Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora tornieri was described by Ernst Ahl in 1922 from specimens collected in central Sumatra, which remains the type locality. The species is placed in the large, polyphyletic genus Rasbora — a wastebasket grouping that has been progressively dismembered since the 1990s as molecular and morphological work has carved out Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia and others from its ranks. Rasbora tornieri, however, has remained in the nominal genus under current revisions, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Rasbora tornieri Ahl, 1922.
GBIF confirms the family placement as Danionidae — the family to which all rasboras and danios now belong following the dissolution of the old Cyprinidae family concept at subfamily rank. No synonyms or junior names are currently recorded for this species.
Morphology
Rasbora tornieri is a moderately elongate, streamlined rasbora reaching roughly 3–3.5 in standard length (SL) in the wild, making it one of the larger members of the genus regularly encountered by hobbyists. FishBase records a maximum of 6.5 in, though this figure likely refers to total length (TL) and may conflate measurement conventions; Seriously Fish documents wild specimens consistently in the 3–3.5 in SL range, which is the best guide for aquarium planning.
The body is silvery with a faint horizontal mid-lateral stripe, and the most striking feature is the caudal fin: deeply forked and vivid yellow-orange, with a dark margin along each lobe. This bright tail gives the species its common name and makes it immediately recognisable in a crowded stream or display tank. The fins are otherwise largely clear to pale. Sexes are similar in colour; ripe females develop the deeper belly typical of gravid rasboras.
Habitat
This species is fundamentally a Sundaland lowland fish. Across Sumatra and Borneo — its core range — it inhabits the slow-moving, tannin-stained watercourses that drain the great peat-swamp forests: canals, ditches, stream backwaters and permanent pools in floodplain environments. Peat-swamp water is almost chemically pure: pH commonly falls to 3.0–6.0, hardness is negligible, and the water is deeply stained by humic acids leaching from decomposing vegetation, creating near-blackwater conditions. Water temperatures in these shallow, partially shaded lowland systems typically sit in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius.
Seasonally, Rasbora tornieri also moves into temporarily flooded areas when surrounding terrain inundates during the wet season. Records from Peninsular Malaysia and Cambodia (Mekong) suggest the species tolerates a somewhat wider suite of lowland habitats beyond the strictest blackwater, but the Sundaland peat-swamp affinity dominates its ecology.
Feeding
Rasbora tornieri is an invertivore in the wild, feeding on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates that fall into or live within its stream and peat-swamp habitats. Seriously Fish notes daphnia and artemia as representative prey items — small crustaceans and aquatic insects forming the bulk of the diet, supplemented opportunistically by whatever organic matter is available in these nutrient-poor, blackwater systems.
In the aquarium the species accepts dried foods without difficulty, but condition and colour are best maintained with a mixed diet. Frozen or live daphnia, artemia, bloodworm and small chironomid larvae are all taken eagerly and should form a regular part of feeding. The fish is an active mid-water feeder and, given its eventual size, benefits from somewhat larger prey items than would suit a nano rasbora.
Mating
Rasbora tornieri is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the typical rasbora fashion. There is no nest, no bubble-nest, and no pair bond formed beyond the act of spawning itself. In nature, seasonal flooding and the associated rise in water level and temperature likely trigger spawning activity, drawing conditioned fish into newly inundated vegetated margins where eggs are scattered among fine-leaved plants and bottom debris.
Courting males pursue gravid females actively through the vegetation, swimming alongside and nudging them until eggs and milt are released in a brief press together. The eggs, which are adhesive, settle among plants and substrate. Adults pay no attention to the spawn thereafter and will eat eggs if they encounter them.
Breeding
Breeding of Rasbora tornieri in the aquarium has not been confirmed as of current records — Seriously Fish notes this explicitly, which sets it apart from many smaller rasboras that breed readily in captivity. The species' size and its strict water-chemistry requirements (very soft, acidic conditions) are likely contributing factors, as is its relative scarcity in the hobby compared to more commonly kept congeners.
By analogy with closely related Sundaland rasboras, a successful approach would involve a separate, well-planted spawning tank set up with extremely soft, acidic, tannin-stained water at 75–79 °F. Well-conditioned fish introduced to gradually lowered pH and the addition of leaf litter or blackwater extract may stimulate spawning. Eggs would be expected to hatch within 18–48 hours, with fry becoming free-swimming a day or two later and initially requiring infusoria or green water before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation.
In the aquarium
Given its eventual size of 3–3.5 in, Rasbora tornieri is best suited to a spacious aquarium — a tank of at least 35.5 in in length is appropriate for a small group. The setup should mirror the peat-swamp conditions of its native Sundaland: warm (68–79 °F), very soft (negligible hardness), and distinctly acidic (pH 4.0–7.0 is the recommended range, with lower values in the 4–5 range more faithfully replicating wild conditions). Filtration should be gentle; peat filtration or the addition of dried Indian almond leaves or blackwater extract will maintain the tannin staining and chemistry the species prefers.
The fish is a peaceful schooling animal that should be kept in groups of at least six to eight individuals. It is compatible with similarly sized, similarly water-chemistry-matched companions — other Sundaland rasboras, small loaches or apistogramma dwarf cichlids that tolerate acidic conditions — but should not be kept with species demanding hard, alkaline water. Despite its size it is not a boisterous fish, and tankmates should not be so small as to be prey.
Conservation
Rasbora tornieri has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it is listed as Not Evaluated. This does not mean it faces no pressure — quite the opposite. Across Sumatra and Borneo, the peat-swamp forest habitats on which this species depends have been subject to severe and ongoing destruction over recent decades. Drainage and conversion for palm oil cultivation and agriculture, peat fires, logging and water extraction have destroyed vast areas of lowland peat-swamp forest, eliminating or severely degrading the blackwater stream networks that peat-swamp fish communities require.
Although R. tornieri's range across multiple Sundaland islands and mainland Indochina affords it some resilience compared to single-locality endemic species, the scale of habitat loss across Borneo and Sumatra in particular is such that populations in these areas must be under significant pressure. A formal assessment would be valuable, and any aquarium specimens should be sourced from reputable, responsibly collected or captive-bred stock.
