Taxonomy & naming
Homatula change was described by Endruweit in 2015 within the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by species count the largest family of true loaches, and one whose genus-level boundaries have been repeatedly reshuffled as older catch-all genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart. The species was later discussed again in a 2022 PLOS ONE paper by Endruweit and colleagues describing further new Homatula species from the same region, which places H. change among a cluster of densely-scaled Homatula distinguished chiefly by fine morphological detail rather than obvious external differences.
The genus Homatula itself is one of several segregates carved from the historical Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus complex and is currently recognised by the Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid fish names, as a distinct genus within Nemacheilidae. No synonymy or subsequent reclassification of H. change is noted in the sources available here, so the combination Homatula change stands as originally described.
Morphology
Homatula change is a small loach, reaching about 4.5 in standard length according to its original description (FishBase separately records 4.5 in SL). It shows the densely-scaled body typical of its Homatula group, along with two diagnostic details singled out in the literature: a shallow V-shaped median notch on the lower jaw, and a short adipose crest running along the dorsal midline of the caudal peduncle.
