Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus moorii was described by the Belgian ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1898, making it one of the earliest-described members of what is now understood to be a remarkable radiation of spiny eels within Lake Tanganyika. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the governing authority for valid names) places it in the genus Mastacembelus, the type genus of the spiny-eel family Mastacembelidae within the order Synbranchiformes. This placement is the key taxonomic fact: despite its common name, the fish is not a true eel. The true eels are the order Anguilliformes; the spiny eels are not closely related to them, and their elongate body is convergence on a burrowing way of life.
The African members of Mastacembelus were for many years split into separate genera, including Caecomastacembelus and Aethiomastacembelus. Mastacembelus moorii was for a time classified as Caecomastacembelus moorii, but that genus was synonymised with Mastacembelus in 2005 and the current valid combination is Mastacembelus moorii Boulenger, 1898.
The Lake Tanganyika mastacembelids are the subject of active evolutionary study because the lake appears to have generated its own endemic spiny-eel radiation — a cichlid-parallel story of explosive speciation in an ancient, isolated rift-water basin. M. moorii is one of several species in this flock that inhabit distinct depth zones and microhabitats within the lake.
Morphology
Mastacembelus moorii is a moderate-to-large spiny eel reaching a maximum recorded length of 17.5 in TL, though most aquarium specimens are kept at somewhat smaller sizes. The body is greatly elongate and laterally compressed toward the tail, scaleless to casual inspection, and coated in a layer of protective mucus. The snout terminates in the characteristic fleshy, trunk-like proboscis of the genus, equipped with tubular anterior nostrils used to probe the substrate and crevices for hidden prey. Along the dorsal midline, a row of short isolated spines precedes the soft dorsal fin, which is continuous with the caudal and anal fins around the tapered tail — the arrangement that gives the family its common name.
The ground colour is typically tan to brown or yellowish-brown, often marked with darker mottling, blotches, or indistinct banding that provides camouflage among the rock and sediment of the Tanganyika littoral. Like all mastacembelids, the fish lacks true scales at the body surface, making it particularly sensitive to abrasion, copper-based medications, and deteriorating water quality. Females in breeding condition may be visibly broader in the body than males, but sexing is otherwise difficult in this species.
Habitat
Mastacembelus moorii is endemic to Lake Tanganyika, the second-deepest lake on Earth and a major centre of freshwater biodiversity in the East African Rift. Within the lake it occupies the littoral zone — the rocky and sediment-rich shallow margins — where it shelters by day and forages at night. It is common to abundant at many localities around the lake, which spans the borders of Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and Zambia.
The water chemistry of Lake Tanganyika differs sharply from the soft, acidic conditions associated with many tropical riverine fish. The lake is hard and alkaline, with a pH typically in the range 7.3–8.0 and a hardness of 20–35 dH, and it is well-oxygenated and clear. Water temperatures in the littoral zone run approximately 77–82 °F year-round. This is emphatically not soft, acidic water — keepers who maintain it in conditions appropriate for, say, a West African river spiny eel will find it suffers. The hard, alkaline rift environment must be replicated for the fish to thrive.
Feeding
Mastacembelus moorii is a nocturnal carnivore and piscivore. FishBase records a diet of small fish alongside invertebrates, and the probing fleshy snout is the principal sensory instrument it uses to locate prey hidden in substrate crevices or sediment. In the littoral rock habitat of Lake Tanganyika it likely takes invertebrates, small crustaceans, insect larvae, and the juveniles of the lake's abundant cichlids.
In the aquarium it should be offered meaty foods in the evening hours, when it is naturally active: bloodworms, earthworms, whole frozen shrimp, pieces of fish, and similar items are accepted. Like most mastacembelids it is a slow, deliberate feeder and will not compete well with fast, boisterous tankmates at the surface; target feeding with a pipette or tongs after lights-out is helpful with newly settled fish.
Mating
Mastacembelus moorii is a spiny eel and — contrary to what the name might imply — it does not undertake any catadromous spawning migration; it breeds entirely in fresh water like all members of Mastacembelidae. It is not a true eel, and the marine spawning mythology of the Anguillidae does not apply. Spiny eels are egg-scattering spawners: a courting pair comes together briefly, with the male pursuing and entwining around the female, and eggs are scattered adhesively among fine vegetation, roots, or rocky crevices without the formation of any nest.
There is no parental pair bond and no guarding behaviour after spawning. In Lake Tanganyika the seasonal cues that trigger spawning in the wild are not well documented for this species, but temperature fluctuation and changes in food availability associated with the lake's two-season cycle are likely stimuli.
Breeding
Mastacembelus moorii is rarely bred in the home aquarium, and most fish available in the trade are wild-collected from Lake Tanganyika. The combination of hard, alkaline chemistry requirements, the species' nocturnal and secretive nature, and the difficulties of conditioning and sexing a compatible pair means that captive spawnings have not been routinely documented. Breeding mode follows the spiny-eel pattern: adhesive eggs scattered among vegetation, rock crevices, or debris in fresh water, with no parental care provided by either parent after spawning.
Where captive spawning of Tanganyika mastacembelids has been attempted, replicating the lake's water chemistry closely — hard, alkaline, clean and warm — appears to be the primary prerequisite. Eggs are small and the larvae extremely small at hatching, requiring infusoria or equivalent microscopic first foods before they are large enough to take newly hatched brine shrimp. The absence of routine captive breeding means virtually all M. moorii in the hobby are wild-caught imports.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus moorii is an intermediate-to-advanced aquarium species. Its most critical requirements diverge from those of the more familiar Southeast Asian spiny eels: the water must be hard and alkaline (pH 7.3–8.0, dH 20–35, temperature 77–82 °F), matching Lake Tanganyika's rift chemistry rather than the soft, acidic conditions of a rainforest river. This makes it a natural candidate for a Tanganyika community alongside cichlids such as Neolamprologus or Altolamprologus, provided those tankmates are not small enough to be eaten at night.
Like all mastacembelids it is scaleless and therefore sensitive to copper-based medications, ich treatments containing malachite green, and any form of chemical deterioration in the water. A sealed, tight-fitting lid is mandatory — spiny eels are accomplished escape artists that climb the glass, squeeze through any gap, and will die on the floor overnight. The tank should include substantial hiding places: flat rocks, slate shelving, large caves, and a substrate of fine sand or smooth gravel that does not abrade the belly. The fish is nocturnal and will be invisible for most of the day; a quiet tank with dim light will encourage more visible behaviour over time. At 17.5 in maximum length it is manageable in a tank of around 47 in or more, though larger is always better for a long-lived rift-lake predator.
This is not a community fish in the broadest sense — small tetras, fry, and nano fish will disappear into it — but it coexists well with the medium-to-large, robust Tanganyika cichlids that share its native water chemistry and make up the core of a rift-lake display.
Conservation
Mastacembelus moorii is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2006 assessment). The species is described as common to abundant at many localities around Lake Tanganyika, and no widespread major threats have been identified that would suggest a range-wide decline. Because it is endemic to Lake Tanganyika, however, its entire global range is contained within a single water body shared by four countries — Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and Zambia — making it inherently more vulnerable than a widespread riverine species to any systemic change in the lake's condition.
Lake Tanganyika faces ongoing pressures including overfishing, sedimentation from deforestation in the surrounding watershed, and water temperature increases associated with climate change that have strengthened thermal stratification and reduced deep-water oxygen levels. None of these is currently considered to have pushed M. moorii toward a threatened category, but the lake's endemic faunas — including its extraordinary cichlid and mastacembelid radiations — remain a global conservation priority, and the species should be purchased from reputable suppliers who source wild fish responsibly.
