonomic history.

The genus Rasbora, as currently delimited by the Catalog of Fishes, remains a large and heterogeneous assemblage of small cyprinids distributed across South and Southeast Asia. Several former Rasbora species have been transferred to other genera in recent decades — Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia, Rasboroides and others have been carved out — but R. dandia itself remains within Rasbora. It is placed in the Indian subcontinent clade rather than the Sundaland or mainland Southeast Asian assemblages, and its closest relatives are other broadly striped South Asian rasboras. The Seriously Fish account treats material from Sri Lanka and southern India under the name Rasbora cf. dandia, indicating that the South Indian and Sri Lankan populations may not be conspecific, though we follow the current Catalog of Fishes in treating them as one species here.

Morphology

Rasbora dandia is a slim, elongate, laterally compressed fish reaching close to 4 in standard length in the largest individuals, though most specimens encountered are smaller. The mouth is terminal without the upturned character of some congeners, and the symphysial knob — a small bump at the chin tip common in several Rasbora species — is not prominent. The lateral line carries 27–31 pored scales.

The defining feature is the axial stripe: a broad, dark horizontal band running from behind the operculum to the base of the caudal fin, wider than the height of a single scale row, sharper-edged than in many similar rasboras. The background body colour is silvery to golden, and the belly is pale. Sexual dimorphism is moderate — females are typically deeper-bodied and more rounded in the abdomen when gravid; males are slimmer and may show more intense colouration.

Habitat

Rasbora dandia occupies virtually all categories of lowland freshwater across its range, from clean rivers and streams to rice paddies, ponds and reservoirs, at altitudes up to approximately 2297 ft. It is absent from truly stagnant or organically enriched water and intolerant of poor water quality, but within the range of clean, well-oxygenated habitats it is a generalist.

In Sri Lanka it is considered the most common freshwater fish on the island, found island-wide in flowing and standing waters from the foothills to the coast. On the Indian mainland it occurs across Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Water conditions across this range vary: hill-stream runs tend toward cooler, clearer, softer water while lowland ponds and paddies can be warmer and slightly harder, which accounts for the species' tolerance of a broad temperature and pH band. It is a surface-oriented fish, holding in the upper water column over submerged or marginal vegetation.

Feeding

Rasbora dandia is an invertivore and opportunistic surface feeder in the wild, taking small aquatic and terrestrial insects, crustaceans and other invertebrates that fall onto or near the water surface, supplemented by whatever small organic matter is available in its habitat. Its terminal mouth and surface-dwelling behaviour suit a fish that scans the film and upper column for food.

In the aquarium it accepts a varied diet without difficulty. Live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp are taken eagerly and help maintain colour and breeding condition. Quality flake and small floating pellets are also readily accepted. The species is an active, quick feeder that competes well at the surface; care should be taken that slower or more timid tankmates receive their share.

Mating

Rasbora dandia is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Like all members of the rasbora and danio lineage, it builds no nest, establishes no territory around a spawning site and provides no parental care before or after the eggs are released. Courtship takes the form of a driving male pursuing a gravid female through the water column and among vegetation, pressing alongside her briefly as eggs and milt are shed.

The eggs are adhesive or weakly adhesive and come to rest on fine-leaved plants, submerged roots or the substrate. No pair bond persists beyond the spawning act, and adults will consume eggs given the opportunity. Spawning in the wild is likely triggered by warm, rising water associated with the monsoon season, when fish move into shallower, vegetated margins.

Breeding

Rasbora dandia can be bred in the aquarium using a standard egg-scatterer approach. A separate, clean spawning tank furnished with fine-leaved plants or a moss layer — or marbles on the base to protect eggs from the adults — is set up at 72–77 °F with soft to moderately hard water (pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 2–12°dH). Well-conditioned adults, ideally conditioned on live or frozen foods, are introduced and spawning typically follows in the morning light.

Eggs are scattered broadly and should be protected from the parents by removing the adults after spawning. The eggs hatch within a couple of days at tropical temperatures, and the larvae become free-swimming shortly after, at which point they can be started on infusoria or other fine first foods, graduating to freshly hatched brine shrimp as they grow. Because the species is sensitive to organic waste, impeccable water quality in the rearing tank is important — small, frequent water changes and careful feeding help prevent the ammonia spikes that kill young fry.

In the aquarium

Rasbora dandia is a rewarding aquarium fish for the experienced keeper who can meet its requirements for clean, stable water. It is an active surface shoaler and a known jumper: the tank must be tightly covered with no gaps, and the water quality must be maintained carefully — this species is documented as intolerant of elevated organic waste, unlike some hardier cyprinids that can tolerate degraded conditions. Regular water changes and efficient filtration are not optional.

A group of at least six is recommended to keep the fish settled and to distribute any intragroup chasing. In a well-planted, longer aquarium with gentle to moderate flow it moves confidently along the upper third of the water column. It is peaceful with similarly sized tankmates and poses no threat to fishes too large to swallow. Temperatures of 72–77 °F, pH 6.0–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water reflect both its natural range and the conditions under which it does best in captivity. Its surface orientation means it competes well for food at the film but may need supplementation of sinking foods to ensure bottom-dwellers in a mixed community are fed.

Conservation

Rasbora dandia is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated 12 August 2019. The evaluation notes its wide range and ability to cope with a variety of conditions as the basis for the LC status, while also recognising that local populations are vulnerable to pollution and habitat loss.

The species' range includes some of the most densely populated and agriculturally intensified landscapes in Asia — the river basins and paddy districts of Sri Lanka and peninsular India — where pesticide runoff, water extraction, siltation and urban pollution are ongoing pressures. Its intolerance of organic enrichment means it is likely among the first species to disappear as water quality degrades in any given catchment, even if the overall population remains secure. The IUCN assessment reflects the species as a whole; local declines are plausible in heavily impacted drainages even as the species-level status stays Least Concern.
