Homatula anteridorsalis is a small stone loach described in 2019 from a single mountain-stream system in Yunnan, China, one of three Homatula species newly split from the upper Salween (Nu Jiang) River drainage. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — the largest loach family and one built almost entirely from small, clear-stream, benthic micro-predators rather than the showier botiids sold in shops. Densely scaled, with a complete lateral line and a short adipose crest along the dorsal midline of the caudal peduncle, it forages by day over rock and gravel in fast, oxygenated water. As a recently described, range-restricted stream endemic it is genuinely data-sparse: it has never been assessed for conservation status and there is no record of it in the aquarium trade or of anyone having bred it in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Homatula anteridorsalis was formally described in 2019 by Li, Che and Zhou as one of three new Homatula species erected from the upper Salween (Nu Jiang) River basin in Yunnan Province, China. The type locality is Bingmen Village, Longyang District, Yunnan, within that drainage. It belongs to the genus Homatula, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, the largest and most species-rich family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, whose taxonomy has been repeatedly reshuffled as older catch-all genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus have been split into Homatula, Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and others.

The species epithet distinguishes it from close Homatula relatives described in the same paper by a diagnostic difference in dorsal-fin position and associated anatomy, part of a set of characters — including the shape of the lower jaw and the muscular structure between the pelvic-fin bases — used to separate the three new Salween-basin species from one another and from previously known Homatula. As with much of this genus, the valid combination is a recent one and the species has not accumulated any meaningful synonymy or trade history.

Morphology

Homatula anteridorsalis is a small, elongate, benthic loach reported to reach at least 5 in standard length in the type series, in keeping with the moderate size typical of Homatula. The body carries dense scale cover and a complete lateral line, a short adipose crest runs along the dorsal midline of the caudal peduncle, and the maxillary barbel reaches back to roughly below the middle of the eye. Diagnostic features noted in the original description include a V-shaped median notch on the lower jaw, the absence of paired muscular protrusions between the pelvic-fin bases, and a smaller gill opening set level with the lower edge of the eye — details that separate it from its closest Homatula relatives rather than obvious field marks.

Like most nemacheilids it is a true loach in every sense that matters to a keeper: a bold, bottom-hugging body plan built for holding position in current, with the erectile suborbital spine and near-scaleless-feeling skin that mark the group, both bearing directly on how the fish should be handled and medicated. No colour pattern or sexual dimorphism has been documented for this species; the type description focuses on meristic and structural characters rather than live coloration.

Habitat

The species is known only from the upper Salween (Nu Jiang) River basin in Longyang District, Yunnan Province, southwestern China — a single river system in a mountainous, high-relief part of the eastern Himalayan foothills. The type series was collected from mountain streams showing a mix of rapid and gentle currents, as well as vauclusian springs (pressurized karst spring outflows) and underground river habitats, reflecting the limestone-influenced hydrology common to Homatula's range in this part of Yunnan.

This is cool-to-cold, clear, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated stream water typical of Himalayan-margin nemacheilids — not the warm, still, tannin-stained water associated with lowland Southeast Asian loaches. Nothing in the record suggests the species tolerates brackish or stagnant conditions; it is a strict flowing-freshwater fish tied to a specific mountain-stream and spring system, and its entire known range sits within a single drainage.

Feeding

The type description records Homatula anteridorsalis feeding on algae scraped from rock surfaces, organic residue, and small aquatic insects, placing it as an omnivorous micro-predator and grazer typical of fast-water nemacheilids — part algae-and-biofilm grazer, part opportunistic hunter of small invertebrates picked off the streambed. This dual diet fits the habitat: mountain-stream substrate in well-oxygenated water supports both a biofilm/algae layer and the aquatic insect larvae that stone loaches typically target.

No aquarium feeding record exists for this species, but its wild diet points clearly toward small sinking foods — live or frozen bloodworm, small crustaceans, and grazing on biofilm-covered surfaces — rather than flake, consistent with how most Homatula and other Nemacheilidae are fed when kept.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Homatula anteridorsalis. The original description is a taxonomic paper built on preserved specimens and does not report reproductive biology, and no external sexual dimorphism has been noted. This is consistent with the genus and family generally: most stone and brook loaches are poorly studied in the wild and effectively never observed spawning in captivity, so mating behaviour in Homatula is inferred largely from related nemacheilids rather than from direct observation of this species.

Breeding

Nothing specific is recorded about the breeding of Homatula anteridorsalis, and the honest picture for stone and brook loaches generally is that most species are rarely or never bred in the aquarium. Where Nemacheilidae reproduction has been documented at all, the pattern is egg-scattering over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care — a world away from the cave-guarding or mouthbrooding strategies seen in unrelated fish groups. There is no report of this species, or of Homatula in general, in aquarium culture.

Given its very recent description, single-drainage range and total absence from the trade, data on its reproduction should be considered sparse rather than assumed. Any aquarium attempt would have to work from the general nemacheilid pattern — cool, fast, highly oxygenated water and a gravel substrate — rather than from any species-specific account.

In the aquarium

Homatula anteridorsalis has no known presence in the aquarium hobby; it is a scientifically described, range-restricted stream endemic rather than a trade fish, and this entry should be read as a description of the species rather than a care recommendation drawn from keeper experience. Should it ever appear in the trade, its biology points to the same needs as other cool-water Nemacheilidae: a tank with strong flow and high dissolved oxygen, a mature biofilm on hard surfaces for grazing, a gravel or mixed rock-and-sand substrate, and cool-to-moderate rather than tropical temperatures.

As with other nemacheilids and loaches generally, the near-scaleless skin and erectile suborbital spine mean careful handling and cautious, reduced-strength medication would apply, and loaches of this kind are typically among the first fish in a tank to show signs of ich. Given the total lack of husbandry data, anyone encountering this species should treat every care parameter as provisional and err toward the cooler, cleaner, higher-flow end of loach keeping rather than a standard tropical community setup.

Conservation

Homatula anteridorsalis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. This is unsurprising for a species described only in 2019 from a single river drainage — the upper Salween (Nu Jiang) basin in Yunnan — where detailed population, threat and trend data have not yet been gathered.

Stream endemics restricted to one drainage in a mountainous, karst-influenced landscape are inherently vulnerable to habitat disturbance — damming, water diversion, pollution and land-use change in the catchment — even without a formal assessment confirming it. There is no evidence of this species in the aquarium trade, so trade pressure is not currently a documented concern; the more relevant conservation question is the ecological integrity of its single known river system.
