Gastromyzon megalepis is a small, flattened hillstream loach from the fast, rocky torrents of Borneo, built from the ground up for life in rushing water. Like all members of the genus, it presses its undersurface against smooth boulders and cobbles in oxygen-saturated hill streams, rasping diatoms and biofilm with a modified mouth that doubles as a sucker. It reaches about 2.5 in in standard length and was described by Tyson Roberts in 1982 — one of the many Gastromyzon species found only in Borneo's clear, cool-running headwaters. In the aquarium it is a specialist: a fish that needs fast, highly oxygenated, biologically mature water and a surface blanketed in algae and biofilm, failing quickly in the bare, warm, still conditions that suit a conventional community tank.

Taxonomy & naming

Gastromyzon megalepis was described by the American ichthyologist Tyson Roberts in 1982. The genus Gastromyzon was established by Günther in 1874 for the torrent loaches of Borneo, and Roberts's 1982 revision expanded and clarified the genus considerably, placing megalepis among a constellation of closely related species that share the same rheophilic body plan.

The family Balitoridae (sometimes placed within the broader Cypriniformes as Balitoridae sensu stricto) encompasses the hillstream loaches of South and Southeast Asia. Within Balitoridae, Gastromyzon belongs to the subfamily Gastromyzontinae — a Bornean lineage whose members all share the highly flattened body, paired sucker-like fin surfaces and biofilm-grazing lifestyle. The genus is rich in species and endemic to Borneo; Gastromyzon megalepis is one of several congeners that can superficially resemble one another, making reliable field identification dependent on scale counts and meristic data.

No major generic reassignment has been proposed for this species; Gastromyzon megalepis as described by Roberts, 1982 remains the current valid combination in the Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Gastromyzon megalepis is a small, strongly depressed loach reaching approximately 2.5 in in standard length. The body is broad and very flat — a profile shaped by millions of years of selection for torrent life — with a wide, rounded head, a subterminal mouth modified for suction and scraping, and paired pectoral and pelvic fins that spread laterally to form a broad adhesive platform against current-swept stone.

The species name megalepis is Greek for 'large-scaled', and it reflects the comparatively large scales that characterise this species relative to some congeners — a meristic distinction Roberts used to separate it from similar hillstream loaches of Borneo. The fins are stout and low-profiled. There is no erectile suborbital spine of the kind found in botiid loaches; Gastromyzon belongs to a different lineage entirely, and its defensive anatomy is the adhesion-disc body form itself rather than a spine.

Colouration is typically a cryptic mottled brown and cream pattern that blends against algae-covered granite and sandstone in dappled stream light — practical camouflage against the spate-current substrate it inhabits.

Habitat

Gastromyzon megalepis is native to Borneo, confined to fast-flowing, clear, oxygen-rich hill streams and rivers. These are rheophilic habitats: water moving quickly over clean rock, cobble and boulder beds, with little silt or fine sediment. The streams are typically cool — daytime temperatures of 68–75 °F are characteristic of mid-elevation Bornean hill streams — and the dissolved oxygen content is high year-round, maintained by turbulence and surface agitation.

The fish spends virtually its entire life pressed against hard substrate in the current, feeding in the boundary layer where water velocity drops at the rock surface. It is found in the same kind of microhabitat as other Gastromyzon species: smooth boulders and bedrock faces in the main current, sheltered slightly in flow shadows behind larger stones. Soft substrates, still water and warm lowland river conditions are not part of its range.

Like many Bornean hillstream loaches, Gastromyzon megalepis is likely a narrow endemic with a restricted range within the island. Its dependence on clear, fast, cool water makes it sensitive to catchment disturbance, sedimentation and any warming of stream temperatures.

Feeding

Gastromyzon megalepis is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. Its modified mouth scrapes diatoms, green algae, filamentous algae, microinvertebrates and detritus from the surfaces of rock in the current — the thick biological crust that builds on stable substrate in clear, well-lit hill streams. This grazing niche is the ecological role the entire Gastromyzon genus occupies in Bornean torrents.

In the aquarium, feeding is the single greatest care challenge. The fish requires a tank that has been running long enough — typically several months — for dense biofilm and algal growth to establish across rocks and glass. A newly set-up tank, however technically correct its water chemistry, provides nothing for the fish to rasp and it will starve. The mistake of adding a hillstream loach to a recently established aquarium is the most common cause of rapid decline. Supplemental foods — blanched spinach, zucchini and other soft greens pressed flat against rock, algae wafers placed at the base of a stone in flow, and small frozen foods such as Cyclops or daphnia — help bridge shortfalls, but they cannot replace a mature, algae-covered rockscape. Small live and frozen invertebrates are taken where the current carries them past the fish's position.

