Taxonomy & naming
Homatula disparizona was described in 2013 by Min, Yang and Chen as the first member of the genus Homatula recorded from the Red River drainage of China, based on specimens from the Panlong River near Xichou County, Wenshan City, Yunnan. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, the largest and most species-rich family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea.
The species has also circulated under the name Schistura disparizona; Nemacheilidae taxonomy has been revised repeatedly as the old broad genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart, with many species redistributed among Schistura, Homatula, Triplophysa, Barbatula and other genera. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the currently valid combination, which places this species in Homatula; that placement is retained here rather than reverting to the older Schistura usage some sources still carry.
Morphology
This is a small loach: the holotype measured 3 in standard length, and FishBase lists a maximum length around 3 in SL, putting it at the modest end of the stone-loach size range. The original description notes a scaleless body, a variable color pattern that runs from a barred pattern anteriorly — with the bars joined along the back — to a striped pattern posteriorly, marked with pale, ovoid blotches along the midlateral line. The caudal fin is emarginate (shallowly forked), the dorsal fin carries 7.5–8.5 branched rays, the lips are thin and smooth, the lower jaw lacks a median notch, and the axillary pelvic lobe is absent or only rudimentary.
As in other nemacheilids, the skin is essentially naked — the scales, where present, are tiny and deeply embedded rather than forming an obvious armor — which matters for how the fish should be handled and medicated. Diagnostic detail beyond the original description is sparse; this species has not been the subject of further published morphological work that we can point to.
Habitat
Homatula disparizona is known from the Red River (Yuan Jiang/Song Hong) drainage in Yunnan, China, specifically streams in the Panlong River system near Xichou County. FishBase describes the habitat as clear-water streams with slow current over a rocky bottom, classifying the species as a tropical freshwater demersal fish.
This places it in the general habitat pattern of stone loaches — clean, well-oxygenated running water over stone and gravel — though the specific current speed recorded (slow rather than fast/torrential) sets it apart from the swiftest hillstream specialists. As a range-restricted stream endemic described only in 2013, its documented distribution is narrow, and data on seasonal habitat use, population size, or additional watersheds is not available in the sources we could verify.
Feeding
FishBase records a low trophic level for this species (around 2.8), consistent with a bottom-feeding micro-predator taking small invertebrates rather than other fish. This matches the general diet pattern seen across Nemacheilidae: insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and other invertebrates picked from the streambed, with closely related Homatula and Schistura species also reported as omnivorous, taking some plant material and detritus.
No aquarium feeding record exists for Homatula disparizona specifically, since the species has no established presence in the trade. Based on its close relatives and its stream micro-predator ecology, it would be expected to take sinking live and frozen foods (bloodworm, Artemia, Daphnia) readily and dried foods less readily — but this is inference from the wider genus rather than a documented fact for this species.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behavior has been documented for Homatula disparizona. The original 2013 description is a taxonomic paper focused on morphology and does not report reproductive biology, and no aquarium spawning record exists to draw on. As with the great majority of stone and brook loaches, this species has essentially no history in the hobby, so there is no observational basis for describing pairing behavior, sexual dimorphism in the field, or spawning triggers.
Breeding
There is no known breeding record for this species, in the wild or in captivity. Based on the general pattern for Nemacheilidae, stone and brook loaches are egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water with no parental care, and the great majority of the family — including small, range-restricted, recently described species like this one — has never been bred in a home aquarium. That is the honest expectation for Homatula disparizona: an egg-scattering species with no parental care, essentially unknown in captive spawning, and with the data simply too sparse to say more.

Homatula disparizona has no established presence in the aquarium trade, and no keeping reports for this species specifically could be verified. What can be said comes from its taxonomy and habitat: it is a small (under 3 in), scaleless stone loach from clear, cool-to-mild streams over rock, and general nemacheilid care principles would apply if it were ever kept — a well-oxygenated tank with a rocky, gravel substrate, moderate flow, and stable, clean water, plus caution with medications given its naked skin and consequent sensitivity to copper-based treatments and full-strength doses.
Because none of this is confirmed for the species itself, prospective keepers should treat any specimen encountered as effectively undocumented in captivity, and default to the conservative, well-oxygenated, rock-and-gravel stream setup used successfully for its better-known Homatula and Schistura relatives.

Homatula disparizona has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; we record it as Not Evaluated rather than guess at a status. Its documented range is narrow — the Panlong River system in the Red River drainage of Yunnan, China — which is typical of the many recently described nemacheilid species that are known from only one or a few streams.
