Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis poecilopleura was described by Chu in 1931. The Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — currently treats it as a junior synonym of Cobitis meridionalis Karaman, 1924, the Prespa spined loach, a species restricted to Lake Prespa and its immediate drainage. The genus Cobitis is the type genus of the family Cobitidae, the true or spined loaches, and remains one of the more taxonomically stable Cobitoidea genera even as neighbouring groups (the old Botia, Nemacheilus and Acanthophthalmus assemblages) have been repeatedly split.
Because the valid-name question sits with Cobitis meridionalis, records under the name Cobitis poecilopleura should be read as referring to that same Lake Prespa population. The species remains poorly studied outside its type locality, and no separate common name is established for it in English-language sources.
Morphology
This is a small, elongated loach: FishBase gives a maximum size of about 3 in standard length in males and 4.5 in standard length in females, a female-larger pattern typical of the genus. The body carries the mottled, blotched pigmentation typical of Cobitis — grey to olive ground colour broken by dark blotches along the flanks, which is the basis of the epithet poecilopleura.
