Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora truncata was formally described by Lumbantobing in 2010 in the paper 'Four New Species of the Rasbora trifasciata-Group from Northwestern Sumatra, Indonesia', published in Copeia (2010, issue 4, doi:10.1643/CI-09-155). The species belongs to the Rasbora trifasciata species group, a cluster of small Sumatran rasboras united by shared morphological characters and overlapping distribution in the river systems of northern Sumatra.
The genus Rasbora has historically been a large, heterogeneous catch-all for small Asian cyprinids, and much taxonomic reorganisation has occurred since the mid-twentieth century. Genera such as Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Trigonostigma, Kottelatia and Rasboroides have all been carved out of the original broad Rasbora concept. Rasbora truncata and its congeners in the trifasciata group retain placement in Rasbora sensu stricto under the current Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), which is the authority followed here. The specific epithet truncata (Latin: cut short, truncated) most likely refers to a morphological feature distinguishing it from related species in the group, though the precise referent should be confirmed in Lumbantobing's original description.
Morphology
Rasbora truncata is a small, slender cyprinid reaching a maximum recorded size of 1.5 in standard length (SL). As a member of the Rasbora trifasciata group it shares the group's characteristic body plan: a laterally compressed, moderately elongate form with a subterminal to terminal mouth and a silvery or pale ground colour overlaid with dark lateral markings.
Detailed morphometric and meristic data are available only in Lumbantobing's original 2010 description; characters separating R. truncata from its three sister species described in the same paper will require consulting that source directly. The species' small adult size places it firmly among the 'dwarf rasbora' end of the genus, comparable in scale to other diminutive Sumatran Rasbora.
Habitat
The type locality of Rasbora truncata is the Alas River drainage of northwestern Sumatra, Indonesia, within Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province (approximately 3°42'N, 97°38'E). The Alas River flows through forested upland valleys of the Barisan mountain range in Aceh, feeding into the broader Singkil drainage before reaching the Indian Ocean coast.
This setting contrasts with the soft peat-swamp blackwaters associated with many lowland Sumatran Rasbora; the Alas catchment is a highland river system with clearer, relatively fast-flowing water. The region supports intact montane and submontane forest along much of its length, providing shaded, leaf-litter-strewn stream habitats. Specific water chemistry measurements from the type locality have not been widely published, but hill-stream waters in this part of Sumatra are typically soft to moderately hard and mildly acidic to near-neutral, depending on substrate geology.
Feeding
Like the great majority of small Rasbora, R. truncata is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, taking small invertebrates — insects and their larvae, microcrustaceans, worms — along with algal films, plant matter and organic detritus from the water column and substrate surface. This feeding strategy is typical of small cyprinids inhabiting forested stream environments where allochthonous input from leaf litter and overhanging vegetation forms a significant part of available food.
In captivity, related small Rasbora accept a wide range of prepared foods including fine flakes, micro-pellets and granules, supplemented with live or frozen items such as Daphnia, micro-worms and mosquito larvae, which are particularly useful for conditioning fish prior to spawning attempts.
Mating
Rasbora truncata is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in common with virtually all members of its genus. No specific courtship observations have been published for this species, but the Rasbora pattern is well-established: a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or open water, pressing alongside her briefly to trigger the simultaneous release of eggs and milt. No pair bond is formed and spawning may involve multiple males attending a single female.
Eggs are adhesive to weakly adhesive and settle among fine-leaved plants, moss, root tangles or gravel on the stream bed. There is no nest construction and no parental involvement beyond the act of spawning. Adults will readily consume their own eggs given the opportunity, a behaviour that in the wild is countered by the eggs sinking into interstices beyond the parents' reach.
Breeding
No captive breeding reports for Rasbora truncata appear to have been published, consistent with the species' near-absence from the ornamental trade. Based on the biology of related small Sumatran Rasbora, successful breeding would be expected to follow the standard egg-scatterer template: a separate, well-planted spawning tank with fine-leaved plants or Java moss, soft and mildly acidic water, and well-conditioned adults fed on live foods such as Daphnia and mosquito larvae in the days before the attempt.
Eggs scattered among the planting should be protected from the adults by removing the parents or using a breeding mesh. At tropical temperatures (around 79–82 °F) eggs of small Rasbora typically hatch within 24–48 hours, with fry becoming free-swimming a few days later and initially requiring infusoria or similarly fine first foods before graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii. Given R. truncata's highland stream origin, it may prove tolerant of slightly cooler temperatures than typical lowland Sumatran rasboras.
In the aquarium
Rasbora truncata has not established itself in the ornamental trade and is essentially unknown in hobby circles as of its description in 2010. Its small maximum size of 1.5 in SL would make it an appealing nano aquarium subject alongside similarly sized companions, and its presumed hill-stream origins suggest it would adapt to a well-filtered, moderately oxygenated setup with soft to moderately hard, mildly acidic to near-neutral water.
Should the species become available, it would logically be kept as a shoal of at least six to eight individuals to display natural schooling behaviour and reduce individual stress. A planted aquarium with open swimming space and subdued lighting to mimic the dappled canopy shade of its forest-stream habitat would represent an appropriate setup. Until captive populations are established and traded, practical husbandry advice must be extrapolated from related small Sumatran Rasbora rather than from direct experience.
Conservation
Rasbora truncata is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 27 December 2018. This evaluation reflects the species' apparently stable population within its known range in the Alas River drainage and the absence of evidence of significant decline at the time of assessment.
Nevertheless, R. truncata is an Aceh endemic with a restricted range tied to the health of Sumatran montane forest and the rivers that drain it. The Leuser Ecosystem, which encompasses much of the Alas watershed, remains one of the most biologically significant and most threatened forest blocks in Southeast Asia, facing ongoing pressure from agricultural encroachment, road development and illegal logging. While R. truncata's LC status indicates it is not currently considered at risk, any species with a highly localised distribution in a rapidly changing landscape warrants monitoring, and future surveys are needed to better define its range and population status.
