Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus traversi was described in 1997 by Vreven and Teugels in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 8(1): 81–87, from material collected in the Congo River basin. The original genus assignment was Aethiomastacembelus traversi — Aethiomastacembelus being one of several African spiny-eel genera erected to separate the continent's endemic forms from the type genus. In 2005 the same authors revised the classification and placed both Aethiomastacembelus and the closely related Caecomastacembelus into synonymy with Mastacembelus Scopoli, restoring all African spiny eels to that broader genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) now records the species as Mastacembelus traversi (Vreven & Teugels, 1997), with the parenthetical brackets around the authors reflecting the change of genus from the original combination.
Mastacembelidae are spiny eels of the order Synbranchiformes, the same order that contains the swamp eels (Synbranchidae). Their relationship to the true eels of the order Anguilliformes is distant — the elongate, burrowing body of a spiny eel is a case of convergence on a shared way of life, not evidence of close kinship. The species epithet traversi honours a collector or contributor associated with the type material, as is common in Congolese ichthyological literature of that period.
Morphology
Mastacembelus traversi is a medium-sized spiny eel reaching a recorded maximum of about 14 in standard length (SL) according to FishBase. Like all mastacembelids it is greatly elongate and laterally compressed toward the tail, superficially eel-like but structurally very different: the body is covered in tiny embedded scales overlaid with mucus rather than the overlapping scale-rows of most teleosts, and the typical proboscis-like snout with paired tubular nostrils marks it as a probing, substrate-rooting predator.
Along the dorsal surface runs the defining character of the family — a row of short, isolated spines ahead of the soft dorsal fin, the "spiny" that gives the group its common name. As with most African Mastacembelus, detailed external colour descriptions in the primary literature are limited; the species is known from preserved museum material and market specimens, and colour in life has not been formally documented. Sexes are externally similar in the few individuals on record.
Habitat
Mastacembelus traversi is recorded from the lower Congo River, Pool Malebo (the broad lake-like expansion of the Congo above Kinshasa), and Wagenia Falls in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and from the fish market of Bangui in the Central African Republic — market material frequently indicates a catchment origin in the Ubangi River and its tributaries feeding the Congo system. All confirmed records are from freshwater, tropical lowland habitat: the Congo basin in this reach is characterised by large, warm rivers with variable flow, abundant submerged structure, and soft substrates of sand and silt where spiny eels can burrow.
FishBase classifies the species as freshwater, benthopelagic — that is, associated with the bottom but capable of some movement in the water column. No published temperature or pH measurements are associated with the collection sites specifically for this species, but the lower Congo mainstream runs warm (typically 75–82 °F) and at moderate, near-neutral pH under natural conditions. The species is unlikely to be found in the fast, oxygen-depleted stretches of the Congo's lower canyon, but rather in the calmer backwaters and marginal habitats of the broader river reach.
Feeding
FishBase records a trophic level of 3.8 ± 0.6 for Mastacembelus traversi, placing it firmly in the category of a carnivore feeding on invertebrates and possibly small vertebrates rather than a specialist herbivore or detritivore. This is consistent with the broader mastacembelid feeding strategy: the fleshy, probing snout is adapted for rooting through sand and silt to find benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, crustaceans and similar prey — and the down-turned mouth is positioned for bottom-level capture rather than open-water pursuit.
No detailed dietary analysis from stomach content studies is available in the published literature specifically for M. traversi, but its morphology and trophic level align it closely with other African Mastacembelus of similar size, which are benthic generalist predators of macroinvertebrates. Like most spiny eels it is likely nocturnal or crepuscular in activity, using tactile and olfactory cues from its rostral organ to locate prey after dark.
Mating
Mastacembelus traversi is a spiny eel — a mastacembelid — and like other members of the family it is expected to be an egg-scattering spawner that breeds in fresh water without parental care. It is not a true eel and does not undertake any marine migration: spiny eels are purely freshwater fish that spawn in the river itself, with spawning likely triggered by seasonal rises in water level, temperature change, or increased rainfall associated with the Congo's bimodal wet seasons.
No specific mating observations have been published for this species. In other African and Asian Mastacembelus, courtship involves a male following and nudging the female, with the pair entwining briefly before adhesive eggs are scattered among fine vegetation, roots, or leaf litter in shallow, vegetated marginal water. The pair do not form a lasting bond and separate after spawning.
Breeding
No captive breeding of Mastacembelus traversi has been documented, and the species is sufficiently obscure that it has not entered the mainstream aquarium trade. In the broader context of spiny-eel reproduction, adhesive eggs scattered among vegetation hatch in two to four days at tropical temperatures, and the resulting larvae are tiny and require minute live foods before transitioning to larger prey.
As with other African Mastacembelus, any captive spawning attempt would likely require replication of seasonal cues — a period of slightly cooler, softer water followed by warming and raising the water level — to simulate the onset of rains. Adults give no parental care to eggs or larvae. The combination of specialised habitat requirements, modest trade presence, and the general difficulty of breeding spiny eels means M. traversi remains unrecorded as a captive-bred species.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus traversi is not an established aquarium species, and it is rarely if ever offered in the ornamental trade. Should specimens become available — as occasional bycatch in Central African export shipments — they would require care broadly consistent with other medium-sized African spiny eels: a soft sand substrate deep enough for full-body burrowing, caves and root tangles for daytime shelter, and a securely sealed, gap-free lid. Spiny eels are accomplished escape artists that can climb, squeeze through small openings, and breathe briefly at the surface, and an uncovered tank is a fatal hazard.
The species is scaleless and therefore sensitive to copper-based medications and to deteriorating water quality; only a fully cycled, mature system with low nitrates is appropriate. It should be fed meaty foods after dark — earthworms, bloodworm, and similar invertebrate fare — and housed with tankmates too large to be swallowed and robust enough not to be harassed. At a maximum size around 14 in it is manageable in a moderately sized aquarium by spiny-eel standards, but its rarity means that any keeper who obtains specimens should treat them as wild-caught ambassadors of a poorly known Congo species.
Conservation
Mastacembelus traversi is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 16 February 2009. The evaluation reflects the species' presence across a portion of the lower Congo basin — a river system of enormous scale that, in its central reaches, remains relatively intact compared to many of Africa's smaller waterways. The Congo's discharge volume and the inaccessibility of much of its basin have historically buffered its fish fauna against some of the worst pressures.
Nonetheless, the lower Congo and Pool Malebo are subject to intensive artisanal fisheries and urbanisation pressure around Kinshasa and Brazzaville, and the species' restricted known range — confined to a relatively short reach of the lower river and adjacent systems — gives reason for ongoing monitoring. Data on population trends for this little-known species are essentially absent, and any deterioration of the lower Congo's benthic habitats from sand mining, pollution, or flow modification would affect bottom-associated species like this spiny eel before it could be detected in a formal assessment.
