Rasbora vaillantii is a small, slender cyprinid endemic to the island of Borneo, where it inhabits the freshwater streams and wetlands of East Kalimantan. Described by Popta in 1905, it remains one of the lesser-known members of the sprawling genus Rasbora — a Sundaland fish tied to the forest rivers and seasonally flooded lowlands of Indonesian Borneo. Records from the Sebuku drainage, Sungai Tulit, and the Mesangat wetlands place it among the region's soft-water fauna, a fish of tannin-stained channels and forested river margins that has attracted little aquarium attention despite its neat proportions and graceful schooling behaviour.

Taxonomy & naming

Rasbora vaillantii was formally described by Popta in 1905. It belongs to the genus Rasbora as recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the governing authority for valid names. The genus Rasbora has been substantially revised over recent decades: Kottelat and colleagues carved out a number of genera from the old, broadly defined Rasbora — among them Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia and Rasboroides — but Rasbora vaillantii has remained within the core genus rather than being transferred to any of these segregates.

The species is a member of the Sundaland rasbora fauna, a diverse assemblage of small cyprinids distributed across Sumatra, Borneo and the Malay Peninsula. Documentation of R. vaillantii from the wild remains sparse compared with commercially exploited congeners, and its taxonomy has not been subject to recent molecular revision. No subspecies are recognised, and no aquarium trade synonyms are in wide use.

Morphology

Rasbora vaillantii reaches a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 3 in, making it a moderately sized member of a genus that ranges from tiny microrasboras of around 1 in to the larger trevally-like barb rasboras approaching 6 in or more. The body form is the classic Rasbora shape: elongate, laterally compressed and streamlined, with a small, slightly upturned mouth suited to mid-water feeding and a forked caudal fin.

Detailed colour descriptions from systematic literature are sparse for this species, but Bornean Rasbora typically carry a lateral stripe or band of silver or dark pigment running the length of the flank, with an olivaceous or brownish dorsum and a pale silvery belly. Sexual dimorphism is presumed to follow the genus norm, with females becoming noticeably deeper-bodied and rounder in the abdomen when gravid; males tend to remain slimmer throughout the year.

Habitat

Rasbora vaillantii is endemic to Borneo and has been documented specifically from East Kalimantan in Indonesian Borneo, with records from the Sebuku drainage, the Sungai Tulit tributary, and the Mesangat wetlands — a lake-and-swamp system in the middle Mahakam basin known for its biodiverse freshwater fauna. FishBase characterises the species as benthopelagic in freshwater, meaning it occupies the lower-to-mid water column rather than being a strict surface or bottom-dweller.

The broader habitat type inferred from its distribution and congeners is the forested stream and lowland wetland typical of Sundaland. These environments are characterised by slow to moderate flow, abundant leaf litter and submerged root systems, soft substrate, and water coloured amber to dark brown by dissolved humic and tannic acids from decaying organic matter. Water temperatures in lowland East Kalimantan typically range through the mid twenties Celsius, with pH values frequently acidic to mildly acidic and dissolved mineral content low.

Feeding

Like virtually all small Rasbora, R. vaillantii is an opportunistic omnivore in the wild, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, small worms and similar items — from the water column and the surface film, supplemented by algae, fungal spores, and organic particulates suspended in the water. In the tannin-rich forest streams and wetlands it inhabits, the invertebrate community tends to be dominated by chironomid midge larvae, small cladocerans and ostracods.

In captivity the species can be expected to accept a wide range of prepared foods. High-quality small pellets and flake food form a practical base diet, but condition and colouration are best maintained with regular offerings of live or frozen daphnia, artemia nauplii, bloodworm and similar small invertebrate foods that replicate the natural prey spectrum.

Mating

Rasbora vaillantii is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no persistent pair bond and no parental investment beyond the act of spawning itself. Courtship follows the standard pattern for the genus: an actively driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or open water, pressing alongside her as eggs and milt are released simultaneously into the water column or among fine-leaved plants and roots.

Spawning is stimulated by the seasonal and environmental cues typical of Sundaland rasboras — rising water temperatures, changing day length and the influx of soft, slightly cooler fresh water that accompanies Borneo's rainfall seasons. There is no nest, no territory defended around a spawning site, and no bonding between adults after eggs are released. Adults that remain in the spawning area will consume eggs given the opportunity.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Rasbora vaillantii follows the approach used for other mid-sized Sundaland rasboras. A separate shallow breeding tank with a fine-mesh or loose plant-mat base — clumps of Java moss, spawning mops or similar fine-leaved vegetation — allows the scattered adhesive eggs to settle out of reach of the spawning adults. Very soft, slightly acidic water (pH in the range of 5.5–6.8, low mineral content) that mirrors the soft blackwater conditions of its East Kalimantan habitat is recommended.

A well-conditioned group of two or three males to one or two females is introduced in the evening, and spawning typically occurs in the early morning. Adults should be removed promptly after spawning is complete. Eggs hatch within two to three days at tropical temperatures; the larvae are free-swimming within a further two to three days and can be started on infusoria and cultured microorganisms before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. No parental care occurs at any stage.

In the aquarium

Rasbora vaillantii is an uncommon aquarium fish despite its appealing size and the general popularity of Bornean rasboras among experienced hobbyists. It is a schooling species that should be maintained in groups of at least six to eight individuals; kept in small numbers it becomes timid and loses the natural shoaling behaviour that best displays the species. Calm, comparably sized tankmates that share its preference for soft, slightly acidic water make the best companions.

The aquarium should replicate the soft, dimly lit, organic-rich conditions of East Kalimantan's forested waterways: a dark substrate, dried leaf litter, root or driftwood structures and gentle filtration that maintains good oxygenation without strong turbulence. Temperatures in the range of 72–79 °F and acidic pH between 5.5 and 7.0 are appropriate. The species is likely intolerant of hard, alkaline water, and long-term maintenance in such conditions would be expected to compromise health and longevity.

Conservation

Rasbora vaillantii is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2022.2 assessment). Its recorded range in East Kalimantan spans the Sebuku drainage and Mesangat wetland system, habitats that fall within a region experiencing significant land-use pressure from palm oil plantation expansion, coal mining, timber extraction and infrastructure development.

The Mesangat wetlands in particular are a recognised biodiversity hotspot facing ongoing pressure from drainage and conversion, which represents a potential local threat even for species currently assessed as Least Concern. FishBase records a low vulnerability index to overfishing, consistent with a small, productive schooling species. Monitoring of Bornean endemic fish populations in relation to wetland conversion remains a priority for freshwater biodiversity conservation in the region.
