Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis keyvani was described in 2012 by Hamid Reza Mousavi-Sabet, Sevan Yerli, Asghar Vatandoust, Salar Özeren and colleagues as a new species of spined loach from the Talar River and Keselian stream, tributaries feeding the southern Caspian Sea basin in Mazandaran province, Iran. The authors diagnosed it from the similar Cobitis linea by a detail of the male pectoral fin — the presence of a single lamina circularis at the base of the second ray.
The name did not stand for long as an independent species. A companion population from the same region had already been described the year before as Cobitis faridpaki (Mousavi-Sabet et al., 2011), and in 2017 Jouladeh-Roudbar and colleagues compared mitochondrial COI sequence data from the type localities of both nominal species and found them to be essentially the same lineage. Cobitis keyvani is therefore treated as a junior synonym of Cobitis faridpaki. We record it here under its original name, keyvani, since that is the binomial the source record is filed under, while noting plainly that current taxonomic opinion folds it into C. faridpaki. Both names sit within the genus Cobitis, the spined loaches, in the family Cobitidae — the true loaches that carry the erectile suborbital spine the family is named for.
Morphology
Cobitis keyvani is a small, slender, cylindrical loach, reaching only around 3.5 in in total length — modest even by the standards of this genus. Like every member of Cobitidae it carries the family's signature feature: an erectile spine hidden in a groove beneath each eye, which the fish can flick out defensively when handled or threatened. Its scales are tiny and deeply embedded, leaving the skin functionally naked — a trait shared across the true loaches that makes them unusually sensitive to medication.
The species was distinguished from its close relative Cobitis linea on a fine anatomical character in the male pectoral fin (a single lamina circularis at the base of the second ray), the kind of detail that separates otherwise very similar-looking Caspian-basin spined loaches. As a small, elongate, sand-coloured fish built for burrowing rather than open swimming, it fits the classic Cobitis body plan: a fish built to disappear into a soft riverbed rather than to be seen.
Habitat
This is a cold-temperate species, not a tropical one. Cobitis keyvani is known from the Talar River and the Keselian stream, both tributaries draining the northern, Caspian-facing slope of Iran's Alborz Mountains in Mazandaran province. FishBase describes its habitat as clear, calm streams with a sandy to slightly rocky bottom — exactly the kind of soft-bedded, well-oxygenated running water that spined loaches specialise in.
It is markedly nocturnal: by day it buries itself in sand, mud, or dense weed beds and emerges to forage at night. That burrowing habit, combined with a preference for cool, temperate stream conditions, sets it apart from the warm, soft, blackwater rivers of Southeast Asia that many aquarium loaches call home. Any tank meant to house a fish like this would need to stay well short of tropical temperatures, with a soft sand substrate for it to disappear into during the day.
Feeding
Detailed dietary data for Cobitis keyvani specifically is sparse in the available literature, but its biology fits the pattern typical of small Cobitis: a sand-sifting benthic omnivore. Foraging mainly at night, it almost certainly takes small invertebrates — worm and insect larvae, small crustaceans — sifted from the sand and mud of its stream bed, along with some organic detritus.
A soft, fine substrate is not a cosmetic choice for a fish like this but a functional need: it is how the fish both hides during the day and finds its food after dark. Any diet offered would need to reach the fish at the bottom, since it neither competes at the surface nor forages far from cover in daylight.
Mating
Direct breeding data for Cobitis keyvani has not been separately published, but a detailed reproductive study exists for its closely related synonym, Cobitis faridpaki, examining a tributary of the Gorganroud River in northern Iran across a full breeding season (February to July, with 403 specimens sampled). That study found the spawning period fell in spring and early summer — roughly April to June — with females making up a slight majority of the population (52.2% versus 47.8% males) and a perceptible dominance of females during the pre-spawning and spawning windows.
Given the two nominal species are now regarded as the same lineage from the same river system, this seasonal, spring-triggered spawning pattern is the best available picture for Cobitis keyvani as well: a temperate spined loach whose reproduction is cued to the region's rising spring temperatures and flows, not a year-round or aquarium-triggered event.
Breeding
Cobitis keyvani is not known to be bred in home aquaria — it is not established in the hobby at all, and no aquarium-spawning accounts exist in the sources available here. What can be said comes from its temperate Cobitis biology and the reproductive study of its synonym C. faridpaki: it is an egg-scatterer with no parental care, spawning adhesive eggs in spring as water temperatures rise, in the manner typical of the family's temperate members (a pattern also seen in European Cobitis species and the dojo loach, Misgurnus).
Unlike the tropical Cobitidae — the horseface loach Acantopsis or the kuhlis of the genus Lepidocephalichthys — several temperate spined loaches have been pond- or tank-spawned by researchers and specialist keepers under cool, seasonally-cycled conditions. There is no indication, however, that this has been achieved for Cobitis keyvani/faridpaki outside a research setting; for practical purposes it should be treated as a species that is essentially never bred by hobbyists.
In the aquarium
Cobitis keyvani has no real presence in the aquarium trade, and nothing in the available sources suggests it is kept or traded as an ornamental fish. It is included here as a taxonomically documented member of the spined-loach fauna of Iran's Caspian basin, not as a species with an established care history.
Were it ever kept, its biology points clearly to the requirements: this is a cool-temperate, not tropical, species, and it should never be treated as a warm-water community fish. It would need a soft sand substrate to burrow into, clean well-oxygenated water reflecting its clear stream habitat, and — like every true loach — careful, reduced-strength medication, since its near-scaleless skin makes it, and the whole family, unusually sensitive to copper and full-strength treatments.
Conservation
Cobitis keyvani has not been evaluated on the IUCN Red List, so it carries no conservation category here — we record it as Not Evaluated rather than guess at a status. Its taxonomic fate complicates any future assessment further: because it is now treated as a junior synonym of Cobitis faridpaki, a conservation review would likely need to address the two names as a single population.
What is known points to a narrow-range endemic: the species is documented only from the Talar River and Keselian stream in Mazandaran province, a limited area of the southern Caspian basin. Small-range stream endemics of this kind are typically the most exposed to localised pressures — water abstraction, pollution and habitat alteration in a single river system — even where no formal assessment yet exists to quantify the risk.
