Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus simbi was formally described by Emmanuel Vreven and Melanie Stiassny in 2009. The holotype (AMNH 247179) was collected from a small rocky outcrop across the main channel of the Congo River from Lenga Lenga, near the border with the Republic of Congo in Bas-Congo Province, Democratic Republic of Congo. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS — the authority for valid names) places it in the genus Mastacembelus, the type genus of the family Mastacembelidae within the order Synbranchiformes.
This placement is the key taxonomic fact about the fish: it is an "eel" by shape and habit, not by ancestry. The true eels belong to the order Anguilliformes; spiny eels are not closely related to them, and their serpentine form is a case of convergence on a burrowing, elongate way of life. African members of Mastacembelus were historically parcelled into separate genera — Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus, Afromastacembelus — before being folded back into Mastacembelus; M. simbi was described directly into Mastacembelus and has always sat there. It is one of a diverse assemblage of Congo River and rift-lake Mastacembelus species found across Central and West Africa.
Morphology
Mastacembelus simbi is a dwarf species, reaching a maximum of 3 in standard length — notably small even by the standards of the smaller African spiny eels. The body is greatly elongate, scaleless to the touch (tiny embedded scales lie beneath a coat of mucus), and laterally compressed toward the tail. Along the dorsal surface runs a series of short, isolated spines ahead of the soft dorsal fin, the defining character of the spiny eels as a group; the dorsal and anal fins are continuous around the pointed tail.
The species is distinguished by its full pigmentation pattern, which includes an oblique bar across the cheek and a series of vertically-oriented bars along the midlateral flank — markings that separate it from the other small Mastacembelus of the lower Congo basin. Sexual maturity is reached at around 2.5 in SL, and ripe females carry mature ovarian eggs approximately 0.5 in in diameter. As in other spiny eels, sexes are externally similar except for the broader abdomen of gravid females.
Habitat
The type locality of Mastacembelus simbi is a rocky outcrop in the main channel of the lower Congo River near Lenga Lenga, in the Bas-Congo Province — a stretch of the river well known for its extreme hydraulic conditions, with some of the fastest and most turbulent freshwater currents on earth. The species is associated with shallow marginal habitats among rocks near rapids and fast-flowing water, an unusual niche compared with the sandy, slow-water preferences of most larger spiny eels.
FishBase records the water as tropical fresh water in the range of 81–84 °F. The lower Congo at this latitude is warm and highly oxygenated, particularly in the rapids zone, and the fish's association with rocky, swift-water margins suggests a higher tolerance for current and a preference for rocky interstitial refuges rather than soft substrate burrows. The distribution appears to be restricted to the lower Congo between roughly Lenga Lenga and Luozi, making it a narrow-range endemic in one of the world's most biodiverse river systems.
Feeding
Mastacembelus simbi is carnivorous. FishBase records a trophic level of 3.4 (±0.6), consistent with a diet of small benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and other organisms probed from rocky crevices and the substrate. As with other spiny eels, the fleshy, tubular-nostrilled snout is well suited to exploring and extracting prey from confined spaces, and feeding activity is likely concentrated at night.
No detailed dietary study of this species in the wild appears to have been published. Given its small adult size and rocky rapid habitat, the prey items available to it differ from those of larger congeners living in soft-substrate lowland rivers: small insect larvae and microcrustaceans adapted to fast water are the probable dietary staples. In the aquarium, dwarf spiny eels of this size class typically accept bloodworm, small live and frozen invertebrates, and occasionally micro-pellets.
Mating
Like all spiny eels, Mastacembelus simbi is not a true eel and does not undertake any marine or migratory spawning journey. It breeds in fresh water and belongs to the family Mastacembelidae, in which spawning involves a courting pair scattering adhesive eggs among aquatic vegetation, roots or rocky crevices, with no parental care extended beyond the act of spawning itself.
Females reach maturity at approximately 2.5 in SL and carry mature ovarian eggs (around 0.5 in in diameter) when ripe, as recorded from specimens observed in July — a finding suggesting seasonality in reproductive condition that may be linked to the Congo River's annual flood pulse. No detailed observations of courtship behaviour in the wild or in captivity appear to exist for this species.
Breeding
Mastacembelus simbi is a substrate egg-scatterer in the Mastacembelidae pattern: a courting pair scatter adhesive eggs among vegetation, plant roots, leaf litter, or rocky interstices in fresh water, and provide no parental care after spawning. The eggs hatch into small, demanding larvae. No successful aquarium breeding of this species has been recorded in the published or hobbyist literature, and it is extremely rare in the aquarium trade.
The observation that females were found with mature ovarian eggs in July hints at a seasonally cued breeding cycle, possibly triggered by fluctuating water levels or temperature shifts associated with the Congo basin's hydrological cycle — a pattern broadly consistent with other African Mastacembelus. The dwarf body size (maximum 3 in) means that, if aquarium breeding were attempted, it would require a well-planted, fine-leaved tank rather than the large, soft-substrate set-ups required for the bigger spiny eels.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus simbi is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby and is not available through conventional trade channels. Its very small adult size — under 3 in — means that, unlike the fire eel or tire-track eel, it would not require the large systems needed for its bigger relatives, but its association with rocky, fast-flowing lower Congo habitats presents different care challenges: strong current, high oxygenation, rocky structure and warm water (81–84 °F) would be priorities over the deep sand beds suited to lowland spiny eels.
Like all spiny eels, it is scaleless and sensitive to copper-based medications and to chronically poor water quality; a mature, stable, well-filtered aquarium with no copper exposure would be essential. Spiny eels are escape artists as a family — they can squeeze through tiny gaps, breathe at the surface, and require a fully sealed, tight-fitting lid regardless of species size. Its rarity and wild capture requirements make it a fish for the specialist only, and there is no commercial captive-bred supply.
Conservation
Mastacembelus simbi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List (status: Not Evaluated). As a species described only in 2009 from a restricted stretch of the lower Congo River — the reach between Lenga Lenga and Luozi in Bas-Congo Province — it is by definition a narrow-range endemic in a river that is among the most heavily fished and ecologically pressured in Central Africa.
The lower Congo rapids zone that the species inhabits is not subject to damming in the same way as the upper river, but artisanal fishing pressure, sand extraction, and habitat disturbance in the Bas-Congo corridor are real concerns. The extraordinary fish diversity of the Congo rapids — a system that harbours more endemic fish species per stretch than almost any other river on earth — is only partially understood, and species such as M. simbi discovered in the 2000s remain data-deficient with regard to population size and trend. Formal IUCN assessment and field surveys to characterise its true range and abundance would be a valuable conservation priority for this distinctive dwarf spiny eel.
