Mastacembelus micropectus is a small, slender spiny eel endemic to Lake Tanganyika — the oldest and deepest of Africa's Great Rift lakes — where it inhabits shallow rocky coastal zones. Despite its common grouping with "eels", it is not a true eel at all: it belongs to the family Mastacembelidae, order Synbranchiformes, whose members share only a convergent body plan with the unrelated Anguilliformes. Named for its distinctively reduced pectoral fins, this little-known species reaches just under 7 in standard length and is one of the many Mastacembelus that radiated within Tanganyika's ancient, mineral-rich waters.

Taxonomy & naming

Mastacembelus micropectus was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Hubert Matthes in 1962 from Lake Tanganyika. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) maintains it within the genus Mastacembelus, the type genus of the family Mastacembelidae — the spiny eels — placed in the order Synbranchiformes. This is the critical taxonomic point: M. micropectus is not a true eel. The true eels are the order Anguilliformes, which contains the catadromous Anguilla and their marine relatives; the spiny eels occupy a completely separate lineage, and their elongate body form is a case of convergent evolution tied to a burrowing lifestyle.

The African members of Mastacembelus were historically assigned to separate genera — Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus, Afromastacembelus — based on morphological differences in eye structure and lateral-line canals; modern treatments have generally folded these back into Mastacembelus. Lake Tanganyika hosts a remarkable flock of Mastacembelus species that colonised the lake approximately 7–8 million years ago and diversified rapidly, making M. micropectus part of one of the most celebrated evolutionary radiations in freshwater biology.

Morphology

Mastacembelus micropectus is a small species, reaching a recorded maximum of 7 in standard length (male or unsexed), making it among the smaller members of its genus. The body is greatly elongate and laterally compressed posteriorly, covered in minute embedded scales and a mucus coat rather than the visible scales of most teleosts. The characteristic spiny-eel snout is fleshy and slightly elongated into a probing rostrum with tubular anterior nostrils; the mouth is small and directed downward for benthic feeding. A row of short, isolated dorsal spines precedes the soft dorsal fin, which runs continuously with the anal fin to the tapering tail tip.

The most diagnostic feature, enshrined in the species name, is the conspicuously reduced pectoral fin — micropectus means "small-chested" in Latin, reflecting fins that are noticeably vestigial relative to most congeners. This character distinguished the species at original description. Coloration details are not well documented in the available literature; the species is described as cryptic and demersal, consistent with a rock-dwelling, crevice-dwelling lifestyle. Vertebral count is recorded as 82.

Sexual dimorphism has not been described for this species. As with other spiny eels, ripe females may become visibly fuller-bodied, but no reliable external characters are established.

Habitat

Mastacembelus micropectus is endemic to Lake Tanganyika, one of the world's oldest, deepest and most ancient lakes, straddling the borders of Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Burundi. Within the lake it occupies shallow, demersal, rocky coastal habitats — the cobble and boulder zones of the shoreline where crevices and interstices provide shelter and foraging opportunities for a small, secretive eel-shaped predator.

Lake Tanganyika's water chemistry is distinctive and must be replicated in any captive attempt: the lake is hard and strongly alkaline, with pH values in the range of 8.6–9.4 (typically around 9.0 in surface waters), general hardness around 11 dGH, and carbonate hardness of 18–20 dKH. These are mineral-rich, highly oxygenated, very clear waters — the opposite of the soft, slightly acid lowland river conditions associated with Asian spiny eels. M. micropectus is a rift-lake specialist adapted entirely to this chemistry and cannot be kept in the soft, acidic conditions used for its Asian relatives.

Feeding

Mastacembelus micropectus is a demersal carnivore. Like its congeners, it uses its sensitive, probing snout to locate small invertebrates within rocky substrate — insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and other benthic organisms are the likely dietary staples based on the feeding ecology of closely related Tanganyikan spiny eels.

In the aquarium it should be offered meaty protein foods suited to a small benthic predator: frozen or live bloodworm, small earthworm pieces, brine shrimp and similarly sized invertebrate-based foods. Like most spiny eels, it is likely nocturnal or crepuscular in its foraging, and feeding after lights-off helps ensure shy specimens receive adequate nutrition without competition from more active tankmates.

Mating

No direct observations of mating behaviour in Mastacembelus micropectus have been published. Based on the biology of the Mastacembelidae and the broader Tanganyikan spiny-eel fauna, the species is expected to follow the spiny-eel pattern of egg-scattering with no parental investment. It is not a true eel and does not undertake any marine migration; breeding takes place in freshwater within the lake.

Spawning in spiny eels is generally thought to be triggered by seasonal cues — rising temperature, changing water level or increased rainfall runoff — though for a deep rift-lake endemic the precise triggers may differ from the riverine species whose spawning is studied more often. Courtship likely involves the pair entwining among rock crevices or vegetation before eggs are scattered.

Breeding

Mastacembelus micropectus has not been reported to breed in captivity, and the species is essentially absent from the ornamental trade. Spiny eels as a group are egg-scatterers in fresh water: a pair deposits adhesive eggs among vegetation, root tangles or rock crevices, then provide no parental care whatsoever — the eggs and larvae are left to develop unattended. This is fundamentally different from the swamp-eel (Synbranchidae) pattern of bubble-nest building with male guarding, and from the semelparous oceanic migration of the true eels.

For an aquarist interested in attempting a spawning, the critical requirement would be providing stable, hard, alkaline water replicating Tanganyika conditions, along with rocky structure for the pair to shelter in. Eggs, once scattered, would need to be moved to a separate hatching tank to avoid predation. Success would be exceptional given how rarely any Lake Tanganyika Mastacembelus has been bred outside specialist facilities.

In the aquarium

Mastacembelus micropectus is very rarely available in the trade and is not a species routinely kept by aquarists. When maintained, it requires conditions that reflect its rift-lake origin: hard, highly alkaline water (pH 8.6–9.0, KH 18–20, GH around 11 dGH), strong circulation and high oxygenation, and a rocky aquascape with plentiful crevices and overhangs to substitute for the boulder zones of the Tanganyikan shoreline. Unlike the Asian spiny eels, which prefer soft, slightly acid water and fine sand, this species is a hard-water specialist and will not thrive in soft-water conditions.

Like all spiny eels, M. micropectus is scaleless and therefore acutely sensitive to copper-based medications and salt treatments — any disease treatment must be copper-free. It should be housed in a fully sealed aquarium with no gaps: spiny eels are accomplished escape artists capable of squeezing through any opening in a lid or past filter pipes. Nocturnal and cryptic by nature, it needs dim lighting or shaded retreat spots and will spend much of the day hidden. At under 7 in it can be housed in a moderately sized Tanganyika community aquarium alongside appropriate rift-lake cichlids, other small Tanganyikan endemics and peaceful bottom-dwellers; it should not be kept with fish small enough to be prey items.

Conservation

Mastacembelus micropectus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2006 assessment). It is endemic to Lake Tanganyika, and while a lake-endemic species is inherently restricted in range, the shallow rocky shoreline habitat it occupies extends around much of the lake's perimeter and supports a broadly intact fauna.

Lake Tanganyika itself faces well-documented threats including overfishing, sedimentation from deforestation in the watershed, and warming of surface waters linked to climate change — all of which affect the lake's extraordinary biodiversity. The spiny eels of the lake are not heavily targeted by fisheries and are largely absent from the ornamental trade, but their dependence on intact, rocky, near-shore habitat makes them vulnerable to coastal development, artisanal fishing with non-selective gear, and any long-term alteration of the lake's water clarity and chemistry. The current Least Concern assessment reflects the absence of documented population decline, not immunity to these pressures.
