Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis meridionalis was described by the Yugoslav ichthyologist Stanko Karaman in 1924, originally as a variety of the widespread Cobitis taenia — the type spined loach of Europe. For decades it was treated as a subspecies or synonym of C. taenia, a common fate for the many local Cobitis populations scattered across the lakes and rivers of the Balkans, a group notorious for its taxonomic complexity and polyploid populations. Economidis & Nalbant (1996) and Kottelat (1997) reassessed the Lake Prespa population and elevated it to full species status as Cobitis meridionalis, a treatment that has held through the Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — to the present.
The type locality is Lake Prespa and its tributaries in the Republic of Macedonia (now North Macedonia). It remains in the genus Cobitis, the spined loaches, within the family Cobitidae — the true loaches, named for the sharp, erectile spine set in a groove beneath the eye of every member of the family.
Morphology
Like other members of its genus, Cobitis meridionalis is a slender, elongated loach with a flattened belly suited to life on the lake bed, small barbels around the mouth for probing sediment, and the erectile suborbital spine characteristic of Cobitidae, which the fish can flick out in self-defence. Its skin bears the fine, deeply embedded scales typical of the family rather than large exposed ones, leaving it — like its relatives — sensitive to poor water quality and to full-strength medications.
FishBase records a modest maximum size, with males and unsexed individuals reaching about 3 in standard length and females, which run larger as in most Cobitis, reaching around 4.5 in standard length. This is a small, unassuming fish rather than a showy one, coloured and patterned along the same cryptic, mottled lines as its wider genus, which helps it blend into the sand and silt of the lake floor.
Habitat
This species is a freshwater lake endemic, known only from Lake Prespa and its associated tributaries on the shared borders of Albania, Greece and North Macedonia. Prespa is a high-altitude Balkan lake with a benthopelagic fish community, and C. meridionalis is one of nine fish species endemic to the lake system — a remarkable concentration of unique fauna for a single lake.
As a temperate, coldwater species, it lives in cool water rather than the warm tropical conditions associated with many other loaches. Species-specific temperature and pH figures were not found in the sources reviewed, but the genus Cobitis as a whole is characteristic of temperate and subtropical Eurasia, typically inhabiting slow-moving rivers, lakes and ponds with a soft sand or silt bottom into which the fish can sift and burrow.
Feeding
No feeding study specific to Cobitis meridionalis was found in the sources reviewed, but its biology follows the pattern typical of the genus: a sand-sifting benthic omnivore that forages over and within the soft lake-bed substrate for small invertebrates. Likely food items include worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans and molluscs, along with organic detritus sifted from the sediment, all picked up with the aid of the small mouth barbels typical of Cobitis.
As with other spined loaches, natural feeding depends on access to a soft, sifting-friendly substrate — a fish adapted to burrow and forage in fine sand or silt cannot express normal feeding behaviour over gravel or bare glass.
Mating
Detailed courtship behaviour for Cobitis meridionalis has not been documented in the sources reviewed. What is known comes from field data around Lake Prespa: spawning takes place in a defined seasonal window, from late April to late May, coinciding with the lake's spring warming. Reported lifespan in the wild is notably short, around one year, which points to a fast-turnover population strategy rather than a long-lived one.
Genus-wide, Cobitis spawning is a temperate, spring-triggered event tied to rising water temperature and day length, with males of many species showing a wrapping behaviour around the female during the spawning act — a pattern general to the genus, though not specifically confirmed for this species.
Breeding
Cobitis meridionalis is an egg-scatterer, consistent with the rest of its genus: adhesive eggs are released among vegetation or over the substrate in the wild, with no parental care given by either parent afterwards. Spawning in Lake Prespa occurs in spring, from late April into late May.
No aquarium breeding of this species has been documented in the available literature — everything known about its reproduction comes from observation of the wild Prespa population, not from tank spawnings. This fits the wider pattern in the spined and pond loaches: several temperate Cobitis, Sabanejewia and the dojo/weather loach Misgurnus have occasionally been pond- or tank-spawned by dedicated keepers, but for a narrow lake endemic like C. meridionalis, spawning has only ever been recorded in the wild.
In the aquarium
There is no established aquarium-keeping literature for Cobitis meridionalis, and it is not a fish found in the ornamental trade — this is a lake-endemic conservation subject rather than a hobby species. Any care approach would have to be extrapolated cautiously from the wider genus: a coldwater or unheated setup rather than a tropical one, a soft sand substrate that allows natural sifting and burrowing, and gentle, careful use of medications, since — like all Cobitidae — it has fine, near-scaleless skin that makes it sensitive to copper and full-strength treatments.
Given its endangered status and narrow endemic range, this is not a species that should be collected for the trade in any case; its conservation value lies in Lake Prespa itself, not in aquarium propagation.
Conservation
Cobitis meridionalis is assessed by the IUCN as Endangered, an upgrade from its previous Vulnerable rating, reflecting mounting pressure on its single-lake range. As one of the endemic fishes of Lake Prespa — a system with only twelve endemic species in total, nine of them fish — it is entirely dependent on the health of that one lake and its tributaries.
The principal threats are habitat loss, water abstraction, pollution and eutrophication, pressures common to Lake Prespa's shrinking water levels and intensifying agricultural surroundings across the shared Albanian, Greek and North Macedonian catchment. Because the species exists nowhere else, any further deterioration in Prespa's water quality or level directly threatens its survival; there is no wild population elsewhere to buffer the loss.
