Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis squataeniatus was described by Ngô Sy Van in 2008 as part of a wider revision of the spined loaches of the Balkan Peninsula, a group that has turned out to hold far more distinct species than older, broader treatments recognised. It sits in the genus Cobitis within the family Cobitidae, the true spined loaches, alongside a cluster of other narrow-range Prespa and Balkan endemics such as Cobitis meridionalis. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid combination, and it is currently accepted as Cobitis squataeniatus, though the original spelling was emended from "squataeniatus" to the feminine-agreeing "squataeniata" to match the grammatical gender of Cobitis under the rules of zoological nomenclature; both forms can be found in the literature.
The species epithet is built from Middle English "squa-" (square) plus "taeniata" (banded), describing the square or rectangular dark blotches that run along its flanks — a naming pattern typical of the genus, where fine differences in blotch shape, size and arrangement are often what separate one narrow-range Cobitis species from its neighbours.
Morphology
Cobitis squataeniatus is a small, elongated, laterally compressed loach with the grey-olive ground colour and the row of square to rectangular dark blotches along the flanks that give it its name. Like other Cobitis it carries two laminae circularis — bony structures at the base of the pectoral fin used to distinguish this genus from close relatives — along with the small erectile spine beneath the eye that is diagnostic of the family Cobitidae as a whole, the "spined loach" spine after which the group is named.
It shows marked sexual size dimorphism typical of the genus: males reach only around 3 in SL, while females grow substantially larger, to about 4.5 in SL. As in other spined loaches, the body is covered in tiny, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin functionally naked — a detail that matters for both disease resistance and medication tolerance in the aquarium.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the Prespa Lake system, a high-altitude Balkan lake basin shared by Greece, Albania and North Macedonia, and one of the oldest and most biodiverse lake systems in Europe. It lives in freshwater, benthopelagic habitat over soft substrate, where it can bury and forage largely out of sight of predators. The Prespa basin sits in a subtropical-to-temperate climate zone with cold winters, and the lake's spined loach fauna — including this species and its close relative Cobitis meridionalis — is textbook temperate, not tropical.
As in congeners such as the widespread Cobitis taenia, which is known to live comfortably at 57–64 °F in the wild, Cobitis squataeniatus is a coldwater fish adapted to a cool, seasonal lake environment rather than a warm tropical stream. There is no indication in the available literature of any tolerance for warm, tropical aquarium conditions; the genus as a whole does not need supplemental heating in temperate climates.
Feeding
As a benthic, sand- and mud-associated loach, Cobitis squataeniatus is presumed to follow the diet typical of the genus: a sifting benthic omnivore that works soft sediment for small invertebrates such as worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans and other tiny prey, along with detritus. Detailed dietary data specific to this species has not been published, so this picture is extrapolated from the well-studied feeding ecology of its congeners rather than from direct study of C. squataeniatus itself.
In a keeping context, a soft, fine substrate would be essential to let a fish like this express its natural sifting and burrowing behaviour and locate food the way it would in the wild — a bare-bottomed or coarse-gravel setup would deny it the core of how it forages.
Mating
No species-specific spawning behaviour has been documented for Cobitis squataeniatus in the sources available. Sexual size dimorphism is pronounced, with females growing considerably larger than males (to about 4.5 in SL versus 3 in SL) — a difference plausibly tied to egg-carrying capacity, as in other temperate Cobitis, though this has not been directly confirmed for this species.
By analogy with well-studied temperate relatives such as Cobitis taenia, spawning in this genus is generally a spring event triggered by rising water temperatures, with no courtship display or pair bond beyond the act of spawning itself. Specific triggers, timing and site fidelity for the Prespa population of C. squataeniatus have not been documented.
Breeding
Cobitis squataeniatus is an egg-scattering species with no parental care, in keeping with the genus Cobitis as a whole: ripe adults release adhesive eggs among vegetation, typically in spring, and the eggs and larvae are left to develop unguarded. Several temperate spined and pond loaches — including various Cobitis species, Sabanejewia, and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus — have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers taking advantage of their coldwater, seasonal biology, unlike the tropical Cobitidae such as Acantopsis and Lepidocephalichthys, which generally have not.
There is no record in the available sources of Cobitis squataeniatus specifically having been bred in captivity, whether in a research or hobby setting. Given how narrowly endemic and poorly studied this species is, and that it is not established in the aquarium trade, breeding in captivity should be treated as undocumented rather than assumed to follow the pattern of its better-known temperate relatives.

Cobitis squataeniatus is not an aquarium fish in any meaningful sense — it does not appear in the trade, and the available sources are limited to taxonomic and conservation literature rather than hobbyist care reports. Any discussion of husbandry is necessarily inferred from the wider genus rather than from direct experience with this species.
Were it ever to be kept, the working assumptions from Cobitis and other temperate spined loaches would apply: unheated or lightly heated coldwater conditions matching its cool Balkan lake habitat, a soft sand substrate for burrowing and sifting, and the general caution that spined loaches, being near-scaleless, are sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments and should be dosed cautiously if disease treatment is ever needed. As a narrow-range lake endemic of conservation concern, there is also a strong argument that this species has no business being collected for the trade at all.
Conservation
Cobitis squataeniatus is currently listed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List (2022 assessment), meaning there is not enough information on its population size, trend or the scale of threats it faces to assign it a proper threat category. This is a common situation for narrow-range Balkan lake endemics, where survey effort has historically been limited relative to the diversity of cryptic Cobitis lineages the region holds.
Being restricted to the Prespa Lake system alone — a basin shared across three countries and subject to well-documented pressures including water abstraction, eutrophication and fluctuating lake levels — this species should be considered inherently vulnerable to habitat change even without a formal threat listing. Its narrow endemism, shared by its close relative Cobitis meridionalis in the same lake system, underlines how much basic monitoring work remains to be done on the Balkans' spined loach fauna before their true conservation status can be known.
