The Katanga lampeye is a small, shoaling killifish of permanent freshwater habitats across south-central Africa — one of the more widely distributed members of a genus that forms the backbone of the continent's lampeye assemblage. Reaching around 2 in standard length, Lacustricola katangae schools through the marginal vegetation of rivers, swampy floodplains, and shallow lake margins from the Congo Basin south into the Zambezi, Okavango, and Limpopo systems, spanning at least nine countries. It is a non-annual egg-layer of clear or open standing water, not a soil-spawner, and takes its English name from the iridescent blue-green patch above the eye that defines the lampeye tribe. Though lacking a formal IUCN assessment, its broad range and tolerance of permanent-water habitats across arid savanna and well-watered river systems alike suggest the species is not currently at conservation risk.

Taxonomy & naming

Lacustricola katangae was described by the Belgian-British zoologist George Albert Boulenger in 1913, with type material collected from Katanga — the mineral-rich south-eastern province of what is today the Democratic Republic of Congo, then the Belgian Congo. The authority is presented in parentheses because Boulenger placed the species in a different genus from the one it currently occupies; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Lacustricola katangae (Boulenger, 1913).

The genus Lacustricola belongs to the family Aplocheilidae and the tribe Procatopodini — the African lampeyes. Molecular work by Bragança and colleagues (2020, ZooKeys) used DNA barcoding and systematic analysis to confirm L. katangae as a broadly distributed species with haplotypes drawn from the Congo, Upper Zambezi, and Okavango river systems, a distribution unusually large for a lampeye. That same study noted the species inhabits permanent freshwater in arid savanna landscapes, reinforcing its non-annual status.

The specific epithet katangae is a Latinised genitive of Katanga, the region of its type locality, and carries no biological meaning beyond geography. The genus name Lacustricola is Latin: lacus (lake) + -cola (dweller or inhabitant), literally 'lake-dweller' — a reference to the lentic or shallow lake-margin habitats many members of the genus prefer.

Morphology

Lacustricola katangae is a slender, fusiform lampeye reaching approximately 2 in standard length (FishBase). The body plan is characteristic of the procatopodine tribe: a laterally compressed but not deep profile, a terminal or slightly upturned mouth adapted to surface feeding, and relatively large eyes. The defining feature of all lampeyes is the iridescent photophore-like patch above the iris — in this species a blue-green or turquoise gleam that flashes when the fish catches light at the correct angle, and that functions both in species recognition and in coordinating schooling behaviour under low-light conditions.

Colouration in males is subdued but elegant: the flanks carry a silvery to pale golden base overlaid with a faint lateral stripe that gives rise to the common name 'striped topminnow'. The dorsal surface is olive to brownish, and the belly pale. Females are typically plainer and rounder in the abdomen. Sexual dimorphism is mild: males in breeding condition may show more intense iridescence above the eye and slightly more vivid lateral markings, but the species is not strikingly dichromatic. Fin arrangement is typical for the genus — a posteriorly placed dorsal fin set well back above the anal fin, both soft-rayed.

Habitat

Lacustricola katangae occupies permanent freshwater across a large swathe of south-central Africa. FishBase records its distribution across the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, and Namibia, making it one of the most geographically expansive lampeyes in the Procatopodini. Collection records from Malawi include Chikwawa and the Lower Mwanza River (both in the Shire–Zambezi system), where it has been described as fairly to very common in suitable habitat.

The species inhabits the shallow, vegetated margins of small rivers, brooks, swampy backwaters, and the littoral zones of lakes — benthopelagic in its orientation, meaning it moves through the mid-water and near-surface columns rather than being restricted to the bottom. Bragança et al. (2020) note that the species thrives in permanent freshwater set in arid savanna landscapes, a distinction from strictly forest-stream lampeyes. Marginal aquatic vegetation — grasses, reeds, sedges, and overhanging bank plants — is the critical microhabitat, providing shade, refuge from predators, and adhesion sites for the species' spawned eggs.

Water parameters recorded by FishBase for the species span 68–82 °F in temperature and pH 6.5–7.2, consistent with the clear, moderately mineralised waters of the Zambezi and Congo drainages rather than the soft, acidic blackwater of West African forest streams. This is a fish of open, permanent, reasonably well-oxygenated water — not a blackwater specialist and not an annual.

Feeding

Lacustricola katangae is a micro-predator, as is typical for procatopodine lampeyes of its size. In the wild it feeds primarily on small aquatic invertebrates — zooplankton, midge larvae, small crustaceans, and surface-trapped insects — taken at or near the water surface and in the water column among vegetation. The upturned mouth and superior eye placement are adaptations to this surface-skimming mode of feeding.

