Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora tubbi was described by Martin R. Brittan in 1954. The type specimen (holotype CAS-SU 17475, deposited at the California Academy of Sciences) was collected from a stream above the Tasek waterfall near Brunei Town, Borneo. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) records the valid combination as Rasbora tubbi Brittan, 1954 — the authority is unparenthesised, confirming the species has never been moved out of Rasbora.
Rasbora tubbi is placed within the R. einthovenii species group, a loose assemblage of medium-to-large, laterally compressed rasboras sharing an elongate body plan and overlapping Sundaland distributions. The genus Rasbora itself has been considerably pruned since Brittan's era: Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia, and Rasboroides were carved out of it, and Kottelat & Witte (1999) erected Trigonostigma for the harlequin-type rasboras. These rearrangements did not affect tubbi, which has remained in Rasbora. GBIF places the species in the family Danionidae, consistent with current higher-level treatment of the cyprinoids.
The specific epithet tubbi honours an individual named Tubb; the species has no widely established English vernacular name.
Morphology
Rasbora tubbi is a comparatively large rasbora, reaching up to 4 in standard length — considerably bigger than the diminutive boraras and harlequin-type rasboras familiar to most hobbyists, and more in line with the larger members of the einthovenii group. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, with a pointed snout and a moderately forked caudal fin.
Beyond its placement in the einthovenii group and the size data recorded by FishBase, detailed published morphometric and colour descriptions in freely accessible sources are sparse. Like other members of the group, it is likely silvery or pale-sided with subdued lateral markings — characteristic of larger rheophilic rasboras of the Sundaland lowlands — but precise coloration data from live specimens is not well documented in the accessible literature at the time of writing.
Habitat
The type locality of Rasbora tubbi is a stream above the Tasek waterfall near Brunei Town (now Bandar Seri Begawan), northern Borneo. Subsequent records extend the known range to the Belait and Temburong river systems in Brunei and to the Rampayoh and Mendaram rivers in Malaysian Borneo. These are lowland to foothill freshwater streams of the Bornean interior, benthopelagic in character.
FishBase reports water parameters of pH 6.2–7.8 and a hardness range of 2–18 dH, spanning soft-to-moderately-hard conditions, with temperatures of 72–82 °F. This breadth likely reflects records from different localities across northern Borneo rather than tolerance of extreme ends simultaneously. The streams of this region flow through a mosaic of lowland dipterocarp forest, riparian vegetation and, increasingly, disturbed or converted land, and many support tannin-tinged water of low to moderate hardness.
Feeding
Specific dietary studies on Rasbora tubbi have not been published in the accessible literature. Based on its body size, morphology and placement in the R. einthovenii group, it is expected to be an omnivorous opportunist typical of larger Sundaland rasboras — consuming aquatic and terrestrial insects, small invertebrates and organic detritus, with some plant matter or algae taken incidentally.
In an aquarium setting, members of the einthovenii group generally accept good quality flake and pellet foods without difficulty, with live and frozen foods (daphnia, bloodworm, brine shrimp) supporting condition and natural behaviour.
Mating
No published account of courtship behaviour in Rasbora tubbi exists in the accessible literature. As a member of the genus Rasbora and the broader Danionidae, it is expected to follow the characteristic egg-scattering reproductive strategy of the group. Courtship likely involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female through the water column or among vegetation, with eggs and milt released together in brief contact, as documented for other members of the einthovenii species group.
There is no evidence of pair bonding, nest construction or any form of parental care. Adults of egg-scattering rasboras are known to consume their own eggs given the opportunity.
Breeding
Rasbora tubbi has not been documented as bred in captivity in the accessible literature, and detailed accounts of its reproductive biology in the wild are lacking. By analogy with other medium-to-large Rasbora of the einthovenii group, it is an egg-scatterer that deposits adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs over plants, roots or substrate, with no parental care; adults should be separated from eggs after spawning to prevent predation.
Any serious captive breeding attempt would logically begin with soft-to-moderate, slightly acidic water (pH 6.2–7.0) and temperatures in the upper part of its recorded range (77–81 °F), replicating the warm lowland Bornean stream conditions of its type locality. The relative scarcity of the species in the trade means practical breeding reports remain essentially absent.
In the aquarium
Rasbora tubbi is rarely if ever encountered in the mainstream aquarium trade and is not established as a hobbyist species. Its relatively large adult size — over 4 in SL — means that if it were to become available, it would require a spacious tank, at least 47 in in length, with good filtration and open swimming room appropriate to an active mid-water schooling fish.
Water parameters drawn from FishBase suggest a tolerance of pH 6.2–7.8 and temperatures of 72–82 °F, which would make it compatible with a broadly neutral, soft-to-moderate Sundaland community. It would logically be kept in a group of six or more individuals, as rasboras of this size are shoaling animals that display their best behaviour in numbers. Until the species becomes more widely available and studied in captivity, specific husbandry notes remain largely inferential.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Rasbora tubbi as Data Deficient in 2019, reflecting a genuine absence of sufficient information on its population size, range extent and trend to assign a threat category. The known range — a handful of river drainages in Brunei and adjacent Malaysian Borneo — is limited in extent, and the species appears to have been collected only rarely since Brittan's original description in 1954.
The broader conservation context for freshwater fishes of northern Borneo is one of significant and accelerating pressure. Deforestation, oil palm conversion, riparian habitat degradation, river sedimentation and water extraction threaten stream assemblages across the island. Brunei retains a higher proportion of intact forest than much of Malaysian Borneo, which offers some protection to streams within its territory. MyBIS (Malaysia Biodiversity Information System) records regional distribution confirming Bornean presence, but systematic surveys of the species across its potential range have not been published. Improved survey effort is needed before its status can be formally reassessed.
