Mastacembelus tinwini is a medium-sized spiny eel of mainland Southeast Asia, native to the river systems of Myanmar and the adjacent drainages of Thailand, Laos and the middle Mekong. Despite the name it is not a true eel: it belongs to the family Mastacembelidae, order Synbranchiformes, kin to the swamp eels but quite unrelated to the catadromous true eels of the order Anguilliformes. Described by Ralf Britz in 2007, it is recognisable by a striking pattern of five dark longitudinal bands along its flanks, fin margins edged in white, and a body that reaches roughly 15–15.5 in. It reaches the aquarium trade only rarely, and little is documented about its behaviour in captivity, but it shares the nocturnal, burrowing, escape-prone character common to all spiny eels.

Taxonomy & naming

Mastacembelus tinwini was described in 2007 by the ichthyologist Ralf Britz, in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 18, number 3, page 258). The type locality is the Thaton market in Mon State, Myanmar, pointing to specimens collected from the Salween drainage. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists it as a valid species in the genus Mastacembelus, the type genus of the family Mastacembelidae within the order Synbranchiformes.

This placement makes the crucial taxonomic point about the fish: it is not a true eel. True eels belong to the order Anguilliformes; the spiny eels of Mastacembelidae are members of Synbranchiformes and are more closely related to the swamp eels of the family Synbranchidae than to anything in Anguilliformes. The elongate, sinuous body is a case of convergent evolution on a burrowing, substrate-dwelling way of life, not a sign of close kinship with marine or catadromous eels.

The genus Mastacembelus is large and geographically broad, spanning tropical Asia and Africa. The African Mastacembelus were for many decades split into separate genera — Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus, Afromastacembelus — but most authorities now fold them back into a broadly-defined Mastacembelus. M. tinwini is an Asian species and has always sat in Mastacembelus without controversy.

Morphology

Mastacembelus tinwini reaches approximately 14.5–15.5 in in total length. Like all spiny eels the body is greatly elongated and laterally compressed toward the tail, covered in minute embedded scales beneath a protective coat of mucus rather than the visible scales of most bony fishes. The snout is drawn forward into the characteristic fleshy, trunk-like rostral appendage of the spiny eels, bearing paired tubular nostrils used to probe the substrate for prey. A series of short, isolated dorsal spines runs ahead of the long soft dorsal fin, which continues around the tail and merges with the anal fin — the "spiny" character that names the group.

The species is most readily identified by its colour pattern: five regular parallel black longitudinal bands run along the flanks on a pale or brownish ground colour. These bands are frequently interrupted or broken into blotches rather than being continuous solid lines, giving the flanks a dashed or chain-like appearance. The margins of the soft dorsal, anal and caudal fins carry a distinctive white border. FishBase records the meristic formula as 36–39 dorsal spines, 64–71 dorsal soft rays, 3 anal spines, 63–73 anal soft rays, and 89–93 vertebrae. No consistent external differences between the sexes have been described, though ripe females may become broader-bodied.

Habitat

Mastacembelus tinwini is native to freshwater lowland rivers and streams of southern Myanmar, particularly the Salween drainage, with the Catalog of Fishes also recording it from the Irrawaddy basin, peninsular Malaysia and Thailand, and the middle Mekong basin in Thailand and Laos. Its core range is the Salween and its tributaries in Mon and Karen States of Myanmar, where the type specimens were sourced.

It is a demersal species — a bottom-dweller — associated with the substrate of freshwater rivers and streams. Like most spiny eels it is expected to favour soft or sandy bottoms into which it can burrow, and sheltered microhabitats such as submerged roots, leaf litter and rocky crevices. The Salween and Irrawaddy systems carry warm, typically soft-to-neutral lowland water, and the species is adapted to the thermal and chemical regime of these rivers — warm through most of the year, with seasonal fluctuations driven by monsoon flooding. Precise pH and hardness data for the species have not been published.

