Gastromyzon zebrinus is a small, flattened hillstream loach from the fast-flowing rocky streams of Borneo, described by Tan in 2006. Like all members of the Balitoridae, it has evolved a suction-disc belly for gripping rock in strong current, and it is a specialist in every sense: it needs cool, rushing, highly oxygenated water, a mature rockscape thick with biofilm, and absolutely nothing resembling the warm, still tank it is too often given. Get the water right and it is a striking, active fish with bold zebra-like patterning; get it wrong and it starves or suffocates within weeks.

Taxonomy & naming

Gastromyzon zebrinus was described by Heok Hee Tan in 2006 from specimens collected in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, its type locality. It belongs to the family Balitoridae — the hillstream loaches of South and Southeast Asia — whose members are characterised by a flattened, streamlined body and a ventral suction apparatus formed by modified paired fins and adhesive skin, allowing them to cling to bare rock in torrent conditions.

The genus Gastromyzon is endemic to Borneo and contains a number of species restricted to fast-hill-stream habitats across the island. Cobitoidea, the superfamily encompassing all loaches, has been substantially reshuffled by molecular and morphological work over the past two decades; Balitoridae as now delimited covers the true hillstream groups of Asia. There are no synonyms in current use for G. zebrinus, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists the combination as valid. The species has not been split or lumped since its description.

Morphology

Gastromyzon zebrinus is a small fish, reaching approximately 3–4 in standard length. The body is strongly depressed — flattened top-to-bottom — with a broad, paddle-shaped profile when viewed from above, tapering to a narrow caudal peduncle. The head is wide and low, with small eyes set high and a mouth that is fleshy and underslung, adapted for scraping biofilm from rock surfaces. The pectoral and pelvic fins are broad and horizontal, acting in concert with the specialised ventral skin to form the adhesive grip that allows the fish to hold position in powerful current.

The common name references the bold zebra-pattern: alternating pale and dark bands crossing the body in a roughly transverse direction, giving the fish a striped appearance that distinguishes it from plainer Gastromyzon congeners. The skin is effectively scaleless — deeply embedded scales leave it smooth to the touch — which is a critical point for medication. There is no prominent erectile suborbital spine as seen in botiid loaches; Balitoridae lacks this feature.

Habitat

In the wild, Gastromyzon zebrinus inhabits fast-flowing, clear, rocky hill streams in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. These are rheophilic torrent environments: water cascades over exposed rock and boulders, the current is powerful, and dissolved oxygen is at or near saturation year-round. The substrate is bare rock or coarse gravel with a dense coating of algae, diatoms and biofilm — the primary food resource for the fish. Water temperatures in Bornean hill streams are distinctly cool relative to the lowland rivers, typically in the range of 64–75 °F (64–75 °F).

This is a strictly freshwater, non-migratory specialist tightly tied to its torrent microhabitat. It does not venture into still backwaters, warm lowland rivers, or any lentic environment. The combination of cool temperature, very high oxygen levels, and powerful current is non-negotiable — these are not soft preferences but the conditions under which the fish's physiology evolved. Slow or warm water rapidly becomes hypoxic relative to the fish's needs.

Feeding

Gastromyzon zebrinus is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. In nature it rasps algae, diatoms, periphyton and the micro-invertebrates embedded in biofilm from the surface of rocks, spending most of its active time pressed against the substrate and inching across it methodically. This mode of feeding requires a well-established, algae-colonised rockscape — a tank bare of biofilm offers almost nothing to eat, and the fish will starve even if other foods are present.

In the aquarium, a mature tank is the first requirement. Once biofilm is established, the diet can be supplemented with algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking pellets, blanched courgette or spinach, and small frozen foods such as daphnia or baby brine shrimp. Live and frozen bloodworm may be taken but should not dominate the diet, which is fundamentally herbivorous-to-omnivorous. Feeding directly on biofilm-covered rock between supplemental offerings is the natural rhythm; overfeeding with rich protein foods at the expense of plant matter and biofilm will compromise condition over time.

