Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis faridpaki was formally described in 2011 by Hamed Mousavi-Sabet, Argyro Vasil'eva, Mansour Vatandoust and Alexander Vasil'ev in the Journal of Ichthyology, based on a holotype and paratype series collected from the Siahrud River near 36°26'N, 52°57'E in Mazandaran Province, Iran. The species epithet honours Farhad Faridpak, an Iranian ichthyologist. The describers separated it from the superficially similar, sympatric Cobitis keyvani on the basis of fine-scale morphological differences — among them a single lamina circularis (Canestrini's lamina) on the second pectoral-fin ray of males, and the arrangement and focal zone of the subdorsal scales.
It sits in the genus Cobitis, the type genus of family Cobitidae — the spined loaches that give the whole family its common name. The Catalog of Fishes (CAS), the standing authority for valid fish names, recognises Cobitis faridpaki as a valid species. A follow-up morphometric study comparing landmark-based body shape between C. keyvani and C. faridpaki confirmed the split and reported a new locality record for C. faridpaki within the southern Caspian basin, reinforcing that the two are genuinely distinct, narrowly distributed species rather than one variable population.
Morphology
Cobitis faridpaki is a small, elongate, laterally compressed loach typical of its genus: a slender body tapering to a narrow caudal peduncle, a low-slung underslung mouth ringed with barbels for probing sand, and small eyes set high on the head. Like every member of Cobitidae it carries an erectile suborbital spine — a sharp, forked spine hidden in a groove beneath the eye that flicks out when the fish is handled or threatened, the anatomical feature that gives the spined loaches their name. The original description places the holotype at 2 in standard length and paratypes between 54.7 and 2.5 in SL, with a reported maximum total length of about 3.5 in — a genuinely small fish even by loach standards.
The body carries small, deeply embedded scales rather than large plate-like ones, leaving the skin close to naked — a trait shared across the family that makes these fish particularly sensitive to harsh water conditions and medications. Males of the species show a single lamina circularis on the second branched pectoral-fin ray, a microscopic diagnostic feature used to separate this species from its close relative C. keyvani rather than something visible to a keeper at a glance.
Habitat
Cobitis faridpaki is known only from the southern Caspian Sea basin of northern Iran, with its type locality in the Siahrud River, Mazandaran Province, and at least one additional habitat record reported from the same drainage system. This is a temperate part of the world: rivers draining the northern slopes of the Alborz Mountains toward the Caspian Sea run clear and cool to moderately warm, over beds of sand and fine gravel, quite unlike the warm tropical rivers most aquarium loaches come from.
As a benthopelagic species it spends its time on or just above the riverbed, favouring stretches with a soft, sandy or fine-gravel substrate it can bury into and sift for food, generally in slower-flowing sections with some vegetation cover rather than raging hillstream torrents. This is a temperate, coolwater species, not a tropical one — its biology and known spawning temperatures line up with its European congener Cobitis taenia rather than with warm-water Southeast Asian loaches.
Feeding
As a typical Cobitis, C. faridpaki is a benthic, sand-sifting omnivore. It forages by burrowing into and sifting through soft substrate, picking out worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans and molluscs, along with a share of organic detritus. Its barbels and underslung mouth are built for exactly this kind of close-substrate foraging rather than picking food from the water column.
No aquarium-specific feeding data exists for this particular species in the available literature, but its biology follows the family pattern closely enough to be confident: it needs a soft, fine sand bed to express natural sifting behaviour, and would be expected to take small live and frozen foods (bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp) along with sinking pellets or wafers formulated for bottom feeders, offered after dark or in shaded areas since these fish tend toward crepuscular and nocturnal activity.
Mating
Specific courtship behaviour has not been documented for Cobitis faridpaki, but data from the original description and subsequent spawning-ecology work on the genus give a size and season for reproduction. Females mature at total lengths above roughly 2 in and males above roughly 1.5 in. Spawning activity in this species has been recorded from May into late July, with water temperatures between about 19.1 and 76 °F — a distinctly temperate spawning window, well below the warm tropical ranges typical of egg-scattering loaches from Southeast Asia.
As in other Cobitis, sexes are difficult to distinguish outside the breeding season by simple external inspection; the reliable diagnostic characters used by taxonomists (the lamina circularis on the male pectoral fin, subtle scale patterning) require close examination rather than a glance across the tank.
Breeding
Cobitis faridpaki is an egg-scattering species with no parental care, consistent with the wider Cobitidae. Ripe adults release adhesive eggs among dense vegetation over sand or mud substrates, typically in spring through early summer; the eggs stick to plants and are left to develop unguarded. Recorded spawning for this species falls between May and late July at 66–76 °F, matching the temperate spawning ecology documented across the genus Cobitis.
This puts C. faridpaki among the minority of loaches that have actually been observed spawning: several temperate Cobitidae — European species of Cobitis, Sabanejewia, and the dojo/weather loach Misgurnus — have been recorded or even induced to spawn in ponds and unheated tanks, unlike the tropical Cobitidae (Acantopsis, Lepidocephalichthys) or the botiids, which are essentially never bred by hobbyists. No published account of deliberate aquarium breeding of C. faridpaki itself is available, so it should be treated as a species with a documented wild spawning season rather than an established aquarium-breeding project.
In the aquarium
Cobitis faridpaki is not established in the aquarium trade and essentially no keeper-reported husbandry exists for it. What can be said comes from its biology and its close relatives: this is a small, coolwater sand-sifter that would need a fine, soft substrate to burrow and forage naturally, moderate to cool temperatures reflecting its spawning range of roughly 66–77 °F rather than a heated tropical setup, and — like all spined loaches — gentle handling and cautious medication, since its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of many standard fish medicines.
As a genuinely obscure species with a type locality restricted to a single Iranian river system, anyone encountering it in the trade should assume it is either misidentified, mislabelled as a more common congener such as C. keyvani or C. taenia, or a genuinely rare specialist import — not a routine community fish. It is best regarded, for now, as a species for the record rather than for the shopping list.
Conservation
Cobitis faridpaki has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so it carries no formal conservation status. Its known range is narrow — the southern Caspian Sea basin of Mazandaran Province, Iran, centred on the Siahrud River — the kind of restricted, single-drainage distribution that in related Caspian and Anatolian spined loaches has often translated to genuine vulnerability once assessed.
No population trend or specific threat data has been published for this species. Given how many small-range Cobitis and Sabanejewia species in the Caspian and Black Sea basins face pressure from damming, water abstraction and pollution, a precautionary approach to its habitat is warranted even in the absence of a formal assessment. There is no evidence this species is targeted by the aquarium trade.
