Homatula wenshanensis is a small stone loach described in 2017 from the Red River drainage of Wenshan Prefecture in southeastern Yunnan, China. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family, whose members are the unassuming benthic micro-predators of Asia's cool, fast, clear streams — and like most of its relatives it is known only from its type region and has never entered the aquarium trade. Molecular work places it as the sister species to Homatula disparizona, separated by roughly 5% divergence in the mitochondrial COI gene, and its robust, crested caudal peduncle and complete lateral line mark it as a fairly typical member of the genus. Beyond the original description, almost nothing has been published on this fish — a reminder that most of the world's loach diversity is still just a name and a stream on a map.

Taxonomy & naming

Homatula wenshanensis was formally described in 2017 by Li, Yang, Li & Liu, with the type material collected from the Red River (Yuan Jiang) drainage in Wenshan Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China — the locality the species name commemorates. It sits within Homatula, a genus of small to medium benthic loaches distributed across southern and southwestern China that was itself carved out of the old, over-broad "Nemacheilus" and "Noemacheilus" catch-all genera as the family was revised using both morphology and molecular data.

The genus belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea and one that has been heavily reshuffled in the last two decades as older, undifferentiated genera were split into Homatula, Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula, Oxynoemacheilus and others along modern phylogenetic lines. Genetic work on H. wenshanensis found it to be most closely related to Homatula disparizona, with a COI divergence of about 5.3% supporting its status as a distinct species rather than a population of a known one.

Morphology

Homatula wenshanensis is a small, elongate benthic fish built for holding station on stream bottoms. It has a complete lateral line running the length of the body, a robust trunk, and well-developed dorsal and ventral crests on the caudal peduncle — a feature typical of Homatula and related genera that likely aids stability in current. The lower jaw carries a distinct median notch, and the mouth bears three pairs of short barbels used to feel out food on the substrate, a hallmark of the family. As in other nemacheilids it likely carries the erectile suborbital spine typical of the broader loach superfamily and has the fine, sparse, largely embedded scalation shared by its relatives — traits that make scaleless-type medication sensitivity a reasonable precaution even though it has not been specifically documented for this species.

Detailed measurements from the original description were not accessible for this profile, so precise maximum length cannot be stated with confidence. Congeners in Homatula are generally modest in size — related species such as H. guanheensis are known from specimens in roughly the 3–4.5 in standard length range — which gives a plausible sense of scale for this genus, though it should not be read as a confirmed figure for H. wenshanensis specifically. This is a data-sparse species, and that gap is worth stating plainly rather than guessing at a number.

Habitat

The species is known from the Red River (Yuan Jiang) drainage in Wenshan Prefecture, southeastern Yunnan, China — a mountainous region where streams run cool to mild, clear and fast over rock and gravel substrates. Typical Homatula habitat, and the pattern seen in well-documented congeners, is fast-flowing, well-oxygenated rocky stream water at moderate elevation, sometimes including cave-adjacent or spring-fed reaches; there is no indication this species departs from that pattern.

As with most Nemacheilidae, this is emphatically not a warm, still, blackwater fish. It is a current-loving stream species from a single documented drainage, and its narrow known range is itself a conservation-relevant fact: a species described from one river system is inherently vulnerable to anything that degrades that one system, whether the population turns out to be broadly distributed within the drainage or genuinely restricted.

Feeding

No diet-specific data has been published for Homatula wenshanensis. Based on its barbel-rich, bottom-oriented mouth and the well-documented ecology of its genus and family, it is reasonable to describe it as a benthic micro-predator: a fish that forages over gravel and rock for small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and similar prey — using its barbels to locate food by touch in fast, clear water rather than relying on sight in murky conditions.

In the near-total absence of an aquarium history for this species, any feeding guidance is necessarily extrapolated from its relatives rather than drawn from direct observation. Small live and frozen foods and sinking preparations would be the expected match for this kind of fish; it is not a species with any documented herbivorous or scavenging specialisation.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Homatula wenshanensis, and no external sexual dimorphism was noted in the sources reviewed for this profile. This is unsurprising: the species is known essentially from its original 2017 description and a handful of taxonomic and molecular follow-up references, with no aquarium-hobby literature to draw on.

What can be said comes from the wider pattern in Nemacheilidae: stone and brook loaches in this family are typically egg-scatterers that spawn over gravel or among stones in flowing water, without courtship displays or pair formation of the kind seen in many other freshwater fish groups. There is no basis to assume anything more specific for this species.

Breeding

There is no record of Homatula wenshanensis being bred in the aquarium — unsurprising for a species that, as far as available sources show, has never been part of the aquarium trade at all. Following the pattern documented for Nemacheilidae generally, the expected mode is an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward.

Honesty is the right approach here: this is a data-sparse, recently described stream endemic with essentially no breeding literature, aquarium or otherwise. Any keeper attempting to reproduce it would be working from first principles drawn from better-known relatives, not from documented experience with the species itself.

In the aquarium

Homatula wenshanensis has no known aquarium history and does not appear to be established in the hobby. This profile exists for reference and completeness rather than as a care guide, and speculative care advice would do a disservice to a fish this poorly documented.

If it were ever to be kept, everything known about its genus and family points toward the same requirements as other stone and brook loaches: cool-to-mild, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over a rocky or gravel substrate, and — given the near-scaleless skin typical of the family — cautious, reduced-strength medication if treatment is ever needed. A species known from a single Chinese drainage and never seen in trade should, at minimum, prompt caution about collecting pressure on wild populations rather than any expectation it will show up as a farmed or commercially bred fish.

Conservation

Homatula wenshanensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. Described only in 2017 from the Red River drainage in Wenshan Prefecture, Yunnan, it is a recently recognised, apparently range-restricted stream endemic of exactly the kind that tends to be overlooked by conservation assessment even as its habitat faces pressure.

Southeastern Yunnan's streams sit within a region affected by damming, water diversion, agricultural runoff and other habitat pressures common across China's freshwater systems. Without a formal assessment or population monitoring, the conservation status of this species is simply unknown; its restriction to a single documented drainage is itself a reason for caution until more data exists.
