Mastacembelus dictyon is a newly described spiny eel from the Mekong drainage of Laos, named in 2025 by Britz and Kottelat for the network of dark interconnected lines that lace its flanks. Despite the word 'eel' in every common name applied to the group, it is not a true eel: it belongs to the family Mastacembelidae within the order Synbranchiformes, placing it far closer to the swamp eels than to the catadromous marine true eels of the order Anguilliformes. Long hidden within the M. armatus species complex and referred to in older literature as either M. armatus or M. favus, it was elevated to full species status on the strength of a consistently lower vertebral and fin-ray count and a distinctive reticulate colour pattern. A nocturnal, scaleless burrower of the warm lowland rivers of mainland Southeast Asia, M. dictyon is virtually unknown in the aquarium hobby as a named species, though fish sold under the tire-track or zig-zag eel label in its range almost certainly include it.

Taxonomy & naming

Mastacembelus dictyon was described by Ralf Britz and Maurice Kottelat in 2025, making it one of the most recently formalised members of the genus. It belongs to the M. armatus species group, a cluster of large, reticulate-patterned Asian spiny eels that were for many years lumped under the catch-all name Mastacembelus armatus — a situation now recognised as representing several distinct species. Prior to its description, M. dictyon circulated in the literature and in the trade under the names M. armatus and M. favus, and separating it from those congeners requires examination of vertebral counts and colour pattern rather than any single glance characteristic.

The family Mastacembelidae belongs to the order Synbranchiformes, which it shares with the swamp eels (Synbranchidae). This makes spiny eels the distant kin of air-breathing mud-burrowers like Monopterus, not of the true marine and catadromous eels of the order Anguilliformes. The eel shape is a convergence on the same elongated, burrowing body plan; the two lineages are not closely related. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the genus Mastacembelus across Africa and tropical Asia, and M. dictyon sits firmly within the Asian branch. The genus name Mastacembelus is built from the Greek mastax (jaws, mouth) and emballo (to thrust in), alluding to the fleshy, probing snout that is the genus's most recognisable feature.

Morphology

Mastacembelus dictyon is a large, elongate, laterally compressed spiny eel with the distinctive fleshy, trunk-like snout tipped with tubular nostrils that characterises the genus. Running along the back ahead of the soft dorsal fin is a row of short isolated dorsal spines — the 'spiny' of spiny eel — and the soft dorsal continues around the tail into the anal fin in the continuous caudal fin typical of the family.

The species is diagnosed within the M. armatus group primarily by meristic characters: fewer caudal-fin rays (13–15, versus 18–20 in M. armatus), fewer abdominal vertebrae (35–39, versus 42–43), fewer caudal vertebrae (47–51, versus 51–55), and a lower total vertebral count (85–90, versus 94–97). Dorsal-fin spines number 33–37, compared with 37–38 in M. armatus. It differs from the closely related M. favus in colour pattern rather than meristics, with the dark body marked by a distinctive network of interconnected lines — the díktyon of the name — rather than the spot or ocellus pattern of that species. The body is scaleless to casual inspection, covered instead in minute embedded scales and a coat of protective mucus. Mature females become fuller-bodied when ripe; otherwise the sexes are externally similar.

Habitat

The type locality of Mastacembelus dictyon is the Mekong drainage of Laos. The Mekong is one of the great rivers of Southeast Asia, draining a broad lowland basin through Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam before emptying into the South China Sea. Within this system, spiny eels of the M. armatus group occupy a range of freshwater habitats keyed to seasonal water levels: rocky substrates and main-channel areas during the dry season, spreading onto canals, floodplain lakes, and flooded marginal ground during the monsoon.

Like other large Mastacembelus, M. dictyon is presumed to favour soft-bottomed areas where it can burrow, emerging to forage at night over sandy or silty river beds and among submerged roots and leaf litter. Water parameters in the Mekong lowlands are broadly warm (around 72–82 °F), with a pH tending toward neutral or slightly acidic (approximately 6–7.5). The fish is scaleless and sensitive to copper and poor water quality, as is typical of the family. It does not undertake any marine migration and is a resident of fresh water throughout its life.

Feeding

Mastacembelus dictyon is a nocturnal carnivore in the mould of all large spiny eels. The elongated body and down-turned, probing snout are the tools of a benthic forager that hunts after dark, working the river bed with the sensitive fleshy proboscis to locate invertebrates buried in or living among the substrate: insect larvae, worms, crustaceans, molluscs, and small fish.

