Taxonomy & naming
Homatula berezowskii was described by Albert Günther in 1896 and, like much of the old "Nemacheilus" and "Noemacheilus" catch-all taxonomy of Chinese stream loaches, its genus placement has moved more than once as the family Nemacheilidae has been revised. It is currently placed in Homatula, one of several genera carved out of that old lumping (alongside Triplophysa, Schistura and Barbatula) as ichthyologists worked through China's very large and poorly resolved stone-loach fauna. For a period the name was treated as a synonym of the related Homatula variegata; recent molecular work has instead supported recognising H. berezowskii as its own valid, distinct species, phylogenetically close to H. variegata and H. potanini.
