Gastromyzon ingeri is a small hillstream loach endemic to a narrow slice of Sabah in northern Borneo — the Tawau River drainage of the Wallace Bay system — where it clings to wave-washed boulders in cool, fast-flowing streams at elevations up to 270 metres. Described by Heok Hui Tan in 2006, it belongs to the genus Gastromyzon, the Borneo suckers, a group renowned among experienced aquarists for being simultaneously beautiful and brutally unforgiving of warm or still water. Reaching about 2 in in standard length, it is a flattened, suction-capable rheophile that rasps biofilm and diatoms from rock surfaces and will starve in any tank not yet thick with algal growth. Its restricted range, sensitivity to habitat degradation, and pressure from aquarium collection have placed it in the Near Threatened category on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Gastromyzon ingeri was formally described by the ichthyologist Heok Hui Tan in 2006 from material collected in the Tawau River system of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. The species epithet honours the late Robert F. Inger, the distinguished American herpetologist and naturalist who made foundational contributions to the natural history of Borneo. The genus Gastromyzon Günther, 1874 — the name means roughly 'belly-sucker', combining Greek gastro (belly) and myzon (sucking) — belongs to the family Balitoridae, the hillstream loaches, within the superfamily Cobitoidea.

The genus Gastromyzon is confined to Borneo and encompasses more than two dozen recognised species, many of them narrow endemics separated by watershed boundaries. Before Tan's 2006 revision several specimens now assigned to distinct species were lumped under earlier, broadly applied names, so older literature and trade labels may not reflect the current species-level taxonomy. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name Gastromyzon ingeri Tan, 2006.

Morphology

Like all Gastromyzon, G. ingeri has a strongly dorso-ventrally flattened body that fits tightly against rock surfaces in high-velocity current. The paired pectoral and pelvic fins are broad and horizontal, functioning together as a friction pad rather than a true suction cup; grip is achieved through the Bernoulli effect as water rushes beneath the flattened ventral surface and through active muscular clamping of the fins. The head is blunt and wide; the mouth is positioned on the underside and ringed by fleshy lips adapted for rasping biofilm from substrate. Adults reach a standard length of approximately 2 in.

The body is patterned with a network of dark spots and saddles on a pale tan to yellowish-brown ground, providing effective camouflage against the mottled surfaces of submerged granite and sandstone. The skin is close to scaleless in the loach manner — fine, deeply embedded scales offer little barrier to chemical absorption, which has important implications for medication. A suborbital spine is present, as in the botiid loaches, though in hillstream loaches its defensive use is less dramatic than in the larger botiids.

Habitat

Gastromyzon ingeri inhabits cool, fast-flowing, rocky hill streams in the Tawau River drainage of Wallace Bay, Sabah, at elevations up to around 270 metres above sea level. The streams in this system run over bedrock and boulders, carry very high dissolved oxygen from constant turbulence, and remain cool — water temperatures in the type locality are recorded at 64–68 °F (64–68 °F), well below the warm-tropical baseline that dominates most aquarium fish literature.

The substrate is typically clean rock colonised by a thin but productive layer of algae, diatoms and bacterial biofilm — the food base on which the whole Gastromyzon guild depends. There is little suspended sediment in healthy habitat; turbidity from erosion or run-off is a direct stressor. The species is a genuine rheophile: it seeks out the highest-velocity zones that its grip can handle and does not tolerate the warm, still conditions of a conventional community aquarium.

Feeding

Gastromyzon ingeri is an obligate aufwuchs grazer. In nature it uses its specialised oral disc to rasp thin films of algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, detrital organic matter and associated microfauna (nematodes, small insect larvae, rotifers) directly from rock surfaces. This is not facultative grazing alongside other food sources — it is the primary mode of nutrition, and the fish is anatomically built for it.

In the aquarium this means the tank must be mature, with at least several months of established algal and biofilm growth on the rocks before the fish arrives. A newly-set-up tank cannot feed a hillstream loach, and this is the single most common cause of death in the trade: fish arrive fit and then slowly waste away in a clean, bare system that offers no food surface. Supplementary offerings of frozen bloodworms, daphnia and tubifex are accepted and help condition the fish; blanched spinach, zucchini and cucumber placed on flat stones mimic a food-laden rock surface. Dry flake or pellet foods are rarely taken from open water and should not be relied upon.

