Taxonomy & naming
Homatula cryptoclathrata was formally described by Li, Che and Zhou in 2019 in Zootaxa, as one of three new densely-scaled Homatula species distinguished in the same paper (alongside H. anteridorsalis and H. nigra). The type locality is the upper Salween River (known locally as the Nu-jiang) in Lincang Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China.
It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest and most taxonomically active family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea — genera such as Homatula, Schistura, Triplophysa and Barbatula have all been repeatedly reshuffled as researchers resolve which nominal species belong together. The Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for the valid combination, and at the time of writing that combination is Homatula cryptoclathrata; no synonymy or generic transfer is noted in the sources consulted here.
Morphology
Homatula cryptoclathrata is a small, elongate loach reaching roughly 3.5–4 in standard length in the type series, in line with the modest size typical of Nemacheilidae. It carries the densely-scaled body that groups it with its two co-described relatives, a complete lateral line running the length of the flank, and a short adipose crest along the caudal peduncle.
Its diagnostic feature is its flank pattern: irregular bars along the anterior body that are not evenly spaced, with a few bars extending from the back down through the lateral line but stopping short of reaching the belly — the basis for the species name. As in other true loaches, expect the small, cryptic dorsal-fin spine and near-scaleless skin typical of the group, both of which matter for handling and medication even though this species' full anatomical detail has not been exhaustively described in the sources available.
Habitat
The species is known from mountain streams in the upper Salween (Nu-jiang) drainage of Yunnan, China, where it has been recorded in habitats with both rapid and gentle currents. A related revisional study of the region's densely-scaled Homatula additionally documents this species group using vauclusian springs, underground rivers that connect to surface streams, and even small ditches near villages — a picture of a fish tied closely to clear, spring-fed and stream habitats across a restricted montane range.
As with other members of the genus, which is centred on the eastern slope of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau drainage systems, the water is cool, clear and well-oxygenated mountain-stream water rather than the warm, still, blackwater conditions associated with many lowland tropical fish. No aquarium temperature or pH range has been published for this species specifically; keepers should assume cool-to-moderate flowing water typical of its Yunnan montane streams rather than defaulting to a warm tropical setup.
Feeding
Family-level data for Nemacheilidae describe these fish as benthic micro-predators that feed on small invertebrates and other small organisms picked from the streambed, and there is no reason to expect Homatula cryptoclathrata to differ. Like its relatives it likely takes insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates from among stones and gravel in fast-flowing water.
No species-specific feeding study is available, so this section follows the broader stone-loach pattern: a bottom-foraging micro-predator rather than an algae grazer or omnivorous scavenger. Any aquarium record would be expected to require small live or frozen foods rather than flake, consistent with the family as a whole, though this has not been documented for the species itself.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Homatula cryptoclathrata specifically. At the family level, Nemacheilidae are egg-scattering spawners with no pair-bonding or parental investment — females release a modest number of eggs, on the order of 10–20 per spawning event in studied relatives, into the current rather than depositing them in a nest or cave.
Given how recently this species was described (2019) and that it is known only from its type region in Yunnan, there is no record of captive spawning behaviour to draw on. This is a genuinely data-sparse area for the species, and it would be inaccurate to project more detail onto it than the sources support.
Breeding
Homatula cryptoclathrata is presumed to follow the standard Nemacheilidae pattern: an egg-scatterer over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of the eggs or fry. Spawning in this family often goes unnoticed by keepers even when it occurs, since the eggs are scattered rather than guarded or displayed.
There is no record of this species being bred in captivity, which is unsurprising given its very recent description and the fact that it has not entered the aquarium trade. As with the great majority of stone and brook loaches, the honest statement is that breeding data for this species simply do not exist yet — it should not be assumed to mimic the cave-guarding or mouthbrooding strategies seen in unrelated fish groups.
In the aquarium
Homatula cryptoclathrata has no established aquarium history; it has not been documented in the ornamental trade and this article makes no claim otherwise. Should material ever become available, care should follow the general Nemacheilidae template: cool, clean, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water over a gravel or stone substrate, since the genus is tied to montane stream systems rather than warm, still tropical setups.
As with other true loaches, keepers should assume sensitivity typical of near-scaleless nemacheilids — cautious, reduced-strength medication rather than full-strength treatments, since scaleless skin absorbs many compounds readily. Given the total absence of a husbandry record, any tank recommendation beyond these general family-level cautions would be guesswork, and this article prefers to say less rather than invent detail.
Conservation
Homatula cryptoclathrata has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. A revisional study of the densely-scaled Yunnan Homatula group that includes this species notes conservation concerns tied to habitat degradation and environmental pressures within these fishes' restricted ranges, though no formal Red List category has been assigned to this species individually.
As a stream endemic known only from its type locality in the upper Salween (Nu-jiang) drainage of Lincang, Yunnan, and closely related habitats nearby, it fits the broader pattern seen across many recently-described Homatula and other nemacheilids of the eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau drainages: a narrow-range species vulnerable to local habitat change, for which formal assessment has simply not yet caught up with taxonomy.
