Taxonomy & naming
Homatula laxiclathra was formally described by Gu & Zhang in 2012 in Environmental Biology of Fishes, based on specimens from the Dayu River, a Yellow River tributary draining the northern Qinling Mountains. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, comprising hundreds of small, mostly Eurasian, fast-water species split across genera such as Homatula, Schistura, Triplophysa and Barbatula following the breakup of the old catch-all genus Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus.
The species epithet is diagnostic rather than decorative: the original description separates H. laxiclathra from close congeners — H. berezowskii, H. longidorsalis and H. variegata — primarily by the width of the vertical brown bars crossing the caudal peduncle, a detail that also explains the name (see Etymology). As with many recently split Homatula species, the genus placement should be treated as current rather than final; Cobitoidea taxonomy is revised frequently as new molecular work resolves relationships among the Qinling and Yellow River endemics.
Morphology
Homatula laxiclathra is a small loach, reaching a maximum standard length of around 5.5 in, with the elongate, cylindrical body plan typical of stone and brook loaches. Like other nemacheilids it carries a small erectile spine below the eye and a covering of tiny, deeply embedded scales that leaves the skin effectively naked — a feature shared across the family and relevant to how the fish should be handled and treated for disease.
The most useful field character is the caudal peduncle patterning: a series of vertical dark bars whose width and spacing distinguish this species from its closest relatives in the Homatula berezowskii species group. Beyond the original description and the mitogenome literature, detailed morphometric and colour data for this species are not well documented in the sources available here, and finer points of its appearance should be treated as data-sparse rather than assumed.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the Yellow River drainage on the northern slope of the Qinling Mountains, Shaanxi Province, central China. The type locality is Xinguansi on the Dayu River, Chang'an County — a cool, clear mountain stream system. Genus-level habitat studies of Homatula describe these fish living in mountain streams with rapid-to-gentle currents, vauclusian (karst) springs, and underground rivers connected to surface streams, all sharing cool, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water.
This is squarely a coldwater-to-cool-temperate stream fish, not a warm lowland species — its range sits in the Qinling range, a well-known biogeographic boundary between northern and southern China, and the genus as a whole includes numerous other narrow-range endemics restricted to single tributary systems in the same mountains.
Feeding
As a stone/brook loach, Homatula laxiclathra is best understood as a benthic micro-predator: it forages over the streambed for small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and other small prey, supplemented by algae and detritus grazed from stones — FishBase lists a trophic level around 2.7, consistent with a mixed invertebrate/detritivore diet rather than a strict carnivore.
No aquarium feeding data specific to this species is available in the cache, but the family pattern is well established: these fish do best on small sinking live or frozen foods (bloodworm, daphnia, chopped invertebrates) plus some vegetable or algae matter, and may largely ignore floating flake given their bottom-oriented, current-adapted foraging style.
Mating
No species-specific courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Homatula laxiclathra in the available sources — this is one of many narrow-range Nemacheilidae for which reproductive biology has simply not been studied in detail. Based on the well-documented pattern across stone and brook loaches, spawning is presumed to follow the family norm: no elaborate courtship, no pair bonding, and no nest or cave construction, with ripe adults releasing eggs directly into flowing water over gravel.

Breeding
Stone and brook loaches of the family Nemacheilidae are egg-scatterers: ripe adults broadcast eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no nest building, guarding or any other form of parental care. Homatula laxiclathra has not been reported bred in captivity, and given its restricted, recently described distribution and the general rarity of home breeding across this family, that is unsurprising rather than exceptional.
The honest picture for this species — as for the great majority of Nemacheilidae — is that it is rarely or never bred in the aquarium; captive populations, where they exist at all, are essentially unknown outside its native Qinling streams.
In the aquarium
Homatula laxiclathra is not an established aquarium fish, and specific care data is not available in the sources here. Extrapolating cautiously from its genus and family, a keeper attempting this species would need to replicate cool-to-moderate, clear, fast-flowing, heavily oxygenated stream water over sand or fine gravel — general Nemacheilidae guidance suggests roughly 64–77 °F and a pH around 6.0–8.0, values consistent with a Qinling Mountains headwater stream rather than a warm, still tropical tank.
As with other scaleless nemacheilids, this fish would be expected to be sensitive to copper and full-strength medications, and prone to catching ich early in an outbreak — care that applies generally across the family should be assumed here too. Given how little is documented about this species, it should be regarded as a fish for specialist or research contexts rather than the general trade.
Conservation
Homatula laxiclathra is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable (VU), evaluated in November 2024 under criterion B1ab(iii), reflecting its restricted distribution — endemic to the Dayu River and nearby Yellow River tributaries draining the northern Qinling Mountains — and an inferred ongoing decline in the extent or quality of its habitat.
As a narrow-range mountain-stream endemic, this species is representative of the broader conservation concern facing many Qinling and Yellow River headwater Homatula species: small ranges make them acutely vulnerable to local habitat degradation, water abstraction and pollution. There is no evidence in the available sources of aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species; its conservation risk, where documented, is habitat-driven.
