Gastromyzon danumensis is a small, dorsally-flattened hillstream loach from the fast, clear hill streams of Sabah, northern Borneo. Described from the Danum Valley Conservation Area in 1989, it belongs to a Bornean genus in which more than half the species are confined to a single river basin — a pattern of tight endemism that makes every species in the group ecologically precious. Like all hillstream loaches it is built for life on exposed rock in rapid, cold-bright, oxygen-saturated water, with a body so flattened and a ventral surface so engineered for suction that it can feed and shelter on bare stone in a current that would sweep any conventional fish away. Keeping it well means replicating those conditions faithfully: the species starves in a bare or newly-set-up tank and suffocates in warm, still water. It rewards the keeper who gets it right with long-lived, active fish and a spectacle found nowhere else in the aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Gastromyzon danumensis was described by Chin and Inger in 1989 from material collected in the Danum Valley Conservation Area, Lahad Datu District, Sabah, on the Malaysian side of Borneo. The type locality is in the Segama river system, one of Sabah's major drainages, whose headwaters run through protected forest in the Danum Valley — giving the species both its scientific epithet and a natural reserve as its anchor.

The genus Gastromyzon belongs to the family Gastromyzontidae (torrent loaches or sucker loaches), the hillstream group endemic to Sundaland and the surrounding region. More than half of Gastromyzon's described species are known only from a single river basin, and the genus as a whole is confined to Borneo — making it one of the most tightly range-restricted loach groups anywhere. Gastromyzon danumensis has been placed within the G. danumensis species group alongside close relatives including G. aequabilis and G. ingeri, which share a similar body plan and Bornean range. The Catalog of Fishes lists the valid name as Gastromyzon danumensis Chin & Inger, 1989; there are no widely used synonyms.

Morphology

The body is strikingly flattened from above — almost disc-like in dorsal profile — with the head broad, the snout blunt, and the pectoral and pelvic fins spread wide and low against the substrate. This architecture is the engineering solution to life in fast water: the broad ventral surface forms a functional suction pad that presses the fish to rock face even in heavy current, while the pectoral fins contribute to adhesion and directional movement. Adults reach about 2 in in standard length, making this a genuinely small loach suited to tanks measured in dozens rather than hundreds of litres, provided those tanks deliver the flow and oxygen the species requires.

The skin is nearly scaleless — the reduced scale cover that is characteristic of the loach lineage — and the colouration is a muted pattern of brownish or tan ground with darker mottled markings that serve as camouflage against the patterned cobble of a streamed. The near-scaleless skin is relevant to the keeper: it means the fish absorbs dissolved substances readily and is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many treatments.

Habitat

Gastromyzon danumensis inhabits fast-flowing, shallow, rocky streams in the forested hill country of Sabah, northern Borneo. It is a riffle specialist, confined to the most turbulent sections of clear hill streams where the current is strong enough to keep the streambed washed clean of fine sediment and the water perpetually saturated with dissolved oxygen. The substrate is cobble, boulder and exposed bedrock, surfaces that host a thin film of algae and diatoms — the biofilm that this fish is designed to exploit.

The water at these elevations is cool by tropical standards, soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral, and extraordinarily clear. The Segama system's headwaters run through old-growth dipterocarp forest, and the stream environment is shaded, unpolluted, and stable. These are among the cleanest waters in Southeast Asia, and a fish from them is correspondingly intolerant of organic loading, warm temperatures, and the low flow of a typical still aquarium.

Feeding

Gastromyzon danumensis is an obligate aufwuchs grazer — it makes its living by rasping the thin film of algae, diatoms, bacteria and organic detritus (collectively biofilm) from the surfaces of rocks in fast water. The oral disc and the associated musculature and dentition are purpose-built for this: the fish works methodically across stone surfaces, turning to follow the light and the growth. In nature it has no access to drifting flake, pellet or large invertebrate food, and its digestive system is sized for constant, low-density grazing rather than episodic large meals.

