Gastromyzon katibasensis was described by Leh and Chai in 2003 from specimens collected in the Katibas drainage of Sarawak, the Malaysian portion of Borneo, and the specific epithet directly commemorates that river system. It belongs to the genus Gastromyzon, a diverse radiation of flattened hillstream loaches largely confined to Borneo's fast-water drainages, placed in the family Balitoridae within the superfamily Cobitoidea.
The broader Gastromyzon assemblage has been subject to ongoing revision as ichthyologists work through Borneo's exceptionally species-rich hillstream fauna; several species have shifted placement or been described from previously overlooked populations. Morphology
Like all members of the genus, Gastromyzon katibasensis is strongly dorsoventrally flattened — it is built for life on the undersides of rocks and on smooth rock faces in fast current. The pectoral and pelvic fins are broad and held horizontal, functioning together with the slightly concave ventral surface to create a suction effect in flowing water; the fish effectively pins itself to the substrate against current velocities that would carry away almost any other similarly sized fish.
Adult size is approximately 2.5–3 in in standard length, putting it among the smaller members of the family. The body is covered in reduced, embedded scales that give the skin a smooth, almost naked texture — a characteristic shared across hillstream loaches and with practical consequences for medication tolerance. The head is blunt and depressed, the mouth subterminal and equipped for rasping hard surfaces. Colour and patterning details for this species are not well documented in available sources beyond the genus-typical mottled or banded pattern on a tan to olive-brown ground.
Habitat
Gastromyzon katibasensis is a rheophilic specialist native to cool, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated hill streams in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. It inhabits the rocky, torrent sections of highland drainages — the kind of water where the current is strong enough to polish rock surfaces clean and where dissolved oxygen remains near saturation. The substrate in its home streams is exposed bedrock, boulders and clean gravel over which water moves rapidly, keeping sediment suspended and biofilm surfaces accessible.
Water conditions in these streams are cool by Bornean standards — approximately 64–72 °F — with a pH range of roughly 6.5–7.5 and very low conductivity typical of rainforest highland runoff. This is emphatically not the warm, still, tannin-stained blackwater of the lowland river systems with which many tropical Asian fish are associated; it is a thermally stable, oxygen-rich, cool torrent environment, and the fish is physiologically adapted to those conditions.
Feeding
Gastromyzon katibasensis is an aufwuchs grazer: it rasps algae, diatoms, protozoans and associated organic matter from submerged rock surfaces using its subterminal, scraping mouth. In its natural habitat this biofilm is continuously renewed by strong current and high light penetration, providing a reliable food source on every exposed rock face in the stream.
In the aquarium, the most important feeding consideration is that this fish requires a mature tank with well-colonised rock surfaces — it will starve in a newly set up or bare tank where no biofilm has developed, and this is the most common cause of its death in captivity. Supplementary foods should include Spirulina-based sinking wafers, blanched greens such as courgette or spinach, and small frozen or live invertebrate foods such as daphnia and baby brine shrimp. The fish should never be expected to live on prepared flake food alone.
Mating
Sexing Gastromyzon katibasensis in the aquarium is not well documented in available sources. As is broadly true of hillstream loaches, external dimorphism is subtle at best; mature females may appear somewhat broader-bodied when ripe. There are no published accounts of the species' mating behaviour in captivity, and the conditions required to bring the fish into breeding condition — the interaction of water temperature, flow regime, and seasonal cues in a Sarawak highland stream — have not been reproduced systematically in hobbyist settings.
Based on the pattern established for other Gastromyzon species and Balitoridae generally, pairing is likely to be opportunistic among fish in mature, well-oxygenated river-tank conditions, rather than driven by the dramatic seasonal flood migrations seen in lowland loach groups.
Breeding
Gastromyzon katibasensis is not known to be regularly or reliably bred in home aquaria. Like most hillstream loaches, it is an egg-scatterer: eggs are deposited among stones and gravel in fast-flowing water with no subsequent parental care from either sex. The adults scatter and the eggs are left to develop in the oxygenated current.
A small number of hillstream loach species — most notably Sewellia lineolata — have been spawned in mature, powerhead-driven river tanks, and it is conceivable that Gastromyzon katibasensis could follow this pattern given sufficiently optimal conditions. However, no verified spawning records for this specific species appear in available sources, and hobbyists should approach it expecting to keep, not breed, the fish. The commercial trade in Gastromyzon katibasensis, where it exists at all, draws entirely on wild-collected stock; there is no captive farming of this species.
In the aquarium
Gastromyzon katibasensis is a fish for experienced keepers with a dedicated hillstream setup. The non-negotiable conditions are strong, unidirectional flow (a powerful canister filter directed along the tank, or a powerhead return along the back wall), cool water in the 64–72 °F range, high dissolved oxygen, and a mature biofilm-covered rockscape. A river tank aquascape — smooth river cobbles and flat rock slates arranged to funnel current, with no fine substrate that would silt the rock surfaces — is the correct environment. Biological maturity matters enormously: the tank must be running for several months before the fish is introduced so that algae and diatom films are established.
This species is sensitive to elevated temperatures and stagnant conditions. A drop in flow, a heater malfunction that warms the tank, or oxygen depletion during a power cut can be fatal quickly. Being near-scaleless (as are all Gastromyzon), it is sensitive to copper-based medications and should receive half-doses or copper-free treatments if disease treatment is necessary — a particular concern because hillstream loaches can be prone to skin parasites when water quality lapses. The fish is not aggressive and can be kept with other cool-water, fast-water hillstream species; it should not be mixed with fish that need warm, still water. Due to its rarity in the trade, captive specimens should be purchased from specialist loach importers who can certify healthy, acclimated stock.
Conservation

Its native range is narrow — the Katibas drainage of Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo — which is typical of the high endemism seen across Borneo's hillstream loach fauna, where many species have distributions of just a few river catchments or even single river systems.
The broader threats facing Borneo's highland stream endemics are well established: deforestation reduces the forest cover that stabilises stream temperatures and siltation, and logging operations directly introduce sediment that smothers the clean rock surfaces these fish depend on. Hydroelectric dam construction on Sarawak's rivers has affected downstream flow regimes and blocked movement in some drainages. For a species with so restricted a range, any significant alteration to water quality or thermal regime in the Katibas system could have outsized consequences. The aquarium trade in this species is minimal and does not appear to be a significant pressure, though wild-collected individuals are what enter the hobby.