Mating

Virtually nothing is documented about the reproductive behaviour of Gastromyzon ingeri specifically. What is known from the genus as a whole, and from the hillstream loach family more broadly, is that males tend to be slightly more slender and sometimes more intensely patterned than females, which are rounder-bellied when gravid — but dimorphism is subtle and reliable sexing is difficult outside of conditioning season.

In wild populations, spawning is presumably triggered by seasonal variation in flow, temperature and food availability linked to Borneo's monsoonal rainfall pattern. Whether G. ingeri undertakes any form of aggregation or upstream movement to spawn, as some cyprinid hill-stream fishes do, is unknown. In the aquarium, conditions that approximate natural seasonal shifts — slight temperature drops, increased flow, and a maturing biofilm surface — are the most likely inducements to breeding behaviour, but documented success is sparse.

Breeding

Gastromyzon ingeri is not, to current knowledge, bred regularly in home aquaria. The genus Gastromyzon as a whole has a poor breeding record in captivity; a handful of hobbyist reports describe eggs being scattered over or buried among stones and gravel in well-maintained, strongly-flowing river tanks, with no parental care by either sex, but verified, repeatable success is rare. This matches the broader pattern for hillstream loaches: a few species — notably Sewellia lineolata — will spawn in a mature high-flow setup when conditions are right, but most remain unproven.

The honest aquarist position is that fish in the trade are wild-collected from Sabah. There is no large-scale farm production of this species using hormone induction. A keeper acquiring G. ingeri should expect to keep these fish well rather than to breed them, and should source from reputable importers who hold the fish properly rather than buying thin, newly-imported specimens.

In the aquarium

Gastromyzon ingeri is a specialist fish that rewards careful preparation but punishes shortcuts sharply. The first prerequisite is water temperature: this species comes from streams running at 64–68 °F and should be kept in that range — not the 75–81 °F that a standard tropical community demands. Warm water reduces dissolved oxygen, suppresses the biofilm growth the fish depends on, and shortens its life. A chiller or, in temperate climates, a cool unheated room may be necessary.

Flow is the second axis. The tank must replicate torrent conditions: a turnover rate of 10–15 times the tank volume per hour is the widely-cited target. Multiple powerheads or a strong canister return directed across a rockscape creates the unidirectional, near-laminar flow the fish prefers. The rocks themselves should be smooth and flat, offering grip surfaces, and the tank should be running and producing biofilm for several months before any fish is introduced. A group of four or more specimens is appropriate — the fish are social in the wild and are less likely to show stress-related hiding when kept with conspecifics. Because the skin is near-scaleless, any copper-based medication or full-strength treatment must be avoided; half-doses of loach-safe products are the rule, and the tank's intense oxygenation makes the species surprisingly susceptible to oxygen-consuming disease outbreaks if flow ever falters.

These are not easy fish, but a cool, fast, biofilm-rich river tank built around them is one of the most visually striking setups in the hobby, and a healthy group rasping actively across a boulder face is deeply satisfying to observe.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Gastromyzon ingeri as Near Threatened in 2018, reflecting the species' extremely restricted range — it is known only from the Tawau River drainage of Wallace Bay in Sabah — and its dependence on clear, cool, fast-flowing streams that are sensitive to the forest-clearance, oil-palm conversion and road-building that have transformed much of lowland Sabah in recent decades. Sedimentation following deforestation is particularly damaging: it smothers the biofilm-covered rock surfaces that form the entire food base of the Gastromyzon guild.

Aquarium collection adds a secondary pressure. Because wild populations cannot be supplemented from captive production — the species is not farmed — every fish in the trade is a wild-caught individual from an already-limited gene pool and range. Responsible sourcing from importers who collect sustainably and hold fish in appropriate conditions is the minimum standard; the species is not currently protected under CITES, but its restricted endemism means that localised over-collection could affect wild populations more rapidly than the NT category alone might suggest.
