Homatula guanheensis is a small, freshly described stone loach known only from a single cave-fed stretch of the Guanhe River, a tributary of the Han River (itself part of the Yangtze system) in Xixia County, Henan Province, China. Described in 2021, it belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family — the small, clear-water "stone" or "brook" loaches that spend their lives hugging cool, fast, oxygen-rich stream beds. It has no hobbyist history, no common name, and no conservation assessment; nearly everything published about it comes from the single scientific description, which is the honest state of knowledge for a great many nemacheilids.

Taxonomy & naming

Homatula guanheensis was formally described in 2021 by Zhou, Ma, Wang, Tang, Meng and Nie, in a paper distinguishing it from its closest relatives within the genus Homatula (Nichols, 1925). It sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, within the broader loach superfamily Cobitoidea. The genus Homatula itself has been repeatedly reshuffled as older, catch-all genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart by molecular and morphological work — a pattern common across this family — and it currently comprises upward of 19 valid small benthic species spread across the Yellow, Yangtze, Pearl, Lancang, Nujiang and Red River drainages of China.

The species epithet guanheensis refers to its type locality, the Guanhe River. As a fish described only in the last few years from a single restricted locality, H. guanheensis has not accumulated synonyms or a trade history under an older name; the combination Homatula guanheensis is the current and only valid name, per the original description.

Morphology

The type series — a holotype of 4 in standard length and paratypes ranging 3–4.5 in SL — describes a moderately elongate stone loach, cylindrical toward the head and increasingly compressed toward the tail, in keeping with the general nemacheilid body plan. The flanks carry a bold pattern of 19–22 vertical brown bars, each wider than the pale interspace between it, giving the fish a strongly barred appearance. The predorsal region is only partially scaled, the lateral line runs complete along the body, and an adipose crest is present along the caudal peduncle but does not extend forward onto the body — a detail used to separate it from closely related Homatula species.

Like other nemacheilids, H. guanheensis almost certainly carries the family's characteristic erectile suborbital spine tucked in a groove beneath the eye, and near-scaleless, thin skin typical of the group — though the original description does not detail these points specifically for this species, and no aquarium-husbandry account exists to confirm behaviour around the spine in captivity.

Habitat

The type locality is a stretch of the Guanhe River at 1709–1716 ft elevation in Xixia County, Henan Province — part of the Han River drainage, which is itself a major tributary of the Yangtze. Unusually for a stream loach, the describing authors record the fish from a cave environment scoured by flowing water, occupying rocky microhabitats within fast-moving current. This fits the wider pattern for the genus: related Homatula species occupy clear, rocky, fast-flowing streams across several major Chinese river systems, from the Yangtze basin (H. variegata, H. longidorsalis, H. berezowskii, H. potanini) to a Yellow River tributary (H. laxiclathra).

This is cool-to-moderate, clear, fast, well-oxygenated stream and cave-stream water flowing over rock and gravel — not the warm, still, tannin-stained water associated with many lowland tropical fish. No water-chemistry measurements (temperature, pH) were captured in the available sources, so specific numbers below are inferred cautiously from the genus and habitat type rather than measured directly for this species.

Feeding

No diet has been documented for Homatula guanheensis specifically. Stone and brook loaches of this kind are generally bottom-foraging micro-predators, working over rock and gravel in fast water for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other benthic invert prey — and this is the reasonable expectation for the species' natural diet, consistent with its genus and cave-stream habitat, though it has not been directly observed.

In the absence of any aquarium history, there is no husbandry account of what this species accepts in captivity. Other small nemacheilids in similar fast, clear water generally take small sinking live and frozen foods readily and may ignore flake, but this is inference from the family rather than a documented fact for H. guanheensis.

Mating

Nothing has been published on courtship, sexing or reproductive behaviour in Homatula guanheensis; the original description is a taxonomic account focused on distinguishing morphology, not natural history. Stone and brook loaches in Nemacheilidae are, as a family, egg-scatterers with no mate-guarding or parental behaviour, and there is no reason from the available evidence to expect anything different in this species — but that is an inference from the family, not a documented observation of this fish.

Breeding

As with the rest of Nemacheilidae, the expected breeding mode for Homatula guanheensis is egg-scattering over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward. This is how stone and brook loaches reproduce as a group, and there is nothing in the record to suggest this species departs from that pattern. There is, however, no direct documentation of spawning in this species, in the wild or otherwise — it is a fish known from a handful of museum specimens collected at a single cave-stream locality, not from field or aquarium observation of its reproduction.

It has no known aquarium history and, as far as the available sources show, has never been kept or bred in captivity. For a species this recently described and this narrowly known, the honest statement is that its breeding is unrecorded and, if it is ever attempted, would have to draw on the general nemacheilid pattern rather than any species-specific account.

In the aquarium

Homatula guanheensis is not established in the aquarium hobby. It has no common name, no care sheet on any hobbyist reference site, and no known import history; the only substantive information about it comes from the ichthyological description of its type series. Nothing here should be read as a care guide for a fish that keepers cannot currently obtain.

What can be said, drawing on the genus and family rather than direct observation, is the general shape a nemacheilid stone loach of this kind would need if it were ever kept: cool-to-moderate, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over rock and gravel, matching the swift cave-stream habitat of its type locality, plus the usual scaleless-loach caution around medications and copper-based treatments that applies across the family. None of this is species-specific husbandry guidance — it is a placeholder built from what is known about its relatives, offered because no direct account exists.

Conservation

Homatula guanheensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. Described only in 2021 from a single cave-stream locality in Xixia County, Henan, it is exactly the kind of narrow-range stream endemic that tends to go unassessed for years after description, simply because the data needed for a Red List review — population size, trend, threats — has not yet been gathered.

A species restricted to one known cave-fed river stretch is inherently vulnerable to local pressures such as water abstraction, pollution or habitat alteration in that single system, but no specific threat has been documented for this fish, and no trade — wild-collected or otherwise — is known to exist. The most accurate statement is that its conservation status is simply unknown.
