Taxonomy & naming
Homatula acuticephala was described by Zhou and He in 1993 and placed in the genus Homatula within the family Nemacheilidae, the true stone loaches — the largest and most species-rich loach family, spread widely across Eurasia. Older Nemacheilidae literature grouped many of these fish under the broad catch-all genera Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus; the modern split into Homatula, Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and others reflects a long-running taxonomic reshuffling of the group, and the Catalog of Fishes remains the authority for the currently valid combination, which is retained here as Homatula acuticephala.
The species' taxonomic standing is genuinely unsettled. Molecular work on Yunnan Homatula has suggested that H. acuticephala may be a synonym of H. anguillioides despite being strongly distinct from H. erhaiensis on external morphology — a reminder that this is a taxonomically complex, still-studied group rather than a fully resolved one. No subspecies or named populations are recognised.
Morphology
As its name suggests — acuticephala, "sharp-headed" — this is a stone loach with a distinctly pointed head, an elongate, sub-cylindrical body typical of Nemacheilidae, and skin that is nearly scaleless over the front of the body, a feature shared across the family and one with real consequences for medication sensitivity. The dorsal fin carries eight branched rays. The caudal fin is patterned with three to four dark bars, a useful field mark against related Homatula from the same drainage.
FishBase records a maximum length of about 4.5 in standard length, making it a modest-sized member of the genus. Like other nemacheilids it likely carries the small, erectile suborbital spine typical of the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, though species-specific detail on this point is not available in the sources at hand.
Habitat
Homatula acuticephala is endemic to the Erhai Lake area of western Yunnan Province in southwestern China, a montane lake-and-stream system on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. Like its Nemacheilidae relatives it is a benthic microhabitat specialist, associated with clear, flowing stream water typical of the genus rather than the open lake itself.
Specific data on temperature range, pH and flow at known sites is not available from the cache used for this article — a genuine gap rather than an oversight, and typical of a species with a single restricted type locality and no recent field surveys. Based on its family, it is presumed to be a benthic micro-predator in the same mould as other stone loaches — foraging over the streambed for small invertebrates, insect larvae and crustaceans rather than grazing algae or biofilm.
This is an inference from the wider Nemacheilidae, not a confirmed observation for this species, and should be treated accordingly; there is no aquarium feeding record to draw on since the species is not established in the trade.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Homatula acuticephala specifically. Phylogenetic and mitogenome studies of Nemacheilidae describe the family broadly as benthic microhabitat specialists but do not report species-level breeding detail for this fish, and no external sexual dimorphism has been recorded.
Given the total absence of field or trade observations — the species has not been reported in recent collections and is essentially unknown outside the ichthyological literature — nothing further can honestly be said about its mating behaviour without guessing.
Breeding
Homatula acuticephala has never been reported bred in captivity, and there is no record of it appearing in the aquarium trade at all. What can be said comes from the general pattern of Nemacheilidae: stone and brook loaches are egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care, and as a family they are rarely bred even when the fish in question is available to hobbyists.
For this species that general pattern is the best available answer, offered as an inference from the family rather than a documented fact: egg-scattering with no parental care, and — given its rarity and restricted range — a species essentially never encountered outside of scientific collection, let alone spawned at home.
In the aquarium
Homatula acuticephala is not a fish of the aquarium hobby. No aquarium care literature, retailer listing or hobbyist account was located for this species; it appears to be unavailable in trade, likely owing to its narrow endemic range and apparent scarcity in recent field surveys. Related Homatula species — H. variegata, H. potanini and H. anguillioides — are occasionally offered and would be a far more practical choice for anyone wanting to keep a fish from this genus.
What little can be inferred from its family and genus suggests it would need the standard stone-loach setup: cool-to-moderate, clear, well-oxygenated, flowing water over a gravel or sand substrate, and a diet of small live or frozen invertebrate foods rather than flake. Given the near-scaleless skin typical of Nemacheilidae, any future captive care would need to follow the general loach caution around copper and full-strength medications. All of this is extrapolation, not documented husbandry, and should be treated as such.
Conservation
Homatula acuticephala is assessed by the IUCN as Vulnerable (VU), most recently as of 17 January 2024. Its conservation concern rests on an extremely restricted distribution confined to the Erhai Lake area and its surrounding drainage in western Yunnan, and on the fact that it has not turned up in recent field collections despite targeted searching at its known type localities — a pattern consistent with genuine decline or extreme rarity rather than simple under-recording.
Broader research on Yunnan Homatula points to habitat loss and water extraction as pressures affecting the genus in this region, plausible contributing factors for a lake-and-stream endemic like this one, though no study in hand documents cause and effect for this species specifically. There is no evidence of aquarium-trade collection pressure — the species is essentially absent from trade — so its conservation story is a habitat one, tied to the health of the Erhai Lake watershed itself.
