Taxonomy & naming
Macrognathus maculatus was described by the French zoologist Georges Cuvier in 1832; the parenthetical authority notation reflects a subsequent reassignment to the genus Macrognathus, which is the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) accepted genus for this species. It sits within the family Mastacembelidae, the spiny eels, in the order Synbranchiformes — the same order that contains the swamp eels (Synbranchidae). This placement underlines the central taxonomic point: despite its common name and serpentine shape, Macrognathus maculatus is not a true eel at all. The true eels belong to the Anguilliformes, a wholly different vertebrate order; the eel-like body of the Mastacembelidae is convergent, evolved independently as an adaptation to burrowing and bottom life.
The genus Macrognathus is distributed across tropical Asia — India, Indochina, Sundaland and southern China — and is distinguished from the closely related Mastacembelus primarily by the number and arrangement of dorsal spines and certain cranial characters. Several species in the genus are superficially similar and have been confused in the trade; M. maculatus is characterised by the freckled or spotted pattern on the body that gives it its specific epithet (from Latin maculatus, 'spotted') and its common name of frecklefin eel.
Morphology
Macrognathus maculatus is a slender, elongate spiny eel reaching a reported maximum of 11 in total length, making it one of the smaller members of the family and considerably more manageable than large Asian Mastacembelus such as the fire eel or tire-track eel. The body is laterally compressed posteriorly, tapering to a pointed tail, and is superficially scaleless — the tiny embedded scales are concealed under a coat of thick mucus. Ahead of the soft dorsal fin runs a row of short, isolated dorsal spines, the diagnostic "spiny" feature of the family. The snout is drawn into a fleshy, mobile rostral proboscis with tubular nostrils, a sensory organ used to probe the substrate for hidden prey.
The coloration consists of a pale to brownish background covered with small dark spots and freckling across the dorsal surface and flanks, the pattern that inspires both the specific epithet and the vernacular name. The fins tend to be similarly patterned or have spotted margins. Sexes are not reliably distinguished by external characters, though gravid females become noticeably fuller in the body before spawning.
Habitat
The frecklefin eel inhabits fresh and occasionally brackish waters of lowland Southeast Asia: rivers, streams, canals, rice paddies and floodplains at low elevation, typically in areas with dense aquatic vegetation, soft or muddy substrates, and abundant leaf litter into which it can burrow. Its known range spans Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, and the Sundaic islands of Borneo, Java and Sumatra.
Water conditions across this range are warm and variable: temperatures broadly in the range of 73–79 °F, pH from around 6 to 8 (optimal near neutral, approximately 7.0), and hardness of roughly 6–35 dH — reflecting the soft, slightly acidic to slightly alkaline waters of lowland tropical river systems. The species is nocturnal and largely crepuscular, sheltering beneath the substrate or within plant roots and leaf litter by day and foraging across the bottom after dark. It may also enter slightly brackish water at the tidal margins of its range, though it is essentially a freshwater animal.
Feeding
Macrognathus maculatus is a carnivore that forages primarily at night, using its sensitive fleshy snout to probe vegetation, leaf litter and soft substrate for invertebrate prey. In the wild it takes small live foods including worms, insect larvae, crustaceans and other benthic invertebrates — items recorded from closely related Macrognathus species include tubificid worms, Daphnia, Cyclops and mosquito larvae.
In the aquarium it is most readily fed on live or frozen invertebrate foods: bloodworm, tubifex, brine shrimp and small earthworm pieces are all accepted. Newly imported or recently settled fish may be reluctant to feed in daylight and in the presence of observers; feeding after the tank lights are out encourages natural behaviour and uptake. Over time many individuals extend their diet to accept sinking pellets, but live or frozen meaty foods remain the core of the diet.
Mating
Spiny eels are egg-scattering spawners and Macrognathus maculatus follows the Mastacembelidae pattern: there is no pair bond, no nest, and no parental involvement beyond the act of spawning. It is not a true eel and is not catadromous; it does not undertake any migration to the sea and breeds in fresh water. Spawning is understood to be triggered by seasonal cues — the onset of the monsoon rains, rising water levels, and warming or fluctuating temperatures — that mimic the natural flood cycle of its lowland river habitats.
Courting pairs are reported to entwine and move together through vegetation before the female scatters adhesive eggs among fine plant stems, roots or leaf litter. The male does not guard the eggs and no bubble-nest is constructed; this is not a bubble-nesting or mouthbrooding species. Behavioural observation in the wild is limited by the fish's nocturnal habits and turbid habitat, and most accounts draw on aquarium observations.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Macrognathus maculatus, like that of most spiny eels, is rarely achieved by hobbyists and the species is largely wild-caught or pond-raised for the trade. Members of the family Mastacembelidae are substrate egg-scatterers that give no parental care: a spawning pair scatters adhesive eggs among vegetation, roots or rocky substrate, after which the adults play no further role and the eggs are best separated if any attempt at rearing is made. The eggs hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures.
Where aquarium spawnings have been induced, they have generally followed conditioning on live foods and a subsequent change in water parameters — cooler, softer water or a large fresh-water change — to simulate the monsoon transition. The larvae are initially very small and require fine live foods before graduating to larger items. Successful rearing outside a specialist or commercial setting remains uncommon, and the frecklefin eel should be assumed to be a wild-caught fish when purchased.
In the aquarium
Macrognathus maculatus is one of the more accessible spiny eels for the home aquarium by virtue of its modest adult size — a maximum of around 11 in means it can be housed comfortably in a tank of 35.5 in or more, rather than the 59–78.5 in footprint required by the large Mastacembelus species. The essentials of care are shared across the family: a deep bed of soft sand or fine-grade substrate into which it can bury itself completely, a secure and fully sealed lid (spiny eels are accomplished escape artists that can squeeze through very small gaps and breathe at the surface), and a dark, planted or caverich aquascape that gives it places to shelter by day.
Like all Mastacembelidae it is scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based medications and to poor water quality; a stable, mature system with regular maintenance is essential. It tolerates warm neutral water — 73–79 °F, pH 6–8, moderate hardness — and is generally peaceful toward tankmates too large to be swallowed. It is best not kept with very small fish or shrimp, which may be eaten at night. Given appropriate conditions it is a long-lived, personable fish that becomes more active and visible with time and familiarity.
Conservation
Macrognathus maculatus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its wide distribution across Southeast Asia and its tolerance of a range of lowland freshwater and marginally brackish conditions. It is present across multiple large river basins and is not believed to face a range-wide decline at present.
The lowland river and floodplain habitats on which it depends are nonetheless subject to considerable pressure across its range — irrigation infrastructure, agricultural runoff, sand extraction, wetland drainage and aquatic vegetation removal all affect the shallow, vegetated habitats this species favours. It is also collected for the ornamental fish trade. For now its breadth of range affords it security, but localised depletion is possible where habitat conversion and collection combine, particularly on the Sundaic islands where forest-river systems face severe land-use change.
