Taxonomy & naming
Gastromyzon viriosus was described by Heok Hee Tan in 2006 in a comprehensive revision of the Bornean torrent loaches: 'The Borneo suckers. Revision of the torrent loaches of Borneo (Balitoridae): Gastromyzon, Neogastromyzon' (Natural History Publications, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia). The species epithet viriosus is Latin, meaning 'strong' or 'vigorous', a reference to the robust constitution of the fish relative to some of its congeners.
The genus Gastromyzon belongs to the family Balitoridae (hillstream loaches), and within that family to the Bornean torrent-loach lineage. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the combination Gastromyzon viriosus Tan, 2006. No synonyms are currently on record. FishBase lists the species under entry 63174 with the trade name 'Yellowfinned Borneo sucker'.
Morphology
Gastromyzon viriosus reaches about 2 in standard length — a small fish even by hillstream standards. The body is strongly dorsoventrally flattened, with a broad, depressed head and wide, horizontal pectoral and pelvic fins that together form a ventral sucker disc. This is not a simple adhesive cup but a hydrodynamic structure: the fish presses its paired fins against the substrate and lets the fast current push it down rather than washing it away. The belly and lower fin surfaces are smooth and in close contact with the rock; the dorsal surface is patterned in the typical Gastromyzon fashion of contrasting spots or blotches over a dark ground, with yellowish or orange-tinted fin rays — the feature that gives it its trade name.
Like all balitorids, Gastromyzon viriosus lacks large, obvious scales on most of the body; the skin is nearly naked to the touch, embedded with tiny scales that offer little barrier to medications. The mouth is positioned underneath and forward-directed for rasping biofilm, with fleshy, mobile lips suitable for gripping uneven rock. The species has 9 dorsal soft rays and 6 anal soft rays, with 30–32 vertebrae as recorded by FishBase.
Habitat
Gastromyzon viriosus is native to Borneo and lives in the fast-flowing, rocky hill streams and torrents characteristic of the island's interior uplands. Its typical habitat is clear, shallow, highly oxygenated water rushing over bedrock and boulders, often with a gravel-and-sand substrate between the larger rocks. The current is strong enough to dislodge most organisms; Gastromyzon viriosus is specifically adapted to exploit this niche, clinging to exposed surfaces while competitors are swept away.
The temperature range at these elevations is meaningfully cooler than Borneo's lowland rivers — approximately 68–75 °F — and dissolved oxygen levels are high because of the constant turbulence. The water is soft, circumneutral to mildly acidic and very low in dissolved nutrients. Biofilm, diatoms and periphytic algae coat the rocks and constitute the primary food base. This is an obligate rheophile: it does not venture into slow-moving or still water in the wild.
Feeding
In the wild, Gastromyzon viriosus is a biofilm and aufwuchs grazer. It rasps algae, diatoms, microbes and organic detritus from the surface of rocks using its specialised, downward-directed mouth. This biofilm forms an enormous part — probably the majority — of its natural caloric intake, and it is adapted to extract nutrition from a food source that most fish ignore.
In the aquarium, the single most important feeding consideration is that a new or sterile tank offers essentially no food at all to this species, and newly acquired fish routinely starve before their keepers realise it. A tank must be allowed to mature for weeks to months before introducing Gastromyzon viriosus, so that a genuine biofilm develops on rocks, glass and décor surfaces. Once established, it will graze continuously throughout the day. Supplementary feeding should focus on algae wafers pressed against a rock or glass, thinly sliced blanched vegetables (cucumber, courgette, spinach), and spirulina-based sinking foods. High-protein foods — meaty frozen foods fed in quantity — cause digestive problems and should form only a tiny fraction of the diet. Biofilm is not optional; it is the foundation of this fish's longevity.
Mating
Sexual dimorphism in Gastromyzon viriosus is subtle. Mature females are typically broader-bodied and deeper through the belly when in spawning condition; males may appear slightly slimmer and more elongate. These differences become apparent mainly in a mature group of healthy, well-fed fish. There is no reliably distinct colour pattern between the sexes.
Like other hillstream loaches, spawning behaviour in the wild is understood primarily from observations of closely related species. Pairs or groups likely spawn in shallow, fast-running sections of stream, with males pursuing ripe females over the rock surface. The cue is probably a combination of cool, highly oxygenated water, strong current and seasonal water-level changes. Recreating these conditions in precise detail in captivity is what makes spawning so infrequent.
Breeding
Gastromyzon viriosus is rarely bred in home aquaria, though spawning has been documented in well-maintained, strongly flowing aquariums — placing it among the small minority of hillstream loaches for which captive reproduction has been recorded. Spawning follows the egg-scattering pattern typical of balitorids: the pair spawns over rocks or in narrow crevices, the female depositing small clutches of approximately 100 tiny adhesive eggs; there is no parental care and the adults take no further interest in the eggs.
Successful breeding requires a mature, high-flow biotope aquarium with a healthy biofilm on all surfaces, very clean water, and cool temperatures. Fry are minute and are extremely sensitive to water quality; survival depends almost entirely on an abundant and established biofilm as first food, since commercial fry foods are generally too large and too protein-rich. The honest expectation for most keepers is that breeding will not occur without dedicated effort and a purpose-set-up river tank; Gastromyzon viriosus is not a species that will spawn incidentally in a community aquarium.
In the aquarium
Keeping Gastromyzon viriosus successfully requires accepting that it is a specialist, not a generalist. The three most common keeper failures are: adding it to an immature tank (no biofilm, fish starves); keeping it in warm, still or poorly oxygenated water (fish suffocates and weakens); and keeping just one or two individuals (a social species that becomes stressed in isolation).
A suitable aquarium is a mature, cool-water, high-flow hillstream biotope. A 60-litre minimum tank is suggested, but flow is more important than volume: turnover of 10–20 times the tank volume per hour is appropriate, achieved with powerheads or a strong canister filter directed to create good current over a rockscape. Temperature should remain in the 68–75 °F range — this is not a warm tropical fish, and temperatures above 79 °F reduce dissolved oxygen and stress the fish. The substrate should be smooth river gravel and flat stones with open areas for grazing; bogwood and slate add structure. Keep in groups of at least five: this is a social species and isolated individuals are consistently more secretive and less vigorous than those kept in a group.
Because the skin is effectively scaleless, Gastromyzon viriosus absorbs medications readily and is sensitive to copper-based treatments and to full-strength doses of many standard remedies. If disease treatment is required, use copper-free products and begin at half the stated dose. Nitrate should be kept well below 50 mg/L; fortnightly to monthly partial water changes of 20–30% are appropriate. Given correct conditions, this is a peaceful, active, fascinating fish that grazes openly in the current throughout the day.
Conservation
The IUCN assessed Gastromyzon viriosus as Near Threatened in January 2019. The primary concern is its restricted geographic distribution within Borneo combined with ongoing habitat degradation. Its rheophilic hill-stream habitat is threatened by agro-industry expansion (particularly oil-palm and rubber plantations), wood and pulp plantations, commercial logging and wood harvesting, and industrial effluents — all of which alter flow regimes, increase siltation and reduce the water quality that this specialist requires.
Gastromyzon viriosus is collected for the aquarium trade as a wild-caught fish; there is no meaningful captive-breeding supply chain for this species. Given the restricted range, limited tolerance for habitat degradation and ongoing pressure on Bornean stream systems, the Near Threatened rating reflects a genuinely precarious situation. Keepers who acquire this species should be aware that it is an ecologically narrow endemic from a pressured environment and should source it from reputable importers who can demonstrate responsible wild-collection practices.
