Fundulopanchax rubrolabialis is a small, strikingly patterned killifish from the coastal rainforests of western Cameroon, where it inhabits temporary pools, raphia swamps, and the slow-flowing, overgrown margins of forest brooks. Described formally by Etzel and Sonnenberg in 2008, this genus-member occupies the semi-annual niche characteristic of Fundulopanchax: eggs tolerate an extended incubation in damp peat or substrate, yet the species is not a strict annual and breeds continuously under the right conditions. It is assessed as Endangered by the IUCN, with a restricted range under threat from banana and oil palm plantation expansion, and it remains a scarce fish in both the hobby and scientific collections.

Taxonomy & naming

Fundulopanchax rubrolabialis was described by Volker Etzel and Ralf Sonnenberg in 2008. The valid combination is recorded by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) as Fundulopanchax rubrolabialis Etzel & Sonnenberg, 2008. The authority is not placed in parentheses because the species was originally described in the genus Fundulopanchax and has not been moved.

Fundulopanchax is a West and Central African killifish genus placed within the family Nothobranchiidae (African rivulines). It encompasses both annual and non-annual or semi-annual species, including well-known aquarium fishes such as Fundulopanchax gardneri, the blue lyretail or steel-blue killie. The rubrolabialis group sits among the semi-annual members: populations in habitats that dry seasonally may experience a brief egg-desiccation phase, but the species can also breed continuously in permanently watered conditions.

The specific epithet rubrolabialis is Latin: ruber (red) + labialis (pertaining to the lips), describing the notable red-lipped coloration that distinguishes males of this species from related taxa.

Morphology

Fundulopanchax rubrolabialis is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching approximately 2.5 in in standard length. Like other members of the genus, males are the more colourful sex, displaying iridescent blue-green body scales, red or orange patterning on the flanks and fins, and the distinctive red lips that give the species its name. Females are more cryptically coloured, showing a plainer brown or olive ground colour with reduced markings — typical of the sexual dichromatism found across Fundulopanchax.

The body form is characteristic of a mid-water predator adapted to the still or sluggish waters of forest pools and swampy streams: a rounded head with a subterminal to terminal mouth, moderately large eyes, and posteriorly placed dorsal and anal fins — the latter pair positioned to provide thrust for rapid strikes at invertebrate prey. Finnage in males may be extended or lyre-shaped in some populations, a feature that varies across the genus.

Habitat

The species is native to western Cameroon, where collections have been made from temporary pools, raphia palm swamps, and the swampy, slow-flowing sections of small forest brooks within humid coastal rainforest. FishBase records the type locality environment as seasonal water subject to periodic drawdown, characterised by soft, slightly acidic to neutral water: pH around 7, temperature approximately 70 °F, and hardness around 10 dH. These are tannin-stained, leaf-littered microhabitats in lowland forest, where dense raphia and other marginal vegetation provides shade and cover.

The water is soft because it falls on deep, laterite-rich forest soils with low buffering capacity, and it is typically clear to lightly brown-stained. The seasonally temporary nature of some pools means this fish has evolved eggs that can withstand brief substrate incubation — a characteristic shared with other semi-annual members of the genus. The species is a single-basin or near-single-basin endemic; its range is estimated to extend only a matter of tens of kilometres, making it one of the more geographically restricted members of the genus.

Feeding

Fundulopanchax rubrolabialis is a micropredator. Drawing on the biology documented for closely related genus members such as F. gardneri, the diet in the wild consists primarily of small insects and their aquatic larvae, tiny crustaceans, and other invertebrates encountered at the water surface or in the upper water column. Killifish in this size class are visually oriented ambush or pursuit hunters, taking prey items that move in or just below the surface film.

In the aquarium, the species accepts live and frozen invertebrate foods readily: Drosophila and other small flies, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), Artemia nauplii and adults, Cyclops, and similar meaty items are all appropriate. Dry prepared foods may be accepted by established fish but should not form the dietary staple. Feeding two or three times daily with small, varied offerings maintains colour and condition.

