Rhinogobius leavelli, Leavell's goby, is a small, colourful true goby of the family Oxudercidae native to fast-flowing hill streams and rivers across southern China, Laos and northern Vietnam. Like all true gobies, it carries the pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc — the defining character that separates the family from the unrelated sleepers and gudgeons. Gobies are overwhelmingly a marine group, and this East Asian freshwater species is a striking exception: it inhabits clear, well-oxygenated stream water among rocks and cobbles, and in the wild shows a partial amphidromous strategy in which larvae drift to brackish estuaries before migrating back upstream — a life history that makes captive breeding genuinely challenging, though aquarium-born populations increasingly complete their cycle entirely in fresh water.

Taxonomy & naming

Rhinogobius leavelli was first described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Herre in 1935, originally placed in the now-defunct genus Ctenogobius; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the authority for valid fish names — now treats it as Rhinogobius leavelli (Herre, 1935), transferring it to the large East Asian genus Rhinogobius within the family Oxudercidae.

The genus Rhinogobius is one of the most species-rich freshwater goby genera in East Asia, centred on China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan, with outliers extending into Southeast Asia. The Gobioidei have been substantially reshuffled in recent molecular work, with the old family Gobiidae now split across Gobiidae, Gobionellidae and Oxudercidae; all true gobies share the diagnostic fused pelvic disc, unlike the sleepers and gudgeons (Eleotridae) which keep their pelvic fins separate. The type locality for R. leavelli is hill streams around Wúzhōu, Guangxi, southern China.

Morphology

Rhinogobius leavelli is a compact, bottom-oriented fish reaching 2–2.5 in standard length (SL) in typical aquarium specimens, with some wild individuals recorded to around 2.5–3.5 in SL. The body is moderately fusiform with a flattened ventral surface suited to life on rocky stream beds. Ground colour is pale tan to pale grey-brown with darker saddle markings and fine reticulation across the body and head; males develop more intense mottling and often show reddish or orange pigment in the dorsal and caudal fins during courtship.

The most diagnostic feature of the true gobies is clearly visible here: the pelvic fins are fused along the midline to form a concave sucker disc beneath the body, which the fish uses to hold station against current. The first dorsal fin is short and flag-like; the eyes are set high and forward on the head, giving the fish its characteristic alert expression. Sexual dimorphism is present: males tend to be slightly larger and more intensely coloured, with longer unpaired fins, while females are plainer and deeper-bodied when ripe.

Habitat

Rhinogobius leavelli inhabits fast-flowing, clear hill streams and mid-sized rivers. Its documented range spans the Nam Ma and Nam Mat river systems of Laos, the Red River drainage of northern Vietnam, and the Pearl River system of Guangxi, China — a subtropical to warm-temperate region of hills and valleys with strongly seasonal rainfall. The type locality is the hill streams around Wúzhōu in Guangxi.

In these systems the fish occupies shallow riffles and runs over cobble, gravel and rock substrates, taking shelter beneath and between stones. The water is well oxygenated, moderately hard to hard, and typically ranges from about 68–82 °F across seasons, cooling considerably in winter. pH across the range runs approximately 6.0–8.0. This is not a soft-water blackwater species; clear, fast, oxygen-rich flow is the key environmental variable.

Feeding

Rhinogobius leavelli is a micro-predator in the wild, foraging among cobbles and gravel for small aquatic invertebrates: midge and chironomid larvae, mosquito larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and similar benthic prey. It hunts by sight and by picking over the substrate rather than by filter-feeding or algae-grazing.

In the aquarium the species performs best on a varied diet of small live and frozen foods: bloodworms, mosquito larvae, Artemia nauplii and adults, daphnia, and similar items. Like most Rhinogobius, it typically refuses or ignores dry flake and pellet foods, and a diet of flake alone will lead to gradual weight loss and faded colour. Conditioning breeding pairs calls for consistent live and frozen feeds; this is a non-negotiable point of care that distinguishes the species from most cyprinid community fish.

Mating

In the wild, Rhinogobius leavelli is at least partially amphidromous: adults spawn in fresh or lightly brackish stream environments, the adhesive eggs are laid in a cavity or beneath a rock, and the male guards the clutch. After hatching, larvae are thought to drift downstream into brackish estuarine waters where they develop before migrating back upstream as juveniles — the classic amphidromous pattern documented across the genus.

In the aquarium the courtship follows the Rhinogobius pattern: a male establishes a territory around a cave or crevice and defends it actively against rival males, while displaying intensified colour and spread fins to attract females. The male leads a ripe female into the cave and spawning takes place in seclusion, typically lasting two to three days before the female is expelled. Courtship can be vigorous and males are territorial.

Breeding

The breeding biology of Rhinogobius leavelli in the wild is amphidromous: the female lays adhesive eggs on the ceiling or wall of a rocky cave or overhang, and from that point the male takes sole responsibility — guarding the clutch, fanning the eggs with his fins to maintain oxygenation, and chasing intruders away until the eggs hatch.

The critical complication for aquarists is what happens next: in wild populations the newly hatched larvae are carried downstream into brackish estuarine environments where they develop before returning to fresh water. This means that true replication of the full breeding cycle in a freshwater-only aquarium is difficult, and many attempts to raise larvae through to juveniles in standard freshwater setups fail at the larval stage. However, there are reports of aquarium-bred populations that appear to complete their cycle without a marine phase, suggesting some plasticity in the species. Aquarists attempting to breed the fish can experiment with gentle current, near-brackish water changes at the larval stage, and high-quality microfeeds (infusoria, rotifers, copepod nauplii), but success rates are lower than for fully resident freshwater gobies.

In the aquarium

Rhinogobius leavelli is a rewarding but moderately demanding aquarium fish best suited to a species tank or a carefully chosen community of similarly-sized, non-boisterous fishes. A tank of 23.5–31.5 in with good filtration and meaningful flow suits a pair or small group; the fish uses the pelvic sucker to perch on rocks and glass in the current, and a layout of smooth cobbles, slate caves and a sand or fine gravel substrate is ideal. Males are territorial and will squabble, so providing multiple caves and broken sightlines reduces conflict.

Because this is an East Asian subtropical species its temperature requirements are cooler than the tropical default: 68–82 °F is the documented range, and maintaining the lower end in summer — or providing a seasonal drop in winter — is beneficial and may trigger spawning behaviour. The species does not require brackish water in the aquarium, though some keepers add a small amount of marine salt when attempting to raise larvae. It is strictly a freshwater keeper otherwise.

The most important keeper-failure points are diet and cover. Rhinogobius leavelli needs live or frozen meaty foods — it typically refuses dry flake — and it needs caves to feel secure. A tank with open space only and a flake diet will produce a stressed, withdrawn, underfed fish. Cover the tank: like many gobies, this species is an accomplished jumper, and a tight-fitting lid is mandatory.

Conservation

Rhinogobius leavelli was assessed by the IUCN Red List in 2020 and placed in the category Least Concern (LC), reflecting a relatively wide distribution across the Pearl River, Red River and Mekong tributary systems and no evidence of rapid population decline. The species is not currently considered at elevated risk.

Nonetheless, the hill streams it occupies in Guangxi, Laos and northern Vietnam are subject to the familiar pressures of agricultural runoff, dam construction, and small-scale water diversion. The partially amphidromous life history of the wild population means that barriers to fish passage — weirs, dams — could disrupt upstream larval migration and fragment populations over time. Most aquarium fish are wild-collected, since captive breeding through the larval stage is not yet reliable at scale, so sustained trade pressure is worth monitoring. Keepers interested in conservation should seek out aquarium-bred stock where it exists.