Feeding

Mastacembelus tinwini is a carnivore. All spiny eels are nocturnal predators of the substrate, using the sensitive fleshy rostral appendage to probe leaf litter, sand and detritus for invertebrates and small animals. In the wild the diet likely comprises aquatic insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and other benthic organisms, following the general pattern documented for its congeners.

Aquarium Glaser's account notes that larger tankmates are ignored but smaller fish may be consumed — a typical pattern for medium-to-large spiny eels that are not aggressive toward fish above a certain size threshold but will opportunistically eat anything that fits in the mouth. In captivity the species should be offered meaty foods suited to a nocturnal bottom-feeder: earthworms, bloodworm, small invertebrates and similar live or frozen fare presented in the evening or after lights-out.

Mating

Mastacembelus tinwini is a spiny eel — not a true eel — and its reproductive biology follows the pattern of the Mastacembelidae rather than the catadromous strategy of the Anguillidae. It breeds in fresh water and does not undertake a marine spawning migration. Nothing specific has been published about its courtship behaviour in the wild, but by analogy with other Mastacembelus the spawning is expected to be triggered by the rising, warming floodwaters of the monsoon season, with conditioned adults coming together briefly to spawn among submerged vegetation.

Spiny eel courtship, where observed, typically involves the male circling or entwining the female before the pair scatter eggs. There is no nest construction and no pair bond sustained beyond the spawning event. The rarity of the species in the trade means that captive observations are essentially absent from the hobbyist literature.

Breeding

As a spiny eel, Mastacembelus tinwini is an egg-scatterer that gives no parental care. A courting pair scatters adhesive eggs among fine aquatic plants, roots or leaf litter in fresh water; neither parent tends the eggs or larvae after spawning. This is the standard Mastacembelidae reproductive mode — distinct from the bubble-nest-building and male-guarding of the swamp eels (Synbranchidae), and completely unlike the semelparous oceanic spawning run of the true eels (Anguillidae).

The species is described as appearing in the aquarium trade only very rarely, and there are no published accounts of captive breeding. A successful spawning would presumably follow the template documented for better-known congeners: large water changes with cooler, softer water mimicking the monsoon onset, a mature pair in a spacious tank with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and patience. Eggs would be expected to hatch within a few days, with tiny larvae requiring very small first foods before graduating to baby brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Mastacembelus tinwini reaches around 15.5 in and is offered only very rarely in the aquarium trade, making it a specialist fish. The same principles that apply to all spiny eels govern its care: a tight-fitting, sealed lid is mandatory, as spiny eels are accomplished climbers and escape artists that will leave an open tank and die on the floor. The substrate should be soft sand, deep enough for the fish to bury itself completely — this is not optional behaviour but a daily biological need. Dim lighting and plenty of caves, pipes and shaded retreats help an established fish emerge and feed with confidence.

Like all Mastacembelidae the species is scaleless and therefore acutely sensitive to copper-based medications, which are lethal at doses safe for scaled fish. Water quality must be consistently high; organic waste from a meaty diet accumulates quickly and the fish's mucus coat offers little protection against parasites or bacterial infection in degraded water. Tankmates should be large enough not to be eaten at night. Given these requirements and its rarity in the trade, it is a fish for the committed specialist rather than the general community aquarist.

Conservation

Mastacembelus tinwini is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. The species has a distribution spanning the Salween, Irrawaddy, Mekong and peninsular drainages — a range broad enough that it is not considered at risk of range-wide decline at present.

Nevertheless, the rivers it inhabits face mounting pressure across the region. The Salween is one of the last major free-flowing rivers in mainland Southeast Asia, but large dam projects are proposed or under construction on the mainstream and tributaries, with consequences for the fish communities that depend on seasonal flood pulses and intact migratory corridors. Deforestation, agricultural runoff and sand extraction affect lowland reaches across Myanmar, Thailand and Laos. The species' rarity in the aquarium trade suggests collection pressure is currently low, but the narrow geographic concentration of described specimens — mostly from southern Myanmar — means that localised habitat degradation could have disproportionate impact on its known populations.
