Homatula anguillioides is an eel-bodied stone loach from the cool mountain streams of Yunnan Province in southwestern China, a slim, elongate fish whose species name — anguillioides, "eel-like" — describes it exactly. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest and least famous loach family, and it is the sort of fish that never makes it into a shop: a restricted-range stream endemic known mainly from museum specimens and taxonomic papers rather than the aquarium trade. Almost nothing has been published about how it lives day to day, and that gap is worth stating plainly rather than filling in with guesswork.

Taxonomy & naming

Homatula anguillioides was described by Zhu and Wang in 1985 and placed in the genus Homatula, a group of Nemacheilidae loaches endemic to China. The Catalog of Fishes lists Homatula acuticephala as a junior synonym of this species, meaning the two names have at times been applied to what is now recognized as a single taxon; H. anguillioides is the valid combination.

Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, is the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, and its genera have been repeatedly reshuffled as researchers untangle a very species-rich, morphologically conservative group — many former Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus species have since moved into genera such as Homatula, Schistura, Triplophysa and Barbatula. Homatula itself remains a small, China-focused genus within that larger family.

Morphology

The defining feature is right there in the name: an elongate, eel-like body with a low body depth of roughly 8–10% of standard length, giving the fish a slender, almost serpentine profile compared to the deeper-bodied loaches most aquarists know. Maximum recorded size is modest, around 5.5 in standard length. The dorsal fin carries 7–8 branched rays, and the flanks show a faint, mottled patterning rather than bold banding or striping.

As a member of Nemacheilidae, it shares the family's near-scaleless skin, which in botiid and other loaches is tied to sensitivity to medication and disease — though no aquarium-husbandry data exists for this species specifically to confirm how that plays out in practice. Detailed information on the suborbital spine and other fine anatomical points has not surfaced in the available literature for this species.

Habitat

Homatula anguillioides lives in mountain streams in Yunnan Province, China, with records spanning the upper Salween (Nu Jiang) drainage, the Mekong drainage, and tributaries reaching toward the upper Black River (Red River drainage). Published habitat descriptions for the genus point to clear, pollution-free mountain streams with rapid-to-gentle currents, moderate depths around 12–19.5 in, and rocky or gravelly bottoms carrying a growth of algae — classic cool, well-oxygenated hillstream conditions rather than warm, still water.

No specific temperature range has been published for this species, so a numeric target would be a guess rather than a fact; the honest statement is that it is a cold-to-cool-water stream species from Yunnan's uplands, and any figures beyond that are not documented in the sources available.

Congeners in Homatula are described as omnivorous bottom-feeders, taking algae and detritus alongside small benthic invertebrates, which fits the general micro-predator pattern common across Nemacheilidae — fish that pick insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates off stream substrate, supplementing with plant material and biofilm. No feeding study specific to H. anguillioides has been located, so this picture is inferred from the genus rather than confirmed for the species itself.

Mating

Anything offered here would necessarily be extrapolated from its wild habitat and from Nemacheilidae in general: cool, clear, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water over a rocky or gravel substrate with a natural biofilm to graze, sized to a slender fish reaching roughly 5.5 in. Like other nearly-scaleless loaches, caution around copper-based and full-strength medications would be the prudent default rather than a documented finding for this species.

Given the total absence of trade or care data, the honest position is that this is a fish for taxonomists and stream surveys in Yunnan, not for home aquaria — and any keeper who did encounter it should treat every husbandry parameter as provisional.

Conservation

Homatula anguillioides has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and is classified here as Not Evaluated. It is a restricted-range endemic, known from a limited set of tributary streams in Yunnan spanning the upper Salween/Nu Jiang and Mekong drainages toward the upper Black River — the kind of narrow, single-region distribution that leaves a species inherently vulnerable to habitat degradation even without a formal assessment flagging it.