Mating

Data on the mating behaviour of Gastromyzon zebrinus specifically is sparse. Within the genus Gastromyzon and the broader Balitoridae, sexual dimorphism is generally subtle: females tend to be plumper-bodied when ripe, and some species show minor differences in the extent of the fleshy rim around the mouth or in head width, but the sexes are difficult to distinguish reliably except in fully conditioned adults. Conditioning a group on varied foods in a mature high-flow tank is the most practical approach to bringing them into spawning condition.

As with most hillstream loaches, any reproductive behaviour is likely to follow the pattern typical of the group: eggs deposited among gravel, stones or rock crevices in fast-flowing water, with the male briefly attending the female before spawning. The details for this species in particular have not been documented in the published literature.

Breeding

Gastromyzon zebrinus is rarely if ever bred in home aquaria. It is an egg-scattering species with no parental care: ripe fish scatter eggs among fine gravel or rock crevices in fast water, the eggs and larvae receive no further attention, and the adults play no guarding or brooding role. A few Balitoridae species — most famously Sewellia lineolata — have spawned in mature river-style aquaria with strong flow, adequate biofilm, and conditioning on varied foods, and it is conceivable that G. zebrinus might follow a similar pattern under ideal conditions. Verified reports for this species are lacking, however, and the keeper should approach it as a display fish rather than a breeding project.

There is no suborbital-spine cave-guarding behaviour and no mouthbrooding — loaches are egg-scatterers, and Balitoridae are among the groups least represented in hobby breeding records. The fish available in the trade are overwhelmingly wild-collected from Borneo.

In the aquarium

Gastromyzon zebrinus is a specialist that rewards a specialist setup. The three non-negotiables are flow, oxygen and biofilm. The tank must have a powerful return pump or additional powerheads creating a unidirectional current, and the water must be cool (64–75 °F / 64–75 °F) and highly oxygenated — surface agitation must be vigorous. A 23.5–31.5 in tank is a workable minimum for a small group, furnished with smooth and textured rock, slate and rounded cobbles arranged to create a varied current landscape. The tank should be mature — run for several months before introducing hillstream loaches — so that the rockscape carries a dense colonisation of algae and biofilm.

Because the skin is effectively scaleless, Gastromyzon zebrinus is sensitive to copper and to full-strength doses of many standard medications. Any treatment must use copper-free formulations at reduced dose, with close observation. The fish is also prone to oxygen deprivation if flow is interrupted: a power outage or a failed pump can be lethal within hours in a warm room, so a battery-backed air pump is a sensible precaution.

It can be kept with other coolwater hillstream specialists — other Gastromyzon or Sewellia species, or river loaches — and with small, peaceful fish tolerant of high flow such as White Cloud Mountain minnows. Avoid warm-water tankmates (cichlids, most tetras) and any fish that will compete aggressively for the biofilm surface. A group of three to six G. zebrinus shows more natural behaviour than a solitary individual and gives the keeper a far better chance of seeing the fish active and out in the open.

Conservation

Gastromyzon zebrinus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. It is a Bornean endemic with a distribution apparently restricted to hill-stream habitats in Sarawak, giving it a naturally limited range. Many species in the genus Gastromyzon and the family Balitoridae share this pattern: narrow endemism in specific stream catchments, combined with a habitat that is intrinsically vulnerable to logging, agricultural run-off and sedimentation — the primary land-use pressures on Borneo's streams.

Sedimentation is particularly damaging to rheophilic hillstream loaches: silt smothers the rock surfaces on which their food — biofilm and algae — grows, and reduces dissolved oxygen by filling the interstitial spaces that aerate the hyporheic zone. Clear-felling of riparian forest causes immediate run-off and long-term changes to stream hydrology and temperature. The fish available in the trade are wild-collected; the species is not commercially farmed, and any sustained collection pressure adds to the stressors already operating at the habitat level. Responsible sourcing and a preference for captive-bred specimens where available (rare at present) are appropriate stances.
