Rasbora trifasciata is a small, slender cyprinid endemic to the island of Borneo, described by Popta in 1905 from material collected in the Bornean interior. Like most members of a genus that spans the slow forest streams and blackwater swamps of Sundaland, it is a shoaling omnivore of gentle, vegetation-rich waters, suited in the wild to the soft, acidic conditions characteristic of Sundaic lowland drainage. It remains a data-sparse species in both the scientific and hobbyist literature, but its membership in the large and ecologically diverse genus Rasbora — anchored in Borneo's rain-forest rivers — places it among a group of fishes now recognised as belonging to the family Danionidae rather than the old broad Cyprinidae.

Taxonomy & naming

Rasbora trifasciata was described by C.M.L. Popta in 1905, placing it in the catch-all genus Rasbora that at the time accommodated nearly all small South and Southeast Asian cyprinoids with that general body plan. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Rasbora trifasciata Popta, 1905 as the valid combination.

Over the past three decades the old Rasbora has been substantially dismembered: Kottelat & Witte (1999) and subsequent authors carved out Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia, Rasboroides, Microrasbora and other genera from what was previously lumped under the name. R. trifasciata has not been reassigned from the residual Rasbora core, but the broader family placement has shifted — Danionidae (formerly the subfamily Danioninae) is now the accepted family-level home for Rasbora and its relatives rather than the sprawling Cyprinidae in the older sense.

The specific epithet trifasciata is Latin for "three-banded" (tri- = three; fasciata = banded or girdled), almost certainly referring to a lateral stripe pattern on the body, a recurrent feature in the genus. No widespread hobby common name is recorded in the available literature.

Morphology

R. trifasciata is a small fish; FishBase records a maximum standard length of 2.5 in, placing it in the lower-mid size range for the genus. The body is slender and laterally compressed in typical Rasbora fashion, with a slightly pointed snout and a terminal to subterminal mouth adapted for feeding in the water column.

The specific epithet trifasciata implies three dark longitudinal bands or stripes running along the flank, a pattern shared by several Bornean Rasbora species. Detailed morphometric or meristic data specific to this species are sparse in the accessible literature; the coloration and precise stripe anatomy are best confirmed from type material or fresh-collected specimens.

Habitat

Rasbora trifasciata is endemic to Borneo and is recorded from freshwater streams and associated waters on that island. The genus Rasbora as a whole in Sundaland occupies slow-flowing forest streams, rivers, pools, backwaters and the margins of rice paddies, typically over soft substrate with aquatic vegetation, leaf litter or submerged roots.

Bornean lowland freshwaters — particularly those in peat-swamp forest and kerangas heath-forest catchments — tend toward soft, highly acidic, tannin-stained blackwater, with very low conductivity and pH values that can drop well below 5.0 in undisturbed swamp drainage. Even streams not in peat swamps are commonly soft and moderately acidic because the ancient, heavily leached soils of Sundaland contribute very little dissolved mineral load. The specific type locality and detailed habitat parameters for R. trifasciata are not recorded in the available sources, so these general Sundaic conditions are the best available guide.

Feeding

Rasbora species are broadly omnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms — as well as plant matter, algae and organic detritus in proportion to what their habitat provides. The slender body and relatively terminal mouth of R. trifasciata are consistent with mid-water foraging rather than bottom-feeding.

No diet study specific to R. trifasciata is available in the accessible literature. In the aquarium, members of the genus accept small prepared foods readily — fine flakes, micro-pellets — and benefit from live or frozen supplements such as daphnia, baby brine shrimp and bloodworm to maintain condition.

Mating

Rasbora trifasciata is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the typical manner of the genus and family. There is no nest construction, no bubble-nest, and no mouthbrooding. Spawning is triggered by warmth and, in wild populations, by seasonal cues — rising water and rainfall that flood marginal vegetation and provide new spawning habitat.

A gravid female is pursued by a driving male through fine-leaved plants or over soft substrate; the pair release eggs and milt simultaneously, and the adhesive eggs settle among plants or on the bottom. Neither parent guards or tends the eggs; adults will eat them given access. No courtship display beyond the pursuit chase has been described for this species specifically.

Breeding

In keeping with the rest of the genus, R. trifasciata scatters adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, moss or soft substrate and provides no parental care whatsoever. Adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation.

No published captive-breeding account specific to R. trifasciata is available in the accessible literature, but the general Rasbora template applies: a separate spawning tank with fine-leaved plants or Java moss, soft and slightly acidic water in the 72–79 °F range, good conditioning on live foods beforehand, and removal of adults once eggs are laid. Eggs hatch in two to three days and larvae become free-swimming a few days after that, taking infusoria and then newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Rasbora trifasciata is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby — it does not appear to be regularly available in the trade, and specific husbandry notes are absent from mainstream hobby literature. As a Bornean Rasbora it would be expected to do best in soft, slightly acidic, warm water with dense planting, subdued lighting and the kind of tannin-stained environment that mimics Sundaic forest streams.

Should it become available, a group of at least six specimens would be appropriate — Rasbora are schooling fishes and display natural behaviour only in numbers. They suit a planted community alongside other small, peaceful Southeast Asian species. Water parameters following the genus guide: temperature 72–79 °F, pH 5.0–7.0, low hardness, gentle flow.

Conservation

Rasbora trifasciata has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; no formal assessment or category has been assigned. As a Borneo endemic the species is exposed to the severe habitat pressures that have made Bornean freshwater biodiversity one of the most threatened on Earth: conversion of lowland forest to oil-palm plantation, peat-swamp drainage and fire, river channelisation, sedimentation from logging, and the general expansion of agriculture across the Bornean lowlands have destroyed or degraded large areas of the stream and swamp habitat on which species like this depend.

Many Bornean endemic Rasbora are poorly known and may exist in only one or a few drainage basins; range-restricted endemics in heavily impacted landscapes are inherently at risk even in the absence of a formal IUCN assessment. Improved sampling and taxonomic work on Bornean cyprinoids would be needed to clarify the range, population status and threat level of R. trifasciata.