In the aquarium this means two things. First, the tank must be mature: a well-established setup with weeks or months of algae and biofilm growing on every rock face is the baseline, not an optional extra. A newly-set-up tank with bare rock will starve the fish even if supplemental food is offered. Second, supplementation should be chosen with care: algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, blanched courgette or cucumber, and small frozen foods such as bloodworm or brine shrimp can be offered, but these are supplements to a living biofilm substrate, not replacements for it. The fish will also graze naturally on any diatom or green algae film that builds up on glass and equipment.

Mating

Little is documented about the mating behaviour of Gastromyzon danumensis specifically. Within the genus, males are reported to be territorial toward each other and will spar and display over favoured patches of rock, but serious aggression is rare and the species is kept as a social group without significant harm among individuals. Females are generally plumper-bodied when in breeding condition, and this slight roundness of the abdomen is the most reliable external character for separating the sexes.

For spawning to be triggered, the fish presumably responds to the natural cues of its stream environment — changes in water temperature, photoperiod, flow rate, or the chemistry shifts associated with seasonal rain — though the precise triggers for this species have not been documented in the literature available. The species belongs to a group in which a small number of closely related hillstream genera have been coaxed to spawn in suitably equipped aquaria, but verified accounts for Gastromyzon specifically are sparse.

Breeding

Gastromyzon danumensis is rarely bred in home aquaria, and breeding accounts are sparse in the available literature. As a hillstream loach it is an egg-scatterer: when spawning does occur, eggs are deposited among stones and gravel in areas of fast flow, with no parental care from either sex. The eggs and larvae develop unattended in the interstitial spaces of the streambed, presumably sustained by the biofilm environment around them.

A subset of hillstream loach genera — most notably Sewellia — have been successfully spawned in mature, strongly-flowing river tanks set up to replicate a riffle habitat, and it is plausible that Gastromyzon might respond similarly in a well-prepared aquarium. However, no well-documented account of a home aquarium spawning of G. danumensis appears in the sources surveyed here. The honest advice is to focus on providing optimal water quality and flow, keep the fish in a social group, allow a mature biofilm to develop, and treat any resulting spawn as an unexpected bonus rather than a planned outcome.

In the aquarium

Gastromyzon danumensis is a species for the specialist keeper who is willing to set up a tank around the fish's needs rather than fitting the fish into a general community. The non-negotiable requirements are high water flow, high dissolved oxygen, cool water (68–75 °F), and a mature, biofilm-covered rockscape. A powerhead or strong canister outlet directed across a cobble substrate, supplemented by additional aeration if needed, is the starting point. The tank does not need to be large — a 35.5 in aquarium is workable given the fish's small adult size — but it does need to be well-established before the fish are introduced.

The species is social and should be kept in a group of at least three, ideally more. Males may spar lightly over prime feeding territories, but in a group in a properly furnished tank this rarely escalates. It coexists peaceably with other hillstream species that share its flow and temperature requirements; it should not be housed with warm-water tropical fish, heavy-bodied competitors, or anything large enough to treat it as prey. Being near-scaleless, it is sensitive to copper and to full-strength doses of common treatments — always dose at half-strength or less, use copper-free medications where possible, and keep water quality high to reduce the risk of disease in the first place. The fish is not a good candidate for a bare, newly-set-up, or neglected tank; in those conditions it will decline slowly and often die before the keeper identifies the cause.

Conservation

Gastromyzon danumensis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed January 2019). Its type locality in the Danum Valley Conservation Area is one of Sabah's best-protected lowland forest reserves, and the Segama drainage that hosts it remains in relatively good condition compared with the heavily modified river systems elsewhere in Borneo. These facts support a relatively stable status at present.

Nonetheless, the genus Gastromyzon faces the broader pressures that threaten all of Borneo's freshwater endemics: deforestation and land conversion in the catchments above these streams, sedimentation from logging roads and agricultural expansion, and the cascading effects of reduced canopy cover on stream temperature and flow. A species confined to a single river system — as many Gastromyzon are — has no refuge if that system is degraded. G. danumensis benefits from protected-area coverage that many of its congeners lack, but it remains restricted in range and is not a species that would recover quickly from a significant habitat event. Aquarium specimens almost certainly originate from wild collection; the species is not commercially bred at any scale.
