Cobitis saniae is a small, temperate spined loach described in 2017 from the southern Caspian Sea basin of Iran, one of a wave of new Cobitis species split out as the genus's Caucasian and Anatolian populations were re-examined with morphology and DNA. It is a coldwater fish of slow rivers and streams, not a tropical aquarium subject, and it is essentially unknown in the hobby — everything about it traces back to the taxonomic and cytogenetic literature that named and mapped it rather than to aquarium experience.

Taxonomy & naming

Cobitis saniae was described in 2017 by Eagderi, Jouladeh-Roudbar, Jalili, Sayyadzadeh and Esmaeili as part of a taxonomic revision of the genus Cobitis in the southern Caspian Sea basin of Iran, which used both morphological characters and molecular (COI) data to separate several previously conflated spined-loach populations. The type locality lies in a tributary of the Mahabad River in the Urmia Lake basin. A subsequent cytogenetic and morphological study of Caucasian Cobitis (Vasileva & Vasilev, 2020, Journal of Ichthyology) documented the species' karyotype and diagnostic characters from museum voucher material, including populations found in sympatry with the related Cobitis derzhavini in the Agstafa River.

It belongs to the family Cobitidae, the true or spined loaches, and sits within a genus, Cobitis, that has been repeatedly reshuffled as DNA work resolves what had long been treated as one or two widespread, variable species into many geographically narrow ones. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the current valid combination, Cobitis saniae; readers encountering older Iranian or Caucasian material under a broader "Cobitis taenia" or unspecified Cobitis sp. label may be looking at populations later assigned to this species.

Morphology

As a member of Cobitidae, Cobitis saniae carries the family's diagnostic erectile suborbital spine — a small, hinged spine folded into a groove beneath each eye that the fish can flick out, most often as a defensive response when handled. Like other true loaches its body is slender and only lightly armored, with tiny, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin functionally naked — a detail that matters for husbandry and disease treatment far more than for everyday appearance.

Detailed size data for this species specifically was not found in the available literature; congeners in the genus Cobitis are typically small, on the order of 2–4 in standard length, and C. saniae is presumed to fall in that range pending a dedicated measurement in the primary description. Vasileva & Vasilev's cytogenetic work found a karyotype of 6 metacentric and 14 submetacentric chromosome pairs, alongside the morphological diagnostic characters used to separate it from sympatric and neighbouring Cobitis species.

Habitat

Cobitis saniae is native to the southern Caspian Sea basin of Iran, with a range that extends into the Urmia Lake basin (type locality: a tributary of the Mahabad River), the transboundary Kura-Aras river system shared by Iran, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia and Turkey, the Rioni River of Georgia's Black Sea basin, and the Zarineh River. This is Eurasian temperate freshwater, not a tropical Asian or African system, and it places the species firmly among the cold-winter rivers of the Caucasus and northern Iranian plateau.

Genus-level habitat data for Cobitis describes slow-flowing rivers, streams, lakes and ponds with fine sandy or silty bottoms and patchy vegetation — water the fish is benthopelagic in, spending most of its time close to or buried in the substrate. C. saniae is presumed to follow this pattern as a typical member of the genus. Critically, this is a temperate, coldwater fish: its native range experiences real winters, and it is not adapted to the warm, stable conditions of a typical tropical community tank.

Feeding

No feeding data specific to Cobitis saniae was found in the available sources. Based on the well-documented habits of the genus, it is inferred to be a benthic, largely nocturnal forager that sifts fine sand and silt for small invertebrates, detritus and microorganisms — the same sand-sifting strategy used across Cobitidae, in which the fish takes in mouthfuls of substrate and expels the inedible fraction through the gills while retaining prey items.

A soft, fine substrate is therefore likely essential to how this species would feed naturally, whether in the wild or in any future captive setting; a hard or coarse-gravel bottom would deny it the sifting behaviour its mouth and barbels are built for. Data here is inferred from genus-level biology rather than direct observation of C. saniae, and should be treated accordingly.

Mating

No species-specific breeding observations for Cobitis saniae were found in the literature reviewed. As a member of the temperate genus Cobitis, it is presumed to follow the pattern documented in close congeners such as Cobitis taenia: spawning triggered by rising water temperature and day length in spring, typically April to June in the wild, following a period of cold winter conditions that the fish needs to complete its reproductive cycle.

There is no reliable information on external sexual dimorphism in this species. In related Cobitis, gravid females are typically somewhat deeper-bodied when in spawning condition, but no dedicated study of sexual differences in C. saniae was located, so this is noted as data-sparse rather than asserted as fact.

Breeding

Cobitis saniae has, as far as available sources indicate, never been bred in the aquarium — it is a recently described (2017), narrowly distributed species from a specific stretch of the Caspian/Caucasus region that has essentially no presence in the hobby. What can be said comes from genus-level biology: spined loaches (Cobitis) are egg-scatterers with no parental care, releasing adhesive eggs among dense aquatic vegetation once triggered into spawning condition, typically in spring after a period of cooler water.

Several temperate Cobitidae — other Cobitis species, Sabanejewia, and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus — have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers precisely because their coldwater biology tolerates or requires a seasonal temperature cycle achievable in an unheated setup, unlike the tropical Cobitidae such as the horseface loach Acantopsis or Lepidocephalichthys, which generally have not been bred at home. Whether C. saniae specifically could be spawned this way is untested; the honest statement is that it is not a fish anyone has documented breeding in captivity.

In the aquarium

Cobitis saniae is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — it was described in 2017 from a narrow stretch of the Iranian and Caucasian Caspian basin and does not appear to be traded or kept. Anything said here is inference from its genus and family rather than direct keeping experience, and should be read with that caveat.

Were it ever kept, its coldwater biology would rule out a standard heated tropical setup: like other temperate Cobitis it would need cool, well-oxygenated water rather than warm still water, plus a soft sand substrate to sift and patchy planting for cover. Like all Cobitidae it is functionally near-scaleless, which in related, actually-kept loaches translates to sensitivity to copper and to full-strength medications — a relevant caution for anyone who might one day work with wild-collected Caucasian Cobitis material. For now, this is a species best appreciated through the taxonomic and cytogenetic literature that defined it, not through the aquarium.

Conservation

Cobitis saniae has not been evaluated on the IUCN Red List, so no conservation category applies; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. As a species described only in 2017 from a specific set of river systems in the Caspian and Kura-Aras basins, it has not yet received the dedicated assessment that some longer-known, more range-restricted European and Anatolian Cobitis species have.

Broader pressures on Caspian-basin and Caucasian freshwater systems — damming, water abstraction for agriculture, pollution and habitat modification — are documented threats to spined loaches generally in this region, and several European and Anatolian Cobitis species are already listed as threatened for these reasons. There is no evidence of aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species; it does not appear to be part of the ornamental trade.
