Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis magnostriata was described by Nakajima in 2012 in a taxonomic revision (published in Zootaxa 3586) that untangled the Cobitis striata species complex, a group of superficially similar Japanese spined loaches that had long been confused with one another. In the same paper Nakajima also described Cobitis kaibarai and Cobitis minamorii as separate species, splitting out lineages that differ in pelvic myotome count, the shape of the lamina circularis, the pattern of black spots at the base of the tail, overall body shape and egg diameter — the kind of fine anatomical detail typical of Cobitis taxonomy, where many species look nearly identical externally.
The species sits in the genus Cobitis, family Cobitidae — the true spined loaches — and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists it under this genus and authority. The specific epithet magnostriata combines Latin magnus ("great, large") with striata ("striped"), referencing the species' large body size and striation pattern relative to its closest relatives in the striata complex.
Morphology
As a member of Cobitidae, Cobitis magnostriata carries the family's diagnostic feature: an erectile suborbital spine, a small bony spine folded into a groove beneath each eye that can be flicked out defensively. Its skin is effectively naked, covered only in tiny, deeply embedded scales rather than the overlapping scales of most fish — a trait shared across the family and one that matters directly for how the species should be medicated.
FishBase records a modest adult size with clear sexual size difference: males reach around 3 in standard length, while females grow noticeably larger, to about 4.5 in standard length. The body shape, black spotting at the caudal-fin base, and striation pattern are the features used to separate this species from its close relatives in the former C. striata complex, though such distinctions are subtle and best left to specialists rather than casual identification.
Habitat
Cobitis magnostriata is a temperate, coldwater species, not a tropical one. Sources place it in the Lake Prespa region spanning Greece, Albania and North Macedonia, with the original description associating the striata-complex revision with Japanese populations as well — reflecting the genuinely unsettled, still-being-revised state of Cobitis taxonomy in this species group. What is consistent across the record is that this is a temperate freshwater fish of streams and lake margins, not a warm tropical river species.
Like other Cobitis, it is a benthic, sand-associated species, living over soft substrate where it can bury and sift for food. Cobitis in general tolerate a broad temperature range, roughly 41–86 °F, reflecting a life cycle built around cold winters and warm but not hot summers — the opposite thermal profile from the tropical botiid and hillstream loaches kept widely in the hobby.
Feeding
Cobitis magnostriata is a sand-sifting benthic omnivore. It forages nocturnally over a soft substrate, taking small invertebrates such as chironomid (bloodworm-type) larvae, Tubifex worms, small crustaceans and other insect larvae, along with detritus sifted from the sand. This sifting behavior is characteristic of the genus and requires a soft bed to express naturally — a fish kept over gravel or bare glass cannot feed the way it would in the wild.
No aquarium-specific feeding data exists for this species given its near-total absence from the hobby, but the genus-wide pattern for Cobitis is a reliable guide: readily takes sinking foods, favors worm-type live and frozen fare, and benefits from feeding after dark given its nocturnal foraging habit.
Mating
No species-specific courtship description was found in the sources reviewed for Cobitis magnostriata. One study (Springer Nature, 2022) documents reproductive behavior observed in the field for this species, describing egg-scattering spawning with male-tracking and wrapping behavior around the female, and multiple spawning events per season — consistent with the broader Cobitis pattern of temperate, seasonally-triggered spawning rather than any form of parental care or mouthbrooding.
Data on this species is otherwise sparse, and the field study underlying what is known was conducted specifically because the wild population is small and endangered, in the Lake Prespa system. There is no record of this species being bred or even reliably kept in home aquaria.
Breeding
Cobitis magnostriata is an egg-scatterer with no parental care, spawning among plants or over the substrate in spring, in keeping with the pattern documented for temperate spined loaches generally. Several other temperate Cobitidae — other Cobitis species, Sabanejewia, and the dojo/weather loach Misgurnus — have been successfully pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers, unlike their tropical Cobitidae relatives such as the horseface loach Acantopsis or Lepidocephalichthys, which generally have not.
For Cobitis magnostriata specifically, however, the honest picture is that it is essentially unrecorded in the aquarium hobby. The only documented spawning behavior comes from field observation of the wild, Endangered Lake Prespa population, not from captive breeding. There is no evidence this species has been bred in a home aquarium, and given its conservation status and near-absence from the trade, that is unlikely to change soon.
In the aquarium
Cobitis magnostriata is not established in the aquarium trade, and there is no meaningful care record to draw on for this species specifically. What can be said comes from the genus and family: as a Cobitis, it would need cool, unheated-to-mild water rather than tropical temperatures, a deep soft sand substrate for its natural sifting and burrowing behavior, and hiding places such as stones or roots.
As with every Cobitidae, its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper and to full-strength doses of many medications — half-doses and gentle treatments are the rule for the family, and scaleless loaches are often among the first fish in a tank to show signs of ich. Given its Endangered status and its essential absence from commercial supply, this is not a species a prospective keeper is likely to encounter, and any specimens that do surface should be treated with particular caution given the fragility of the wild population.
Conservation
Cobitis magnostriata is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List (assessment 2022.2). The species is tied to a narrow endemic range in the Lake Prespa system spanning Greece, Albania and North Macedonia, a transboundary lake basin under pressure from water abstraction, pollution and habitat alteration — the kind of localized threats that put small-range lake-endemic fish at outsized risk.
This is one of several Japanese and Eurasian Cobitis species described or redescribed in the 2012 striata-complex revision, a pattern that recurs across the genus: many narrowly-distributed Cobitis populations, once lumped together as a single wide-ranging species, turn out on closer taxonomic study to be distinct, range-restricted forms — and correspondingly more vulnerable than their old, broader "species" designation suggested. There is no evidence of aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species; its conservation concerns are habitat-driven, not trade-driven.