In the aquarium the species adapts readily to prepared foods provided particle size is appropriate. Live and frozen Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, small bloodworm (Chironomid larvae), and micro-worms are all accepted enthusiastically and support good condition and colouration. Fine-grade dry foods — mini pellets and crushed flake — are also taken once the fish is settled, though a diet with a significant live or frozen component produces the best results. Because of the small maximum size, food items must remain small; anything over roughly 0.5 in will be ignored or rejected.

Mating

Lacustricola katangae is a non-annual lampeye — a continuous, plant-associated egg-layer of permanent water that spawns steadily throughout the year rather than in a concentrated burst tied to seasonal flooding and pond desiccation. There is no diapause, no desiccation-resistant egg stage, and no need to store eggs in peat or soil. The mating system follows the procatopodine pattern: pairs or small groups orient at the surface or among fine-leaved plants, and the male courts the female with lateral displays that prominently exhibit the iridescent eye patch.

Spawning is a brief, close-contact affair. The male positions alongside or slightly beneath the female; at the moment of release the pair press together and one or a small number of adhesive eggs are deposited among plant stems, roots, or filamentous algae. This scatter-spawn-in-vegetation strategy is repeated many times over days and weeks, producing a continuous low-level output of eggs rather than a single large clutch — an adaptation to permanent-water habitats where fry can recruit gradually into an established vegetated littoral zone rather than emerging en masse after a seasonal rain event. The iridescent eye patch is thought to play a role in species recognition and pair synchrony during these repeated, low-intensity spawning events.

Breeding

Under aquarium conditions L. katangae breeds without special conditioning, given a well-planted tank, appropriate feeding, and reasonable water quality. Fine-leaved plants — Java moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri), hornwort (Ceratophyllum), or spawning mops of wool or synthetic fibre — serve as egg deposition sites. Adults do not actively guard eggs but also do not engage in systematic egg predation in a well-planted setup; removal of eggs to a separate rearing container nonetheless improves yield.

Eggs hatch in approximately 10–14 days at 75–79 °F, producing larvae of around 0.5 in. Fry are small but not exceptionally delicate by killifish standards: they accept Paramecium or commercial infusoria cultures initially, graduating to Artemia nauplii within a week or two of hatching. Growth is steady, and juveniles reach sexual maturity at several months of age. Because spawning is continuous rather than seasonal, a colony in good condition will produce fry on an ongoing basis, making the species straightforward to maintain in numbers for those who want to keep a proper school.

In the aquarium

The Katanga lampeye is best kept as a school — a minimum of six to eight individuals allows the social dynamic of the species to express itself and reduces individual stress. At 2 in maximum length it suits aquariums of 15 US gal upward. It is a peaceful, mid-to-surface level species that coexists well with small, non-aggressive fish of similar size; it should not be kept with anything large enough to eat it.

Water conditions in the range of 72–81 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, and moderate hardness match the parameters recorded from its native Zambezi and Congo habitats. The species does not require the very soft, acidic conditions demanded by many West African forest killifish, making it somewhat more straightforward to maintain for hobbyists on moderately hard tap water. Efficient filtration is important — clean, well-oxygenated water suits this open-water permanent-water fish — but flow rates should be gentle to moderate, not the strong currents preferred by stream-adapted species. A tight-fitting cover is advisable as lampeyes are capable of jumping.

The iridescent eye patch is the display centrepiece: under directional lighting the blue-green flash is visible across the tank and is particularly active during social interactions among males. Planted tanks with open swimming lanes and darker backgrounds show the species to best advantage. Though the Katanga lampeye is not among the most commonly traded killifish in the hobby, it is maintained by killifish specialist societies and is available through specialist breeders; the American Killifish Association network is the most reliable source in North America.

Conservation

Lacustricola katangae has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; the genus Lacustricola as a whole is under-represented in formal conservation evaluations, and the species carries no Red List category at present. Based on available evidence — a distribution spanning at least nine countries, confirmed presence in multiple major river systems (Congo, Zambezi, Okavango, Limpopo), and records of locally common populations in Malawi — the species does not appear to be at immediate conservation risk.

Nonetheless, the habitats it depends upon — shallow vegetated margins of rivers and swamps in south-central Africa — are under pressure across much of its range. Wetland drainage for agriculture, abstraction of water from river systems in arid regions such as Botswana and Namibia, and degradation of marginal vegetation through livestock grazing and bank clearance all reduce the quality and extent of lampeye habitat. The species' association with permanent water in arid savanna landscapes means that any reduction in permanent flows — through drought amplified by climate change or through water extraction — would directly reduce available habitat. A formal IUCN assessment covering L. katangae and related Lacustricola species would provide a firmer basis for conservation planning across the group.
