Macrognathus semiocellatus is a slender spiny eel of mainland Southeast Asia's lowland wetlands — a nocturnal burrower of Mekong floodplains and marshy channels that hides itself in soft silt by day and probes the bottom for invertebrates by night. Despite the familiar eel shape it is not a true eel at all: it belongs to the family Mastacembelidae, the spiny eels, placed in the order Synbranchiformes alongside the swamp eels and far removed from the catadromous true eels of the order Anguilliformes. Its elongate, scaleless body is a convergent solution to a shared burrowing lifestyle, not a mark of shared ancestry with marine eels. Described by Roberts in 1986, it is a relatively small species reaching around 7.5 in standard length, currently assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, and known in the hobby as an active if secretive aquarium fish suited to soft, warm, well-planted tanks.

Taxonomy & naming

Macrognathus semiocellatus was described by Tyson Roberts in 1986. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) places it in the genus Macrognathus, the smaller-bodied of the two major Asian spiny-eel genera alongside the larger Mastacembelus. Both genera sit in the family Mastacembelidae, which itself belongs to the order Synbranchiformes — a group that also includes the swamp eels (Synbranchidae) but has nothing to do with the true eels. The true eels are the order Anguilliformes; the spiny eels are not related to them. The superficial resemblance is convergence on an elongate, burrowing body plan.

The genus Macrognathus is characterised by relatively fewer pre-dorsal spines than Mastacembelus and is widely distributed across India, Indochina, and Sundaland. Macrognathus semiocellatus is counted among the Indochinese members; the specific epithet semiocellatus — Latin for 'half-eyed' or 'half-spotted' — likely refers to markings along the dorsal region, though the precise allusion Roberts intended to the pattern of this species is not elaborated in brief secondary treatments.

Morphology

Macrognathus semiocellatus is a small to mid-sized spiny eel reaching a maximum of approximately 7.5 in standard length (FishBase). The body is greatly elongate and laterally compressed posteriorly, scaleless in appearance and covered by a thick coat of mucus over small embedded scales. The snout tapers to a fleshy, mobile proboscis with tubular nostrils, the diagnostic feature of mastacembelid spiny eels. Along the dorsal midline runs a row of isolated short spines — 28 to 32 in number — ahead of the soft dorsal fin, which flows into the caudal and anal fins in a continuous margin. Dorsal soft-ray counts run 46–58 and anal soft-ray counts 53–65 (FishBase).

Sexual dimorphism is not pronounced. Ripe females are reported to be noticeably broader-bodied than males, particularly in the abdominal region during the spawning season, but otherwise the sexes are externally similar in colour and fin shape.

Habitat

Macrognathus semiocellatus is endemic to Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, with records from the Mekong, Chao Phraya, and Mae Klong river systems. It is a fish of lowland wetlands: marshes, seasonally flooded fields, slow backwaters, and heavily vegetated channels where fine silty or sandy substrates accumulate. It burrows into the bottom by day — sometimes leaving only the head exposed — and relies on soft unconsolidated sediment both for shelter and for foraging.

Water conditions in its native range are warm, soft to neutral, and typically lightly coloured with dissolved organics from surrounding vegetation and leaf litter. Recorded parameters are 75–82 °F with pH 6.8–7.8, typical of Mekong lowland water bodies. It is not a fish of rocky or rapidly flowing highland streams; the seasonal flood pulse of Indochina's great river systems shapes its ecology, and it is likely most active on flooded margins during the wet season when insect production peaks.

Feeding

Macrognathus semiocellatus is a nocturnal, benthic carnivore. Its foraging strategy mirrors that of other mastacembelids: it rests buried or in shelter by day, then works the bottom after dark, using the sensitive fleshy snout to probe silt and plant debris for prey. In the wild this means insect larvae, small crustaceans, and worms detected tactilely rather than visually.

In the aquarium it takes bloodworm, small earthworm sections, frozen invertebrates, and in time will often accept sinking pellets offered after lights-out. Feeding in darkness or dim light is recommended when the fish is new to the tank; competition at mealtimes from faster-feeding species should be avoided, as this small spiny eel forages slowly and will not compete aggressively for food.

Mating

Spiny eels are egg-scattering spawners that do not form lasting pair bonds or guard their spawn, and Macrognathus semiocellatus is not a true eel — it does not undertake any marine migration to breed. Spawning takes place in fresh water and is thought to be triggered by the seasonal rise in water level and temperature that characterises the Mekong flood pulse. Related Macrognathus species are reported to court by circling and briefly entwining among vegetation before a pair scatters adhesive eggs.

Observations of mating behaviour in this species specifically are not well documented in the available literature. Analogies to congeners and to better-studied mastacembelids suggest that the male pursues the female and that spawning occurs in shallow, vegetated margins during or just after the onset of seasonal rains, but this inference has not been confirmed by published field study.

Breeding

Macrognathus semiocellatus is a substrate egg-scatterer that gives no parental care. Adhesive eggs are scattered among fine plants, roots, or leaf litter in fresh water; neither the eggs nor the larvae are tended by either parent. The species has rarely been bred in the home aquarium, and most information on reproductive biology comes by analogy with other Macrognathus rather than from documented captive spawnings of this species itself.

Where related spiny eels have been induced to spawn in captivity, success has generally followed conditioning the adults on live and frozen invertebrates, followed by a large, slightly cooler water change to simulate seasonal flooding. Eggs hatch in a few days at warm temperatures, and the larvae require very fine live foods before they can manage newly hatched brine shrimp. The practical difficulty of sexing, conditioning, and inducing a compatible pair in an appropriate set-up means captive breeding remains uncommon.

In the aquarium

Macrognathus semiocellatus is a manageable spiny eel for an intermediate hobbyist, being considerably smaller than the fire eel and more suited to a modestly sized aquarium. A well-established tank of 20–30 US gal with a deep bed of fine sand, scattered flat stones and bogwood for daytime shelter, and low to moderate flow is appropriate for one or a pair. As with all spiny eels it is scaleless and acutely sensitive to copper-based medications; careful water maintenance and copper-free treatments are essential.

A tight, fully sealed lid is non-negotiable. Macrognathus, like all mastacembelids, is an escape artist that will find and exploit any gap; they can breathe atmospheric air briefly and will crawl out of open or loosely covered tanks and die on the floor. The species is nocturnal and most active after lights-out, so evening feeding — bloodworm, small worm sections, frozen invertebrates — suits its schedule. It is generally peaceful with fishes too large to be swallowed, though very small tankmates or shrimp are at risk. Water quality must be kept stable: this species is sensitive to elevated ammonia and nitrite.

Conservation

Macrognathus semiocellatus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2022). It is described as locally and seasonally common across its Indochinese range, and no significant range-wide threats have been identified that would push it toward a threatened category at present.

Nevertheless, the lowland wetland habitats it depends on — Mekong floodplains, seasonal marshes, and vegetated backwaters across Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam — face ongoing pressure from dam construction along the Mekong mainstream and tributaries, conversion of wetlands to agriculture, and water extraction. These forces fragment and reduce the shallow, vegetated, slow-water environments that support the species. The Least Concern designation reflects current data; as monitoring improves and the cumulative effects of Mekong basin development become clearer, the status of wetland-dependent fishes in this region will merit continued attention.
