Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus ubangipaucispinis was described by Tyson R. Roberts in 2021. The species sits in the genus Mastacembelus, the type genus of the family Mastacembelidae — the spiny eels — placed within the order Synbranchiformes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) governs the valid name; the Mastacembelidae are the authority for its placement. The broader order Synbranchiformes also encompasses the swamp eels (Synbranchidae), a group of air-breathing, hermaphroditic freshwater fishes, but the spiny eels are not related to the marine and catadromous true eels (order Anguilliformes). The eel-like body is convergent on a burrowing lifestyle, not a mark of shared ancestry with Anguilla.
The African members of Mastacembelus were historically divided into satellite genera — Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus, and Afromastacembelus — before modern revisions folded them back into Mastacembelus. Roberts described two new low-spine-count African spiny eels simultaneously in 2021: M. ubangipaucispinis from the Ubangi River and M. kadeiensis from the Kadei River, another Congo-basin tributary. The two share the distinctive character of having very few dorsal-fin spines relative to other mastacembelids.
Morphology
Like all mastacembelids, Mastacembelus ubangipaucispinis has the characteristic elongate, laterally compressed body of the spiny eels, with a mobile, trunk-like rostral proboscis tipped with nostrils and used to probe the substrate. The dorsal surface bears a row of short isolated spines ahead of the soft dorsal fin; it is this row that defines the family name. The defining diagnostic feature of M. ubangipaucispinis is its low dorsal-fin spine count of ten, which is unusually reduced for the genus and forms the basis of the species epithet.
The coloration has been described as well-developed and distinctive, and the species bears a similarity in pattern to Mastacembelus paucispinis. Precise colour descriptions from the original description are the primary record; the body is otherwise typical of Central African mastacembelids in its elongate, scaleless construction covered with a mucous coat. Detailed meristics beyond the spine count remain sparse in the available literature.
Habitat
Mastacembelus ubangipaucispinis is known from the mainstream rapids of the Ubangi River, a major right-bank tributary of the Congo River forming part of the border between the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The type locality places the species in large, fast-moving, well-oxygenated riverine habitat — the turbulent sections of a large lowland Congo-basin river rather than still backwaters or floodplain lakes.
Like other African spiny eels of comparable habitat, it likely shelters among rocks, root tangles, and crevices in the rapids by day, emerging into slower marginal water at night to forage. The Congo basin's mainstream rivers are generally warm, low in dissolved minerals, and slightly acidic to neutral, a profile consistent with lowland Central African rivers. Detailed water-chemistry records from the type locality are not yet available in the accessible literature.
Feeding
No feeding observations specific to Mastacembelus ubangipaucispinis have been published. By analogy with other Mastacembelus of similar size and habitat, it is almost certainly a nocturnal benthic carnivore, using its sensitive, probing rostral appendage to locate and excavate invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, and crustaceans — from the substrate and among crevices. Spiny eels broadly are opportunistic predators that will also take small fishes when the opportunity arises.
The rapid-current habitat of the Ubangi mainstream suggests the diet may include rheophilic invertebrates adapted to life in swift water, and foraging likely intensifies during the night when the fish venture from their daytime retreats. No captive feeding records are available for this species.
Mating
Mastacembelus ubangipaucispinis has not been observed spawning in the wild or in captivity, and no mating behaviour has been reported. As a member of the family Mastacembelidae, it is expected to follow the spiny-eel reproductive pattern: a courting pair entwine among vegetation or root structure in fresh water and scatter adhesive eggs without forming a lasting pair bond or providing parental defence. This is entirely distinct from the catadromous spawning migration of the true eels (Anguilla), which travel thousands of kilometres to breed once at sea and die; spiny eels remain in fresh water throughout their lives.
Spawning in mastacembelids is generally understood to be triggered by seasonal cues — rising water temperature, increased flow, and the onset of rains — that simulate the flooding pulse of the river. In the Ubangi's seasonal Congo-basin climate, spawning likely corresponds to the wet season when river levels rise over flooded margins, though this remains unconfirmed for this species.
Breeding
No captive breeding of Mastacembelus ubangipaucispinis has been reported; the species was described only in 2021 and does not yet appear to be established in the aquarium hobby. Based on the mastacembelid pattern, spawning would involve the pair scattering small adhesive eggs among fine plant material, roots, or leaf litter in fresh water. No nest is built, no parental care is given, and both adults disperse after spawning. Eggs of other mastacembelids typically hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures, producing tiny, demanding larvae that require infusoria-grade first foods.
Should the species enter the hobby, breeding would likely follow the protocols documented for other African Mastacembelus: a mature, well-conditioned pair in a heavily planted or root-rich tank, with a cool-water change to simulate seasonal rainfall, may prompt spawning. Success rates in the home aquarium for African spiny eels are generally low even for well-established species.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus ubangipaucispinis does not appear in the aquarium trade as of its description in 2021 and is not known to have been exported or kept in captivity. Should specimens become available, care requirements would follow those of other mid-sized African spiny eels: a well-maintained, mature freshwater aquarium with a deep bed of fine soft sand for burrowing, caves and driftwood tangles for daytime refuge, and a tight-fitting lid with no gaps. All mastacembelids are determined escape artists that can squeeze through very small openings, and the scaleless body is highly sensitive to copper-based medications and to deteriorating water quality.
Feeding would be meaty and preferably offered after lights-out — earthworms, bloodworm, and frozen invertebrates are the staples for related species. Peaceful but robust tankmates that are too large to be eaten are appropriate companions. The water parameters should reflect the warm, soft-to-neutral profile typical of Central African lowland rivers. The species' rapids habitat suggests it may appreciate moderate flow and strong oxygenation in captivity.
Conservation
Mastacembelus ubangipaucispinis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; as a species described in 2021, no formal evaluation has been completed. Its conservation status is therefore Not Evaluated. The known range is restricted to the mainstream rapids of the Ubangi River — a geographically limited type locality — which raises the possibility that the species has a narrow natural distribution, though insufficient survey data exist to confirm whether it also occurs along other reaches of the Ubangi or in adjacent Congo-basin tributaries.
The Ubangi River and the broader Congo basin face pressures from artisanal and commercial fishing, sand extraction, deforestation of riparian zones, and proposals for large-scale hydropower development. Rapids habitats like those where M. ubangipaucispinis was collected are particularly vulnerable to impoundment. Given the species' apparent restriction to a single river type locality and the ecological sensitivity of riverine rapids, a precautionary approach to conservation status would be appropriate when sufficient data become available for a formal IUCN assessment.
