Homatula coccinocola is a small, little-known stone loach described in 2018 from a single mountain drainage in Yunnan Province, southern China. Like the rest of the family Nemacheilidae, it is a bold, bottom-hugging micro-predator built for cool, clear, fast-flowing water, and like most of its relatives it has never entered the aquarium trade in any documented way. Almost everything published about it comes from the taxonomic literature describing where it was found and how it differs from its close relatives — its husbandry, temperament and breeding behaviour in captivity are simply unrecorded, and this account says so honestly rather than filling the gaps with guesswork.

Taxonomy & naming

Homatula coccinocola was formally described in 2018 by Endruweit, Min & Yang in Zootaxa, one of several new Homatula species split out of the Red River drainage in Yunnan on the strength of morphological and genetic data. The type locality lies in an affluent of the Red River (Yuan Jiang) in Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan, China.

It belongs to the genus Homatula, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea and one that has been repeatedly reshuffled as older catch-all genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart using genetic data. The Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid combination, and it stands as Homatula coccinocola; this account keeps that name rather than second-guessing it. As a species named only in 2018, it has not accumulated synonyms or a history of common names in the hobby literature.

Morphology

The original description characterises Homatula coccinocola by a fully scaled body, a notched lower jaw, 42–44 vertebrae (plus 4 abdominal), 11 pectoral-fin rays and 8 pelvic-fin rays, distinguishing it from closely related congeners in the same Red River radiation. Its ground colour is beige to pale brown crossed by 16–19 brown vertical bars, a banded pattern typical of many small nemacheilid loaches from clear-water Asian streams.

Like other members of the genus, it likely carries the erectile suborbital spine characteristic of the wider Cobitoidea, though the description does not dwell on this feature the way botiid-loach literature does. Adult size is not separately reported for this species; the genus Homatula as a whole spans roughly 2–7 in standard length across its many species, and on general grounds a small Red River tributary endemic like this one is more likely to sit toward the lower end of that range, though this is an inference rather than a measured fact.

Habitat

Homatula coccinocola is known only from its type locality, a tributary of the Red River in Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan — mountain stream habitat typical of the genus, with rapid to gentle currents, clear and pollution-free water, depths around 12–19.5 in, and a substrate of rock, gravel and sand carrying algal growth. Congeneric Homatula species from the same broader region occupy similar upland streams across the Nu-jiang, Lancang-jiang and upper Black River basins, reinforcing the picture of a fish adapted to clean, flowing, rocky mountain water rather than still or degraded habitats.

No water-chemistry data — temperature, pH or hardness — has been published for this species specifically. Given its high-altitude Yunnan mountain-stream setting, it almost certainly lives in cool, well-oxygenated, fast-moving water, consistent with related Homatula and other Yunnan nemacheilids, but this account does not assign precise figures beyond that reasonable inference.

Feeding

No diet study specific to Homatula coccinocola has been published. Based on its body plan and its close relatives within Nemacheilidae, it is best understood as a benthic micro-predator, picking small invertebrates and aquatic insect larvae from among the stones and gravel of its home stream — the standard foraging mode for small stone loaches in fast, clear water.

In captivity, were this species ever kept, that biology points toward small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, daphnia, small crustaceans — taken off the bottom, with sinking foods generally preferred over anything that sits on the surface. No aquarium feeding record exists for this species, so this is a reasoned extrapolation from its family and genus, not a documented account.

Mating

Nothing has been published on courtship or spawning behaviour in Homatula coccinocola. No sexual dimorphism is described in the original account, and no field or captive observations of breeding condition, pairing or spawning migrations exist for this species specifically.

What can be said comes from the wider pattern in Nemacheilidae: stone and brook loaches typically breed as they do the rest of their lives, without elaborate courtship rituals, releasing and fertilising eggs directly over gravel in flowing water rather than forming pairs or defending territory. There is no basis to assume anything more specific for this species, and this account does not invent one.

Breeding

Homatula coccinocola has no recorded aquarium breeding history — it is not established in the hobby at all, let alone bred there. Based on the general pattern for Nemacheilidae, the expected mode is egg-scattering over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry.

This is consistent with stone and brook loaches generally: they are rarely if ever bred intentionally in home aquaria, and most species' reproductive biology is documented only from wild observation, if at all. For this species specifically, the honest summary is that breeding data is sparse to non-existent, and any aquarium spawning would be unrecorded territory.

In the aquarium

Homatula coccinocola is not a fish with an aquarium-keeping history; it has not been reported in the ornamental trade, and no husbandry account exists. Anything said here is inference from its genus and family rather than direct experience with this species, and should be read that way.

If it were ever kept, the mountain-stream biology described in its habitat account points to cool, clean, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water over a rock-and-gravel substrate with algal biofilm — the same setup recommended for hillstream loaches and other cool-water nemacheilids, and a distinctly different setup from the warm, still tanks suited to many tropical aquarium fish. As with other members of Nemacheilidae, it is reasonable to expect a near-scaleless, medication-sensitive fish that would need careful, reduced-dose treatment if disease occurred, though this has not been tested on this species. Given the total absence of trade or husbandry data, this species should be treated as effectively unavailable and unstudied in captivity rather than as a realistic stocking choice.

Conservation

Homatula coccinocola has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List — it is Not Evaluated, and this account records that status rather than guessing at one. As a species described only in 2018 and known from a narrow mountain-stream range in the Red River drainage of Yunnan, it fits the pattern of many recently described Asian stream loaches: genuinely data-sparse, with no population trend or threat assessment yet published.

Related Homatula species described from the same broader Nu-jiang/Lancang-jiang/upper Black River region have been flagged in the literature as vulnerable to water pollution and habitat loss, pressures that plausibly apply to this species' single known locality as well, though no formal assessment confirms this. There is no evidence of any aquarium trade in this species, so collection pressure is not a documented concern; the relevant risks, if any, are habitat-driven and local to its Yunnan stream.