Mating

Little is documented about the courtship behaviour of Gastromyzon megalepis specifically. In congeners that have been observed, males are typically somewhat slimmer and females visibly deeper-bodied when gravid, but these differences are subtle and unreliable in lean, out-of-condition fish. Identifying a potential pair from a group of wild-caught specimens requires close observation over time.

In the broader genus, spawning in nature is likely tied to seasonal water conditions — changes in flow, temperature or photoperiod associated with Borneo's alternating wet and dry periods. Triggering these cues in captivity is difficult. Gastromyzon scitulus is the only congener reported to have spawned under aquarium conditions, and that was achieved in a purpose-designed, high-flow research setup rather than a conventional hobbyist tank. For Gastromyzon megalepis there are no verified reports of captive spawning; the fish is not known to breed in home aquaria.

Breeding

Gastromyzon megalepis is, for practical purposes, not bred in home aquaria. It is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: spawning hillstream loaches deposit adhesive eggs among stones and gravel in fast water, and neither parent guards the eggs or fry. The combination of highly specific water conditions, the need for a seasonally cued spawning trigger, and the difficulty of maintaining both sexes in breeding condition in a home tank means that verified spawnings are essentially absent from the hobbyist record.

Only Gastromyzon scitulus, a close relative, has been reported to spawn under controlled aquarium conditions, and those accounts involve high-flow purpose-built rearing setups rather than conventional display tanks. For most hillstream loaches — including Gastromyzon megalepis — the honest picture is that they are not bred by hobbyists, and any fish encountered in the trade are wild-collected from Bornean streams. Keepers should plan to enjoy the fish rather than breed it, and should bear in mind that wild-sourced stock means responsible buying from reputable suppliers matters for both the fish's welfare and the long-term health of Bornean stream populations.

In the aquarium

Gastromyzon megalepis demands specific conditions and fails quickly without them. The non-negotiable requirements are cool water (68–75 °F), very high flow (a turnover rate of 10–15 times the tank volume per hour is recommended by experienced keepers; at minimum 4–5 times), excellent oxygenation, very low nitrate, and — above all — a mature tank with a thick growth of biofilm and algae across every rock surface. A tank that cannot offer all five will not sustain this fish.

The aquascape should be dominated by smooth rocks and boulders arranged to channel the flow rather than block it, with minimal fine substrate. The fish spends almost all of its time adhered to rock faces in the current and rarely uses open substrate or the water column. It is peaceful toward other species and can be kept with other rheophilic hillstream loaches of similar size, or with small, fast-water cyprinids that tolerate cool temperatures. Avoid warm-water community fish; the temperature range that suits Gastromyzon megalepis (68–75 °F) is too cool for most tropical species.

Because the trade in this species is entirely wild-collected, newly imported fish often arrive stressed and may carry parasites. Quarantine in a mature, high-flow tank is advisable before introduction to a display aquarium. The fish does not have the large, loosely attached scales of kuhli loaches or the near-scaleless skin of botiids, but it is a small, sensitive species and should be treated with caution if medication is needed — half-doses of copper-free treatments are the safer approach. Given the right conditions, Gastromyzon megalepis is a captivating, active fish, constantly in motion on the rockface; given the wrong ones, it fades within weeks.

Conservation

Gastromyzon megalepis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed 10 January 2019). The LC assessment reflects the species' presumed presence across a reasonable extent of suitable habitat in Borneo and the absence of documented population collapse at the time of assessment.

Nonetheless, the ecology of the species makes it inherently vulnerable. It is a habitat specialist restricted to clear, fast, cool hill streams — environments that are acutely sensitive to catchment-level disturbance. Deforestation, agricultural run-off, sedimentation, sand and gravel extraction from stream beds, and any land use that increases water temperatures or turbidity can degrade or eliminate suitable microhabitats rapidly. Borneo has experienced substantial forest loss, and many of the island's smaller stream systems have been affected.

The species is occasionally exported for the ornamental trade; all individuals in the trade are wild-collected, as captive breeding is not achieved. For a narrow endemic from a degraded catchment, sustained wild collection adds pressure to populations that are already limited by the specialised habitats they require. Buyers support responsible husbandry by sourcing fish from reputable importers and providing the conditions the fish actually needs — a poorly kept wild-collected specimen dies rapidly and provides no conservation benefit.