In the aquarium, congeners in the same species group readily accept earthworms and bloodworm as core foods, with other frozen and live invertebrates supplementing the diet. Large specimens can be conditioned to take sinking pellets over time. Because the fish is shy and strictly nocturnal, feeding after lights-out substantially improves intake; newly imported fish in particular will often refuse to feed in daylight or while observed. It is a deliberate feeder and should not be housed with fast, competitive species at mealtimes.

Mating

Spiny eels are egg-scattering spawners, and M. dictyon is not a true eel; it does not make any marine migration to spawn. Mating takes place entirely in fresh water, and for congeners in the M. armatus group, spawning is thought to be triggered by the seasonal rise in water level and temperature that accompanies the monsoon floods. A courting pair entwine and move together among vegetation before scattering adhesive eggs, a behaviour shared across Mastacembelidae generally.

No specific mating observations have been documented for M. dictyon itself, which was only formally named in 2025 and remains essentially unstudied in the wild. Behaviour is inferred by close analogy with M. armatus and related species. There is no pair bond maintained beyond the spawning act, and no nest of any kind is built. The male does not build a bubble-nest — that is a behaviour of the distantly related Monopterus swamp eels, not of Mastacembelidae.

Breeding

Mastacembelidae breed as egg-scatterers: the pair scatters adhesive eggs among fine plants, roots, or leaf litter in fresh water, after which the adults take no further interest in them. No parental care is given. For the family broadly, eggs hatch within a few days (accounts for congeners report hatching in approximately three days at 77–81 °F), and the fry are very small and require infusoria-grade first foods before they can manage newly hatched brine shrimp.

Breeding large spiny eels in the home aquarium is rarely achieved. Conditioning a compatible pair on a varied diet, performing regular large water changes, and providing soft-bottomed planting that mimics flood-season marginal habitat are the reported prerequisites. For M. dictyon specifically, no captive spawnings have been documented — the species was described in 2025 and is not yet in regular trade as a named entity. Most fish sold as tire-track or zig-zag eels in the hobby are wild-caught; pond-reared stock produced on a commercial scale in Southeast Asia is more reliably available than tank-bred specimens of any large Mastacembelus.

In the aquarium

Mastacembelus dictyon is not yet an established aquarium fish in its own right: it was described in 2025, and specimens in the hobby are almost certainly included among fish sold as tire-track or zig-zag eels (M. armatus) from Mekong sources. The care demands are those of all large Mastacembelus: a spacious tank with a deep bed of soft sand into which the fish can bury itself entirely, ample caves and shaded retreats, and excellent filtration capable of handling a sizeable nocturnal carnivore. Adult size in congeners runs to 35.5 in, and lifespans of a decade or more in captivity are documented, so the commitment is substantial.

A fully sealed, tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable. Spiny eels are accomplished escape artists that can force surprisingly small gaps, will climb filter tubes, and can travel some distance out of water before desiccating; deaths on the floor overnight are a routine occurrence in tanks that are not completely closed. The species is scaleless and sensitive to copper-based medications and to deteriorating water quality, so medications must be chosen carefully and water maintenance must be consistent. It is best kept alone or with large, robust species that cannot be swallowed; it will take small tank-mates at night. Given the appropriate set-up — soft substrate, low light, meaty evening feeds of earthworm and bloodworm — large spiny eels settle into long-lived and surprisingly personable fish.

Conservation

Mastacembelus dictyon was described in 2025 and has not yet been assessed by the IUCN Red List. As a species newly split from within the M. armatus complex, its range within the Mekong basin remains to be fully delimited, and no population data specific to M. dictyon exist. Its conservation status is therefore unknown.

The Mekong lowlands face significant and ongoing pressure from hydropower dam construction — the mainstream cascade is already substantially altered, with serious consequences for fish passage and seasonal flood-pulse dynamics that large spiny eels depend on for spawning cues. Sand extraction, agricultural runoff, and harvest for both the food and ornamental fish trades add further pressure across the basin. Until the species' range, population size, and specific threats are surveyed, nothing confident can be said about its trajectory, but the habitat pressures on the Mekong's freshwater fish fauna are among the most acute in Asia.