Mating

Fundulopanchax rubrolabialis follows the semi-annual or non-annual reproductive pattern typical of the genus. Males are strongly territorial and display intensely to females, spreading fins and intensifying colour to advertise fitness. Rival males are driven away from spawning sites, and where multiple fish are kept together a clear dominance hierarchy emerges; subdominant males may be persistently harassed.

Courtship is direct and vigorous: the male positions himself alongside or below the female, displaying laterally and nudging her toward the spawning substrate. Spawning embraces follow, typically among fine-leaved plants, roots, Java moss, or peat-fibre spawning mops. A single pair may spawn repeatedly across many sessions rather than in a single mass event. The eggs are adhesive and deposited singly or in small clusters, buried shallowly in the substrate or attached to plant fibres — a strategy that allows them to survive a degree of substrate drying if the water level drops, without requiring the months-long diapause of a true annual.

Breeding

Eggs of Fundulopanchax rubrolabialis can be incubated by two methods reflecting the species' semi-annual biology. In continuously watered setups, spawning mops or peat can be left in the tank and eggs hatch in two to four weeks at water temperature. Alternatively, eggs can be harvested from the spawning medium, stored slightly damp in peat or coco-fibre in a sealed container, and incubated for four to eight weeks before being re-introduced to water — a technique widely used by killifish keepers for genus members whose habitat dries seasonally. Both approaches are documented for Fundulopanchax at the genus level by the American Killifish Association; the appropriate incubation period for rubrolabialis specifically should be trialled since data for this species in captivity are sparse.

Fry hatch at a size sufficient to take newly hatched Artemia nauplii and microworms from the outset. Water should be soft and slightly acidic, temperature around 68–73 °F, with small daily water changes to maintain quality. Growth is relatively rapid; juveniles show colour at several weeks of age, and males begin to spar as they approach maturity. Separating young males before serious aggression develops reduces injury and stress.

In the aquarium

Fundulopanchax rubrolabialis is an uncommon fish in the hobby, though it is kept by specialist killifish keepers and occasionally circulates through killifish association fish rooms and the American Killifish Association (AKA) network. It is not a beginner's fish — not because of any extreme difficulty, but because it demands the attentive care, soft acidic water, and invertebrate-heavy diet that killifish in general require, and because captive stocks are small and best maintained responsibly within keeper networks.

A species aquarium of 10–15 US gal housing one male and two or three females is appropriate. Soft, acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.0, hardness below 10 dH, temperature 68–75 °F) replicates the natal habitat. Tannin from dried Indian almond leaves or peat filtration improves the soft-water profile and darkens the water naturally, eliciting the best colour from males. Dense planting with fine-leaved plants and floating cover encourages spawning and reduces male aggression toward females. The tank must be tightly covered — like all killies, this species can and will jump.

As a single-locality Endangered species with limited captive representation, aquarist breeding efforts contribute meaningfully to the persistence of the fish outside its native range. Keepers who maintain this species are encouraged to register their stocks with the AKA or equivalent national association and to exchange eggs and fish with other breeders to maintain genetic diversity.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Fundulopanchax rubrolabialis as Endangered in 2009, reflecting the species' extremely restricted range in coastal western Cameroon and the accelerating loss of its rainforest habitat. The primary threats identified are sedimentation and chemical pollution from banana plantations, and the expansion of oil palm plantations into the lowland rainforest zone that constitutes the species' entire known range. Both industries result in the conversion of the shaded, leaf-littered, permanent and seasonal pools and swamp brooks that this fish depends on into degraded, open, often turbid or agrochemical-laden water bodies it cannot persist in.

The species is a near-endemic to a small coastal forest block, placing it in the category of killifish most vulnerable to localised land-use change: a single plantation expansion or drainage scheme affecting its core area could eliminate wild populations entirely. No protected-area coverage of the type locality has been specifically confirmed, and as a small, non-commercial fish it receives little targeted management attention. Captive stocks held by killifish hobbyists represent one of the few insurance populations outside Cameroon. The 2009 IUCN assessment has not been updated as of 2026, and the continued pace of forest conversion in this part of Cameroon means the situation on the ground may be more severe than the assessment reflects.
