Taxonomy & naming
Homatula pycnolepis was described by Hu and Zhang in 2010. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the largest family of loaches and the group that holds most of the small, scaleless-to-densely-scaled "stone" or "brook" loaches of Eurasia's cool running waters. The genus Homatula sits within the broader stone-loach radiation that also includes Schistura, to which molecular work has found it closely related.
A 2022 PLOS One paper describing three new Homatula species placed H. pycnolepis within a distinct, densely-scaled group of the genus, characterised by a pair of muscular protrusions between the bases of the pelvic fins and a V-shaped median notch on the lower jaw — anatomical details used to separate Homatula species from one another and from the superficially similar Schistura. As with much of this genus, the Catalog of Fishes is the reference for the currently valid combination, and no synonymy issue is noted in the available literature; the species is treated here under its original combination, Homatula pycnolepis.
Morphology
Homatula pycnolepis is a small, benthopelagic stone loach with the elongate, subcylindrical body typical of Nemacheilidae. The available literature describes it as brightly coloured relative to many of its drab stream-loach relatives, which has been noted as giving it some potential as an ornamental fish, though it is not established in the aquarium trade. It belongs to the densely-scaled group within Homatula, distinguished from other members of the genus by paired muscular protrusions between the pelvic-fin bases and a V-shaped notch on the lower jaw.
No maximum length has been reported in the sources available for this species; like most Nemacheilidae it is presumed to be a small fish, typically well under 4 in, though this cannot be stated with confidence. As in other true loaches, an erectile suborbital spine and fine, easily damaged scales are expected features of the group, though specific descriptions of these structures in H. pycnolepis were not found in the cache and are not asserted here.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the upper Mekong drainage of southwestern China, recorded from the Lantsang River (the Chinese name for the upper Mekong) and its Yangbi-jiang tributary, with the Nujiang (Salween) drainage also mentioned in the wider literature on the genus. It inhabits clear, pollution-free mountain streams with rocky or gravelly bottoms at modest depths of roughly 12–19.5 in, under currents ranging from rapid to gentle.
It shares these streams with other stone loaches of the genus Schistura, danionins such as Devario, and various small catfishes — a community typical of clear, cool-to-cool-temperate Asian hill streams. This is exactly the kind of running, well-oxygenated water that defines the stone-and-brook-loach niche, and nothing in the source material suggests still or warm blackwater habits for this species.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary data was found for Homatula pycnolepis in the available sources. Based on its family and its stream-bed lifestyle, it can be expected to forage as a benthic micro-predator, picking small invertebrates, insect larvae and other invertebrate prey from among rocks and gravel in fast-flowing water, in the manner typical of Nemacheilidae.
Were it kept in the aquarium, this profile would translate to a preference for small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, small crustaceans and similar sinking fare — over dry flake, though as this species has no established aquarium history, this is a reasonable inference from its family rather than a documented care record.
Mating
No information on courtship, spawning behaviour, or sexual dimorphism in Homatula pycnolepis was found in the sources reviewed. Data is sparse for this narrow-range stream endemic, and nothing here should be assumed beyond what is typical of its family: Nemacheilidae stone loaches are egg-scatterers, without the elaborate pairing or nest-building seen in some other fish groups.
Breeding
As is typical for stone and brook loaches, Homatula pycnolepis can be expected to scatter eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry. This species has no known aquarium breeding history, and given how little is documented about it even in the wild, breeding behaviour here is inferred from the family rather than observed directly in H. pycnolepis. It should be treated as effectively unbred in captivity, and any keeper attempting it would be working from first principles.
In the aquarium
Homatula pycnolepis is not an established aquarium fish, and no dedicated care record for the species was found. Based on its wild habitat — clear, cool, fast, well-oxygenated mountain streams over rock and gravel — a keeper would need to replicate strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen, cooler water than most tropical community setups, and a hard, stony substrate rather than soft sand or a static blackwater layout.
As with other Nemacheilidae, fine or reduced scalation in stone loaches generally goes along with sensitivity to medications and to poor water quality, so any speculative care approach should default to caution with treatments and to pristine, current-driven water. Given the near-total absence of husbandry data, this species is best regarded as a scientific curiosity rather than a fish to source for the home aquarium at present.
Conservation
Homatula pycnolepis has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and is treated here as Not Evaluated. The scientific literature notes that natural populations of this species have declined due to overfishing and dam construction in its native Mekong drainage, and that its restricted range in a handful of clear mountain streams leaves it vulnerable to habitat degradation.
It is not part of the aquarium trade, so ornamental collecting is not a documented pressure; the concerns raised in the literature are river-development and fisheries pressures typical of the upper Mekong basin. Given the lack of a formal assessment, its true conservation status should be treated as an open question rather than assumed to be secure.
